Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

@TheDaydreamBelievers no worries. I expect you're right. At least over time the issue with birth control should lessen and then disappear, difficult though as of course causes you stress when you have gone so long without AF! X

@MintGreenLife that's super helpful! I'd better reduce my alcohol intake and work towards reducing stress as well. I'm a naturally anxious/stressed person which I'm sure isn't helping things.

MintGreenLife · 31/07/2020 14:20

@Juno231 glad you found it helpful ☺️ At least yours is under the 'mildly high' level X

@MintGreenLife just took another OPK after 2 days of 'high'. Absolutely zero. Nada. Zilch. My first reaction was 'Well MintGreenLife did warn me' Grin

Given how hot it is today, I had drunk 2 coffees and half a litre of water this morning, but I held on for three hours and the only drinks between last wee and this one was probably 1/4 litre of water?

Never mind!

MintGreenLife · 31/07/2020 17:15

@lawandgin 😂 Could you have possibly missed your peak? You never know! Sound more positive than my first cycle using OPKs - I would just have one day high, back low again for several days, all of a sudden high again! X

OP posts:
lawandgin · 31/07/2020 18:02

@MintGreenLife I honestly have no idea anymore! Will just keep testing and trying not to lose the will to live

TheDaydreamBelievers · 01/08/2020 23:22

Any ideas why my temps have jumped back up? The past 3 days its 36.6, 36.7, 36.85 with all OPKs near blank? Maybe I'm getting unwell Hmm

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 00:41

@TheDaydreamBelievers what kind of level is your temp usually? If it's up again over the next few days could be ovulation?! You could have had a really short surge of LH and missed it? How often are you doing OPKs? Has the app that you use for BBT added a coverline or possible ovulation prediction? X

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 02/08/2020 00:47

My app (natural cycles) says I have never ovulated and only estimates a period in 2 days @MintGreenLife (but it's been saying that since I went over cd30)

It gives a cover line at 36.52. My usual temp is 36.4ish.

I take OPKs once a day in early afternoon. They got to about 30% colour quite a few days ago and since then have been near blank.

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 00:57

@TheDaydreamBelievers I didn't get a positive OPK this cycle, only 70% and now I've had 10'clear days of a high temp. Keep an eye on it for a few days and I think if it stays high for another few days it looks like you've ovulated x

Morning ☺️ How is everyone today? Hope you're all having a lovely weekend. My temp is still going up and am 11DPO now. Never thought I would feel like this but actually feels good to be in the TWW!

Morning @MintGreenLife 😊 AF appeared for me yesterday - properly! So I have changed the dates in my apps and marked the spotting last weekend as just that. It now estimates ovulation on the days when I had highest % on OPKs, so I either didn't ovulate or I missed my surge. I don't mind, I'm just happy it's here! I guess my high OPKs on Wednesday and Thursday may mean I'm one of those people who gets a small surge before AF. Good news on your temperature and fingers crossed for you!

@DayDreamBelievers I'm not temping so I'm not sure I can help, but I thought temp rose before AF? X

Flowerkm · 02/08/2020 11:31

@MintGreenLife Hey ☺️ Im good today thank you, making the most of the warm weekends. How are you? Sounds like you've ovulated for sure. Thats so nice to in the TWW, how do you feel? Any symptoms? X

lawandgin · 02/08/2020 11:35

Ops sorry, that should have been @TheDaydreamBelievers !

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 12:25

@lawandgin well that's good news overall ☺️ On to the next cycle! Hopefully you'll get a clearer surge this cycle and that will put your mind at rest. To be honest I didn't get a positive OPK this cycle, but my temps confirm I did ovulate, so it's easily missed x

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 12:28

@Flowerkm I'm so chuffed to have made it to 11DPO to be honest, as I was worried once I did ovulate I might have a short luteal phase, but seems all good ☺️

It's been locely this weekend hasn't it. We went for a long walk and a picnic in the Cotswolds yesterday which was so nice.

No symptoms really. Had sensitive nipples from around 5/6DPO I think and still got them now. I'm feeling pretty tired and groggy today, but think that's just from hosting this weekend and being generally pretty busy. Don't think I'll test until after AF is late, think it's predicted for Wednesday. You must be expecting AF soon? X

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 02/08/2020 12:43

@MintGreenLife Aww thats so good, 11DPO is a brilliant time to get to, thats how far i got and then AF came on Thursday so a 24 day cycle and managed 11 days luteal phase :)
It has been so nice, the Cotswolds sounds beautiful, always wanted to visit, its only about an hour away so need to make that visit i think, especially while its so nice out.
Testing when AF is late sounds good but its always tempting to test 🙈 luckily she came early so I didn’t have to test but i was tempted 😂 xx

MintGreenLife · 02/08/2020 13:05

@Flowerkm I wish I had a 24 day cycle 😂 I think I must be into CD50-something now! Really hope that as I've successfully ovulated and had a good luteal phase this cycle that the next one will be better. Also hoping that if I do get AF it'll be heavier than the last two. Who'd have thought we'd be wishing for a heavier AF 😂

Ahh you really should go. It's about a 30 min drive for us so we go every few months or so for a nice long walk.

I did do a test at 9DPO to try and help me make a decision about whether to have a drink this weekend, but was BFN. Wasn't very helpful as I get that's super early to test 🙈 Xx

@MintGreenLife Haha! Funny what we wish for isn’t it?
I reckon your next cycle will be a lot shorter as you’ve had a much better cycle this month, its settling down now it seems! I know, for the time in years Ive hoped for a decent AF and actually its been ok, not massively heavy but Ive never suffered with heavy flows. I do think it’s been enough to warrant this as a real AF though which is good, 4th day today and think by tomorrow Ill be finished ☺️
Oh wow! Thats really close, deffo worth the trip then. Love a good walk, so relaxing.
You could always test in a few days and i think you’d get a result but then xx

Elsie2021 · 02/08/2020 14:55

@MintGreenLife so pleased for you that it seems like you ovulated!

I’m CD 42 now but I haven’t been temping or OPKs to know if I might have ovulated so for next month I’ve bought a thermometer and downloaded the Femometer app just to hopefully put my mind at rest that I am ovulating! Just want AF to come now so I can start again. I did get a lot of EWCM around day 35 so if I did ovulate I should be due on around Wednesday so it would be nice if I did come on then cause then I could think I did ovulate then.

Elsie2021 · 02/08/2020 14:56

Oops that should be CD30

crabette · 02/08/2020 17:21

@mintgreenlife It sounds so good for yous that your temp is still high!! So pleased for you.

I've done 2 LH's today.... these are positive right?! 🙏

@Flowerkm glad AF has been OK for you! I used to have really heavy periods as a teenager, and they got a bit better, but then I went on the pill around 17/18 and last two have been really light, so expect at least a bit of a heavier flow! I've been reading online about testing and when is best...slightly tempted to test tomorrow at 12DPO, but will be my last FRER, have a couple of CB ones too. I think I'll see what my temp does tomorrow and decide from that. I was so sure I would leave it until AF was late, but kind of having second thoughts now ha x

@Elsie2021 sounds like we're near enough at the exact same stage - AF is due for me on Wednesday too, think I'm CD47 or something now, so I ovulated late also. It's well worth charting your BBT I think, as much as I've had points that I wished I didn't know quite so well what was going on (as got pretty frustrating) I feel so good now knowing I have ovulated. Think for me that's better than being completely in the dark x
