Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

Morning - my temp is still low today so just going to ignore that opk for now! I have only had one full cycle of temping @mintgreenlife but my temp dropped below the cover line and by the afternoon my period had come.

MintGreenLife · 04/08/2020 08:59

@eternalflame2020 I think I had about three false starts with OPKs the first cycle I tracked. That's why temping is so good to back it up, as you know to keep DTD ☺️ Ahh ok thanks, maybe mine is just doing a show decline. Expecting AF tomorrow or Thursday x

@MintGreenLife I've seen all sorts! Some charts have a slow drop, others have a sudden drop the day of AF. This is only my second cycle charting and mine was still high on CD1.

Mine has gone up again today and my resting heart rate has really dropped. Not sure what's going on. Had two cups of tea this morning made by OH that I unexplainably found disgusting so now I've got it in my head that it might be me and not the tea. Need to quell that as I'm bound to get a BFN and just gotten my hopes up over nothing!

MintGreenLife · 04/08/2020 10:04

Thanks @Juno231 I guess I'll have to stop looking at every tiny sign to try and work out if AF is going to come and just wait patiently... don't really feel like it's going to come any time soon though, although surely should be here in the next few days.

Ohh interesting! I don't know much about resting heart rate to be honest. Could the tea have tasted funny because you usually make your own? It's so difficult isn't it not to read into every tiny little thing. I thought I was getting a bubbling feeling and some twinges in my lower tummy the last few days, and last two nights I noticed I can see my pulse in my lower tummy too which I thought was weird, but then I've never looked for it before...it might always be like that! I did feel quite disappointed at the BFN yesterday as did think I had a few signs, but I did the exact same thing to myself last cycle, even though I hadn't even clearly ovulated!! x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 04/08/2020 10:18

@MintGreenLife no we make the tea pretty 50/50 - I just found it tasted weird somehow, like the water must have had lots of limescale or the milk was about to go off or something. A bit alkaline I guess? OH thought it was an exceptional cup of tea!

Also forgot to say that I use the femometer OPKs and find them very reliable so far! Think I've been using them since February maybe.

MintGreenLife · 04/08/2020 10:22

@Juno231 hmm well you never know! Haha love that he thought it was 'exceptional'. Did you say you're testing on Thursday?

Brilliant thanks, think I will give those a try, as having a 'medium' line every day drives me crazy. I'd rather use less sensitive ones and have no line or a very faint line and then an obviously darker line I think! x

Hey all! Hope everyone is well. I'm still wandering about period-less (CD140, sheesh). Temp came down and is on its way back up so who knows what's occurring. I have a GP consult by phone today, largely to prod them a bit!

Apart from that, just counting down the days to my holiday!

MintGreenLife · 04/08/2020 12:16

@TheDaydreamBelievers lovely to hear from you :) so sorry your temps didn't stay up! I wonder if it's worth asking the GP why they are a bit haywire? To be honest I think GPs know less than we do about charting BBT and these sorts of things, so may not be helpful.

Let us know how the call goes, hope they might be able to offer some helpful advice or the next steps to help you! How long have you got until you go away? x

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/08/2020 14:40

Well that was helpful... not. GP couldn't call today and next telephone appts are after our holiday, but I cant book one cause it's too far in advance. They have referred to gynaecology, gave me gynaecology's number but they said they cannot give an estimate of when they will see me as my referral is routine but they do have a "huge" backlog... great! I guess in the meantime I just wait and see?!

Juno231 · 04/08/2020 14:45

@TheDaydreamBelievers FWIW saying that you're spotting always accelerates when they'll see you as it's a sign of cancer and they need to cover their butts. Not something I'd have the guts to you but my best friend's gyno told her to say that if she ever needed to be seen by her urgently.

Elsie2021 · 04/08/2020 15:47

@TheDaydreamBelievers sorry to hear you’re having to wait so long for AF. If it’s any consolation, I did come off the pill around 5 years ago for a break and it took 8 months to get a period! I wasn’t counting then, I didn’t actually care because I wasn’t TTC but I guess it would have been CD240+.

This time it only took 2 months so I don’t know the reason it took so long that time, but my point is that I’m sure it will come eventually. Sometimes these things just take time (which isn’t what you want when you want a baby!).

I do know there is meant to be medication that brings on ovulation, isn’t there? Until you hear from the hospital I would just say try not to let it consume you. Self love and care, keep DTD and eventually it will happen.

I got AF yesterday so if I did ovulate when I thought then I thinks that’s 11dpo, would that be a long enough time?

I started temping today. I think I fell asleep with the thermometer in my mouth and it moved so not sure if I got the right temperature! But I’m just getting in the swing of it, I’ll try and remember to keep awake tomorrow!

Juno231 · 04/08/2020 16:22

@Elsie2021 when that happens to me I just take the temp again straight after, I don't think it makes much difference tbh if you've just been lying still. As for 11 days for an LP - that's all good! I think you're only meant to worry if it drops into single digits.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/08/2020 16:47

Hey @Elsie2021- that is really reassuring thank you. I do agree I need to just try to relax and take care of myself. I think I just feel like I'm starting a bit old and time is flying on a bit.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/08/2020 16:48

Ps - @Elsie2021- 11dpo AF is perfect!

Flowerkm · 04/08/2020 21:09

@Elsie2021 hey, just thought Id jump in there and let you know my LP was also 11 days and i was happy with that so I think you're all good ☺️ I ovulated on CD13 and had a 24 day cycle. Finished my AF yesterday so will see what this months brings x

MintGreenLife · 05/08/2020 08:32

I'm not really sure what's going on with my BBT! I'm 14DPO now and I expected it to carry on going down, but it's gone back up again 🤔

Sorry to hear the GP wasn't helpful @TheDaydreamBelievers I really hope you get some answers when you see gynaecology x

@MintGreenLife maybe time to test again? I did an IC today at 10dpo and it was stark white. Temp has remained high today and FF is now signalling that I might have a triphasic chart which is good - however my RHR has dropped again today which usually signals the arrival of AF!

Doesn't bode well lol.

MintGreenLife · 05/08/2020 09:09

@Juno231 Hmm, maybe I'll leave it until tomorrow and see what's going on. Just recapping what you said in your last message about BBT and AF and that yours stayed high on CD1, so maybe I'll wait and see if AF arrives today and if not see if my temp is still high tomorrow. I'm out of FRERs now but have some other tests. Only thing I wondering is if I possibly could have ovulated slightly later as I carried on having EWCM a few days after O, but then there's such a clear shift (minus two dips) where FF has pinpointed, and my other two apps agree on that date too.

Well your chart is positive, so I certainly wouldn't class yourself as out yet! Will you test again tomorrow? x

Sorry to hear you had a crap time with the GP @TheDaydreamBelievers 😢 Sounds less than useless!

I've got no idea what's happening with me now. Had a temp drop Saturday; then positive LH on Sunday; felt like things were happening on Monday (CD19) - a short pain on right side, a little crampy? So was feeling pretty delighted that I thought I'd ovulated!! But no temp rise yet so I'm in a strop 😂

I've read it can take up to 3 days.... but usually happens the day after 🤷🏻‍♀️ So now I think maybe I haven't ovulated, but my LH's are back to strong negatives. App still saying suspected ovulation CD19 but waiting on temp confirmation.

MintGreenLife · 05/08/2020 09:11

@crabette you never know, like you say your BBT might just take a few days to rise :) see how the next few days go x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 05/08/2020 09:20

@crabette It might be the dip on CD20? I've read ovulation pains don't have to be the day of ovulation itself and you do have a little dip on that day! Fingers crossed for you.

@MintGreenLife yes I'll do a final test tomorrow just to make sure I'm okay to drink at the weekend.

MintGreenLife · 05/08/2020 09:23

@Juno231 I've just ordered some FRERs on Amazon that will be here later today, so if AF doesn't come today and my BBT is still high tomorrow I'll test first thing tomorrow too x

OP posts:
eternalflame2020 · 05/08/2020 15:39

@crabette I had an lh surge on cd15 last cycle but didn't have a temp rise until cd18 so ovulate on cd17. I wasn't sure if I had taken the opks rights as I started them a bit late on cd12 and got a flashing smiley on cd13 and then the solid smiley on cd15. Anyway it's way too expensive to use them every month so just relying on temping now and dtd every other day from cd10. Fingers crossed for your temp rise tomorrow.

@mintgreenlife fingers crossed for you too that your temp stays up and you get that bfp!

MintGreenLife · 05/08/2020 15:46

@eternalflame2020 thanks :) I had a BFN 9DPO and 12DPO, so expecting AF to arrive really, but we shall see x

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 05/08/2020 21:07

My Femometer LH strips and HGC strips came this eve so I just did a pregnancy test quickly and still BFN 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'll try again with FMU but if that's negative surely that's me out now. Am 14DPO today, I guess perhaps I just have a luteal phase that's on the long side? Which is funny after worrying it was going to be short!
