Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

Hmm, from what I've read @mintgreenlife you're not out yet! Like you said, see what your temps are doing this morning and test with fmu. Have you been having any other symptoms last couple of days?

MintGreenLife · 06/08/2020 08:37

@eternalflame2020 I feel like a BFN at 14DPO is pretty conclusive. I went for a pee in the night around 5am, so am trying to best to leave it as long as poss before I do a test this morn.

No other symptoms no. Don't even feel like AF is going to come. Only thing is yesterday my boobs felt a bit tender and heavy, but that could go either way. Temp was still high this morn at 37.7, but lower than yesterday. Surely AF will come today 🤔 Am 15DPO now! X

Juno231 · 06/08/2020 09:03

@MintGreenLife I'm sorry for the BFN, I'd agree it's pretty conclusive at 14dpo. I tested this morning as well and that was the starkest of whites. On to cycle 8 I guess!

Hopeful87 · 06/08/2020 09:16

It's not unusual for AF to come at 16 DPO but it must be strange to have such a long luteal phase after such a short one before!

I have heard of some women who didn't get a conclusive BFP until up to 5 weeks along, so although unusual it can still happen.

The waiting and not knowing must be frustrating though, particularly as you are not 100% sure what has happened this cycle. I'm currently on CD 26 and no sign of ovulation yet...

MintGreenLife · 06/08/2020 11:59

@Juno231 thanks :) just hope AF comes soon, otherwise seems a bit strange! Makes me wonder if I perhaps ovulated later, but I updated those two temps on my chart that I took later, and even though one is under the coverline, FF still agrees on the original ovulation day. Only thing that makes me wonder is the fact I carried on getting EWCM for a few days after predicted ovulation day.

Thanks @Hopeful87 maybe you're right, maybe I'll just have a lengthy luteal phase. Really hoping AF comes today so that I know that's going on. is making me question whether I ovulated at all, despite the clear temp rise! Fingers crossed you don't have to wait too much longer, it's been the same for me, waiting weeks on end for ovulation! x

@Juno231 sorry about your BFN too. I tested again this morn and same as you, stark white!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 06/08/2020 12:35

Don't want to get too excited but I think my period is starting!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 06/08/2020 13:15

Also @MintGreenLife @Juno231 I'm sorry about the BFN. Hoping we can all be a good support for each other into this next month

Flowerkm · 06/08/2020 13:19

@MintGreenLife @Juno231 Hope your AF arrives soon and you can start on your next cycle. Sorry to hear its a BFN this month. Such a waiting game on when you're going to come on.

@TheDaydreamBelievers thats good you think AF is coming! I hope it does arrive today ☺️

Im on CD8 now so may start testing soon for ovulation as I seemed to have peaked quite early but not felt a single twinge yet whereas last month i was getting cramps but maybe that was just where I had recently stopped the pill, whereas now its been a few more weeks xx

MintGreenLife · 06/08/2020 13:59

@TheDaydreamBelievers that's great news! Really hope it continues, have you just had some spotting so far? I want mine to arrive now too! Never thought I would be willing AF to come, really feel like it should have been here by now. Fingers crossed yours continues!

@Flowerkm that sounds like a good plan. In my first cycle off the pill I got all sorts of twinges etc, but nothing since x

Proper red blood now @MintGreenLife! Definite period times!

Yesss!! So happy for you @TheDaydreamBelievers you must be so relieved!

Elsie2021 · 06/08/2020 21:01

@TheDaydreamBelievers I’m so happy for you!!! Bet you’ve never enjoyed a period so much 😂

MintGreenLife · 06/08/2020 21:18

@Juno231 would you mind looking at my chart again quickly? I posted it on a new thread early to see what others thought as feeling frustrated that AF hasn't arrived yet, and everyone seems to be saying they think I ovulated on CD41, what do you think? That would explain why I continued to have EWCM for a few days after when I thought I ovulated, but then there's nothing to explain those high temps before CD41...and they are really quite high! Is frustrating if I did ovulate later, as we stopped DTD. In fact the only day we DTD after I thought I ovulated was CD41! X

I’ve been very lucky. Came off the mini pill in June. One period and I’m now 5 weeks pregnant.

Prior to this I came off the regular pill after about 10 years on it in February 2018, fell pregnant in April, had an early miscarriage and was pregnant again the next cycle. He’s now 18 months old.

I’m 38.

Pip1903 · 07/08/2020 11:44

Hi ladies, hope your all well and happy things seem more positive for u all. Sorry I'm unsure how to tag names, just an update ...think I'm finally having af on day 54! Although it's only slighty more than spotting more brown and pink (sorry tmi) this is my 3rd day I'm having all the right period pains. Would you say this is af? I believe I ovulated around the 22nd july (day 40) Does af confirm ovulation?
Any help is appreciated ..wishing u all well x

lawandgin · 07/08/2020 19:09

@Pip1903 Hello and welcome to the thread!

To answer your questions, AF doesn't always mean ovulation, it is possible to have annovulatory cycles. After my last pack of pills, I had my normal breakthrough bleed but my cycle was 60 days! About 10 days before AF finally came, I had the spotting that you described, as well as lower back ache. There was no mistaking AF when it did come though. I'm now on day 7 of my next cycle and using OPK to try and identify LH surge. The only way to confirm ovulation is by BBT testing- although this isn't practical for me due to getting up at different times each day. I know I am going to have to have IVF so tbh it doesn't make much difference to me anyway 😂 fingers crossed AF comes for you soon!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 08/08/2020 00:53

@Pip1903 - I've finally started a period at cd 141 - definitely 100% period: blood, clots and all. I also had a few days of pink and brown spotting on CD 60-odd but it never came to anything.

eternalflame2020 · 08/08/2020 10:10

Morning! What's everyone's plans for another swelter today?

@mintgreenlife how are your temps today? I have had a big dip today, CD15 from 36.4 to 36.0 so I'm hoping that means I am going to ovulate in next 24 hours.

@pip1903 that definitely sounds like af to me!

Flowerkm · 08/08/2020 11:02

@eternalflame2020 hey ☺️ plans are to stay as cool as possible today! OH is doing our garden and doing shed bases so Im staying out of his way! Was meant to paint the fence today but sunbathing is much more needed! What are you up to?

Not much of an update for me - CD10 and app predicts ovulation in 2 days but not a hint of a line on my strips so we will see. I did get a LH surge early last month on CD13 so expecting it around then or even a little later :)

Hope everyones ok xx

Pip1903 · 08/08/2020 11:08

Thanks for reply ladies @lawandgin thanks for advice I seem to have stopped now, I was only going by my natural body symptoms for ovulation the ewcm, cramps and sore boobs ...I did try some opks but with my hectic lifestyle could never test at regular times was also trying not to obsess too much as only stopped my pill 10th june. Think I'll give them a try again. Wishing u well on your journey with ivf x
@TheDaydreamBelievers so happy for you bet your so relieved to finally see af the wait is so frustrating.
I look like I might be seeing the same pattern as I only had a light flow for 3 days so I'm not to sure now if it was af ..will keep tracking and see how it goes.
@eternalflame2020 I'm unsure now as only lasted 3 days. Thanks for reply x

MintGreenLife · 08/08/2020 23:19

@eternalflame2020 fingers crossed your temp goes up tomorrow 🤞🏼Mine is still high! Was 36.70 this morn, so slightly lower, but my coverline is at 36.3. If I'm going on what I thought was my original O day that would make me 17 DPO, so unlikely that was my O day I think. If I'm going on my later possible O day then I would be 12DPO now I think. My boobs are really sore on the sides today, hoping AF comes in the next few days (or I get a BFP, but unlikely) as then at least I should be confident in the second O date x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 09/08/2020 08:10

@MintGreenLife ooh does that mean you'll test again? CD41 def looks like the day, esp with ewcm continuing past the previous suspected O-date.

AF got me yesterday so I'm on cycle 8 now 🤷‍♀️

MintGreenLife · 09/08/2020 09:05

@Juno231 you're not alone! AF finally got me today too after a 53 day cycle! My temp went right down this morn, so guess I won't need to keep looking for signs in the future that AF is coming as that's a clear sign there 😂 If I did ovulate at the later date then I had a 12 day luteal phase so am happy with that. I actually felt quite pleased to finally see AF this morn and am hoping it'll be heavier than last time. Also praying now I've had a normal luteal phase my cycles might be back on track and that I ovulate around a normal time rather than CD40ish 🙈

Sorry to hear about AF! When did she arrive? At least if I do have a more normal cycle we will be testing together again ☺️ X
