Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

AMAZING NEWS on af @TheDaydreamBelievers !! So happy for you. Hopefully better cycles starting now!

And I'm really sorry for the BFNs @Juno231 and @mintgreenlife 😢 Everything crossed for next month.

My chart is really all over the place, I've no idea what to make of it 🙈 The app does now at least think I ovulated CD21 (rather than CD19 like I assumed due to LH). Hoping for a long luteal but we'll see. Hopefully clearer picture next month!

@MintGreenLife I've attached my chart too to show how clear AF's arrival was for me 😅. I knew it was coming yday before it had actually got here. So CD2 today.

@crabette I'm sorry but I really struggle with your type of chart, it's so hard to decipher for me 🙊

@Juno231 Yours is so clear!! I don't know why my temps are so up and down 😩🙈

MintGreenLife · 09/08/2020 10:46

@Juno231 I didn't even get any warning! My temp seemed to stay up right until it crashed down this morn. Only clue I had was sore boobs which I didn't notice until an hour or two before I went to bed last night. To be honest I'm feeling pretty happy I had a normal luteal phase, one less thing for me to worry about! x

Hi,
Saw this thread and thought it would be useful to share my experience, I was on the pill for almost 17 years with never more than a couple of months off in all that time. We decide to start TTC in October and I came off the pill as soon as my pack finished.

The first two cycles were hard for me as they lasted 37 and 38 days with no signs of ovulation. I was using cheap OPK’s at this point and looking out for other signs like EWCM. I also had some reflexology in this time and got told I had crystals around my ovaries which were blocking my energy flow- this didn’t help my anxiety!

On the 3rd, 4th and 5th cycles I settled down to between 30-31 day cycles and started getting smiley faces on clear blue tests. I also had an Ava bracelet which showed a temperature rise.
Month 6 I had a 39 day cycle with no ovulation and became utterly fed up. Month 7 I drunk loads of wine and didn’t track at all. Month 8 I got my BFPsmile - I did a clear blue Digital on CD14 and got a smiley face so it appears I finally settled down into a 28 day cycle!

So I guess this is my long winded way of saying it took my body 8 months to settle down after being on the pill for so long. Whilst 8 months isn’t that long I found it horrendous at times and there were lots of tears thinking my body was broken etc.

My main tip would be don’t bother taking pregnacare as I stopped taking it the month I got pregnant so I do wonder if there’s a link.

MintGreenLife · 09/08/2020 13:49

@YorkshireGirl35 thanks for sharing your experience ☺️ So far my cycles have been 30 days, 37 and 53!! From what I can tell I've ovulated late every cycle, I think around CD25 first cycle, CD33 second cycle and CD40ish third, but my first two cycles my luteal phase was only a few days, whereas this last cycle it was 12 days, so I'm praying it'll be a bit more normal over the next few cycles. I'm praying it is as our 'cut off' for our postponed wedding next year is end of October, and realistically I should get 2-3 more shots at TTC, but then in the five months since coming off the pill I've only had three cycles.

I'm taking a prenatal multi Vit but it's an expensive 100% natural one that's reccomended in 'it starts with the egg' - there's actually a couple of things in Pregnacare that the book reccomends against taking.

Huge congrats on your BFP! How far along are you? X

@MintGreenLife no problem Smile
I know how useful I found these thread when I was having some of my meltdowns about TTC
Wow 53 days must have felt a really long time, you just want your body to have a period and get on with it sometimes so you can start afresh.
Finger crossed you for the next couple of cycles for you!
That prenatal sounds fine then, I should have research pregnacare more really. I did start taking oil of evening primrose for two weeks a month recently as I never got much EWCM before and I think that helped.
Thanks! I’m only 7 weeks so it’s still very early but I saw the heartbeat on an early scan this week so I’m trying to be hopeful Smile

eternalflame2020 · 09/08/2020 16:10

@mintgreenlife do you mind me asking which what the prenatal you are taking is called? Your chart is exactly the same as mine in terms of dropping and then af arriving same day!

@yorkshiregirl35 thanks for sharing, it's so good to hear positive outcomes!

My temp stayed down low again today. I'm feeling a bit negative as this time last month I had lots of signs that ovulation was coming and today is CD16 and I don't have any symptoms.

Pettylamby · 09/08/2020 16:14

Hi all!

This is definitely the thread for me.

Came off microgynon in May, expected my period to arrive as when I used to have them they were very regular! It is still nowhere to be seen... This is CD 90 something now!

I did have a 4 day light bleed when I came off but I know this isn't classed as a period!

I had signs of ovulation about two weeks ago(EWCM, stomach cramps and felt hot) but so far nothing since then! I'm hoping ovulation is a good sign and my period shouldn't be far behind but just looking for some reassurance that this has happened to ladies before! Also took a test and got bfn so that's not the reason behind it!

Should probs add I'm in my early 30s, very fit and active so no issues there!

MintGreenLife · 09/08/2020 17:00

@Pettylamby hi and welcome 😊 Sorry to hear about your 90 day cycle! I honestly thought I was on to a winner after I came off the pill as my first cycle as 30 days, but then this last cycle has been 53 days! I've also learnt that the reason why my cycle was a normal length the first two times was because I had a 4/5 day luteal phase, so obviously that's no good.

I honestly think that your health etc seems to count for nothing. My BMI is 21.5 so bang in the middle of 'normal' I eat loads of fruit and veg and exercise regularly. I really thought all this would have helped my case post-pill but I really do think it's pot luck. Also think how long you've been on the pill can play a role, but again this doesn't always seem to add up in terms of how your body reacts to coming off.

Sounds so silly, but today is CD1 for me of my fourth cycle off the pill and I am thrilled that I have cramps and a proper flow! My last two periods were very light, so I'm hoping this means I'm back on track. Have you spoken to the GP at all about your lack of AF? X

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 09/08/2020 17:01

@pettylamby glad you found us!

Im 31, was on microgynon/rigevidon for 12 years, came off in March and it took 141 days to have my first period (3 days ago, never thought id be so glad to see it)! My body made an attempt at ovulation like 3 times but I never hit a peak on OPKs etc.

It was very stressful to be in limbo, so believe me, I know how you feel. They never really warned us of this, eh? Just hoping it normalises now.

I found my GP willing to look into bloods etc at CD90 + if you'd want that.

MintGreenLife · 09/08/2020 17:01

@eternalflame2020 of course, I'll send you the link to them on Amazon as soon as I'm home x

@YorkshireGirl35 will be keeping everything crossed for you ☺️

I'm actually feeling really positive today as am having my first proper full flow AF since stopping the pill, what a thing to be excited by 🙈 Have cramps and everything ha. Makes sense though as my last two cycles my lining only had a few days to build up after ovulation before AF arrived.

I've been having loads of EWCM so am hoping that's a good sign too! In fact this last cycle I had around 10 days of it 🙈 Which I know in theory isn't great as means my body is trying to ovulate for a long time before managing, which also makes sense with CD40ish for ovulation, but at least I'm getting lots rather than none at all x

OP posts:
Pettylamby · 09/08/2020 19:07

@MintGreenLife - I know I never thought I'd be wishing to get a period so much!! I am trying to be chilled about the whole thing as there isn't really a lot I can do but even that's not easy! Every little cramp and feeling I'm like oh is that it?? You Must be delighted to have yours!

I haven't spoken to the GP as I was hoping just to let it resolve on its own - I'm gonna give it till September then I'll maybe look into that!

@TheDaydreamBelievers - 141 days is crazy! I thought 90 was a lot!! 🙈 Patience is not my finest feature either but there's not a lot I can do (which is the most annoying part) so I'll just have to keep counting the days and see what happens! 🙏🏻

@Pettylamby that sounds fair enough, really hope AF comes for you soon and then you won't have the faff of having to have tests etc. Totally TMI but I think this is the first time I've 'filled' a regular tampon in probably almost 10 years! I found in the pill my periods got lighter and lighter as the years went on until they didn't even warrant me using tampons, but I carried on anyway. Am relieved as there's another thread on here where lots of women found they had light periods for a long time after the pill, as it can thin your uterine lining which can make implantation tricky, so am glad to be having a pretty good flow! Not sure if I'd describe it as heavy, but it's certainly enough so that I need to use regular tampons and change it every 3-4 hours. So funny the things you find exciting post pill!

@MintGreenLife @YorkshireGirl35 just saw your posts about Pregnacare and I'm currently taking it. On month 8 of TTC now but was told that it would help with my PMS as I have absolutely horrendous mood swings. Would you recommend taking something else instead?

YorkshireGirl35 · 10/08/2020 13:04

@ShellMc2237 personally I wouldn’t take it. There are quite a lot of reviews on amazon and some previous threads on here where women think it extended their cycles.
I’m going to be biased because I got pregnant when I stopped it though.
I took folic acid with vitamin D, Cod Liver Oil and oil of evening primrose instead.

Juno231 · 10/08/2020 14:35

@MintGreenLife that's so good that your AF is getting more proper! I think I'm on CD1 today as I finally had a temp drop below the cover line. I started bleeding on Sat but then it stopped and I had nothing o Sunday - this happened to me last cycle as well which has been confusing.

With it starting today it means I had a 31 day cycle I think - the longest one I've had since I came off the pill in Oct! Still a light period and no cramps 🤷‍♀️.

Welcome to all the new ladies btw and @YorkshireGirl35 I hope you're right as this will be cycle 8 for me now.

MintGreenLife · 10/08/2020 14:57

@Juno231 this is definite proper AF now! Got cramps, backache and what I would call a heavy flow. Can you remember what AF was like before you started the pill? As I used to have heavy periods before, so maybe lighter periods are just normal for you?

@ShellMc2237 I've included the link to the prenatal I take a few messages above ☺️ X

ShellMc2237 · 10/08/2020 15:08

@MintGreenLife Thanks! Just looked though and it has Vit A on the ingredients list which worries me a bit. I work in a lab and we test a lot of Vit A and it's harmful to the unborn child so not sure I will switch to that, I know the Pregnacare ones don't have any in

MintGreenLife · 10/08/2020 15:18

@ShellMc2237 the only form of Vit A that is harmful is retanol I believe. I think Pregnacare does contain Vit A bit it's not listed under that, it's the natural form which can be taken in pregnancy, might be something like beta caratone or something. I was very careful to ensure I wasn't taking anything with the form of Vit A you can't take in pregnancy

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 10/08/2020 15:19

@ShellMc2237 just checked and it is beta caratone which is a form of Vit A and that is in Pregnacare

OP posts:
ShellMc2237 · 10/08/2020 15:47

You are right, I did post straight after that I realised it was ok but don't know what's happened to it

phew literally get terrified of anything to do with harmful things, don't think it helps that I'm at work all day with them absolutely terrified if I get pregnant my baby will have some sort of a deformity
