Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@crabette such a nervy moment peering at my thermometer in the dark praying it's still high ha. Those look near enough a positive yes! x

Flowerkm · 02/08/2020 18:32

@MintGreenLife I would see what see what your temp does and then test, 12DPO is pretty good and Im sure you would see something ☺️ its so tempting isn't it?? 🙈

@crabette i would say they're positive. Heres my two, the single strip is the evening before and then the 2 positive ones are the morning after my high. Looking back, the control line looks really light actually

@Flowerkm I think as this is only my second month TTC maybe I'll let myself do a FRER tomorrow if my temp is still up. It's been really high the last two days - up from around 36.7 to 36.86 yesterday and 36.90 today. Think if I'm going to carry on wanting to test early every cycle I best buy some super cheap tests, otherwise could become an expensive habit 😂 Xx

Flowerkm · 02/08/2020 18:48

@MintGreenLife haha!! Treat yourself this month but i agree that some cheap ones are probably needed if we test early then use the expensive ones nearer AF or if we think theres a small line 😂 xx

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 18:51

@Flowerkm that's a good strategy 😂 I'll invest in some cheapie ones for next cycle! Are you excited to properly get on with TTC once AF is done with? Xx

crabette · 02/08/2020 19:05

@mintgreenlife It's so hard half asleep peering at the numbers in the dark!! 😂 Fingers crossed for you. When is AF due?

@Flowerkm What's the smiley face test? I waited a couple more mins and the lines on mine definitely seem clearer, I'm pretty sure it's positive. Wish it was digital, less room for interpretation!!

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 19:11

@crabette I'm always shining my phone screen at my thermometer and squinting at 4.30am 😂 Not sure how OH hasn't got annoyed at me yet! AF is due Wednesday, so not long to go now.

I'm sure those are positives ☺️ The key is to see the lines get fainter again, and then you know that was your peak x

Flowerkm · 02/08/2020 20:05

@MintGreenLife i am ☺️ although i worked out some dates and its my sisters wedding the end of April so if i do fall next month its makes my due date just after her wedding or if Im early by just 2 weeks then Id have a baby or even be in hospital. Im maid of honour so i need to be pretty active on the day, she’s obviously said its fine but i think Ill feel more confident trying in September as I want her to have the most perfect day and I want to be able to support her. Thats me also assuming my cycles are ok 🙈

@crabette It's the Clearblue Digital tests that can detect 4 or more fertile days. The static smiley face basically means peak, have a google at them as they are quite good but a bit more money than the others so i used it when my strips got a peak and it was to just back them up so i knew it was right.
Id say yours are a positive, very dark lines and then just test in the morning to see if they go down and then you know it was a peak. Mine went down within 12 hours so all happened super quick xx

Juno231 · 02/08/2020 20:27

@crabette that second lot look positive to me!

@MintGreenLife that chart looks great! Has FF said it's triphasic yet? Looks like it has the potential to. I think you can test tomorrow tbh as a BFN at 12dpo is pretty conclusive.

My chart is still plodding along, hoping for some higher temps in the next few days!

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 21:14

@Juno231 ok you've convinced me, doesn't take much! If my temp is still high tomorrow I'll test first thing. Nope FF hasn't suggested it's triphastic, at least I don't think so. Didn't know that was a thing so not sure where it would say. I did have a small glass of wine both nights, but surely that wouldn't have made that big a difference, and I made sure I didn't have it too late in the evening and drank lots of water afterwards.

Well at least your temps are staying at that higher level now ☺️ As I got a BFN on Friday at 9DPO I'm not feeling massively hopeful for tomorrow, but we shall see x

Juno231 · 02/08/2020 21:54

@MintGreenLife bear in mind even if you are pregnant there's only like a 50% of it showing at 9dpo so you're far from out :)

Check the below for some stats if interested!

Juno231 · 02/08/2020 21:57

BTW in FF you can click "pregnancy monitor" then "show early pregnancy signs tool" (or something similar) and it gives you lots of jibber jabber as per the attached.

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 22:10

Thanks so much @Juno231 will check out those stats. Ahh I think maybe as I use the free version of Fertility Friend I can't get access to that. Guessing you pay a monthly subscription? How much is it? X

OP posts:
crabette · 02/08/2020 22:40

@Flowerkm ahhh ok thanks, I'll check those out! Will yest again tomorrow and see if I can catch a dip.

@Juno231 These were the same tests?! I just left them an extra few minutes, maybe impatient with the first pics 🙈

@mintgreenlife Everything crossed for you for testing tomo! 🤞

Juno231 · 03/08/2020 06:44

@crabette haha I totally missed that. Glad you seem to have ovulated though!

@MintGreenLife ah yes could be. Got no clue what I'm paying tbh 🙊.

Had another uptick in temp today which makes me happy :)

crabette · 03/08/2020 08:05

@Juno231 Your chart is looking great!!! Will you test soon?

Juno231 · 03/08/2020 08:30

@crabette the plan is to test on Thursday before I head off on a potentially boozy weekend! That would make me 11DPO.

MintGreenLife · 03/08/2020 09:13

Morning all :)

I tested first thing and got a BFN on a FRER, so assume that's me out. Only issue I have is I can't technically use FMU as I always get up to go in the night, so I guess I tested on around a 4 hour hold.

Not feeling too disappointed as this was only our second cycle trying, although that's felt like a long time with having such long cycles. Think I can take a positive from this cycle that I actually ovulated and had a normal luteal phase. Only slight disappointment is due date would have fit in really well with our postponed wedding next year, if we don't catch next cycle it's all getting a bit iffy argh.

@Juno231 yay for the increase in temp! Mine went down slightly this morning to 36.76, but is still pretty high. I'm assuming it will drop down in the next day or two and AF will come. Kind of just want it to come now so we can get on with the next cycle. Really hope I ovulate earlier than CD36 this time! x

OP posts:
Juno231 · 03/08/2020 09:23

@MintGreenLife ah I'm sorry for the BFN. Like you said though, second cycle is very early stages still, especially after the pill. It's funny that your decrease in temp is basically what my increase was! Am hoping it will rise a bit more in the next few days though.

I think you're in a really good spot for a slightly more normal cycle next time!

MintGreenLife · 03/08/2020 09:29

Thanks @Juno231 :) I wasn't expecting much to be honest. Also with having no clue when I would ovulate it was so hard to time DTD - around the time I did ovulate i was kind of giving up on this cycle, so I know we didn't cover it as well as we should have. Perhaps now I know I can ovulate we will just really stick at every other day in case my next cycle is still all over the place. Not getting any PMS at the mo, so feels like AF isn't going to come, but sure it'll kick in in a day or two.

Hope your temps rise also! Now I want mine to start going down ha x

Flowerkm · 03/08/2020 10:24

@MintGreenLife Morning :) sorry to hear its a BFN but like you said massive positives have come from this cycle 😀 hope AF arrives this week and you can begin your next cycle with lots of positives xx

MintGreenLife · 03/08/2020 10:34

@Flowerkm thanks :) Don't think I replied to your message about your sister's wedding yesterday! Do you think you'll hold off TTC this cycle then, or going to just go with the flow and see what happens? xx

OP posts:
crabette · 03/08/2020 11:18

Sorry for the BFN @mintgreenlife 😢 But as @Juno231 says, it's good to know you ovulated and hopefully get a slightly better cycle next month?

All my fingers crossed for you @Juno231!!

I've done another LH this morning (11am) and it's definitely negative, so according to my app and results yesterday this means I'm ovulating today? No temperature spike yet though, so not sure if that's possible. See what happens tomo 🤷🏻‍♀️

@crabette thanks :) quite possibly! BBT doesn't spike until the day after ovulation, so you won't know for sure until tomorrow, and until you've had a few days of higher temps. I didn't get a positive OPK this cycle, but from my temps I clearly ovulated. I would get DTD just in case :)

Hi all :)

I've been reading though this with interest - thanks @MintGreenLife for starting this and for everyone's messages. It's frustrating I'm sure to have these symptoms (or lack of) but it's nice to know I'm not alone! I've been off the pill a few months now and TTC so thought I'd shed some insight into my situation.

I came off the pill after 16 years for birth control from age 17 and now 33 TTC my 1st. I Now however I'm regretting being on for so long as I can't remember what my cycle used to be like!
I had asked the nurse at my last pill check-up appointment last year how long I would need to go off before and she said I could get pregnant straight away, which I know happens to some, so I didn't bother going off earlier but wish I did now.

I went off in March this year with the idea of starting to try in July. I had a withdrawal bleed but then no bleeding/spotting at all until day 100 - coincidentally the day after I had a phone appointment with the nurse about it! She suggested a blood test which I went for anyway and everything came back as normal. The nurse suggested pregnacare, which I am taking as well as a magnesium and further B vitamin (particularly as I'm vegetarian). She also suggested folic acid and zinc for my partner.

I counted that first day of spotting as a period just to get an idea of my cycle. I then started using the cheap OPKs and had a positive surge on CD 20 but must have had a short luteal phase as I had my first proper period 8 days later. I've heard that a shorter luteal phase can happen after stopping the pill and I've heard of other people with this issue, though it also got me a little concerned with regards to my oestrogen vs progesterone levels. My period was lighter than my withdrawal bleed but it did last 5 days (2 days of spotting). Since the end of June I've been having spotting quite often - every 1-2 weeks, so I have gone from no period to plenty of spotting!

I'm now on CD 23 of my next cycle with no ovulation yet. I am temping but it's early days so hard to read (no obvious rise apart from 1 day after a few drinks), plus using cheap OPKs and checking CM.

Other symptoms have included having a few days of acne around my chin after 2 months - never had bad acne even in my teens so this was unusual for me, but this has cleared up in the last month or so. My boobs have ached a lot, particularly within the past month since i started bleeding again. I'm taking that as a good sign. Also some cramping but not as bad as I feared.

I read a lot online that most people should be back to normal by 3 months but some threads from personal experiences say otherwise. I know it'll probably take some time, it's just frustrating not knowing my cycles!
