Hi everyone,

Me and my husband have made the decision to try for a baby - we had a talk last month after I thought I might be pregnant (we weren't actively trying) and after 12 years together feel that now is the right time.

I'm feeling really excited and a little nervous - I know it may take a while and I just want to be as prepared as possible and be doing as many of the right things as I can.

What do people recommend for trying to get pregnant? Is anyone else in the same boat and would like to keep in touch/progress?

I'm due to finish AF in around 2 days and due to ovulate around 28th according to my tracker app - I've got folic acid and vitamin D arriving tomorrow that I can start taking, what else can I be doing to prepare as much as possible? I know it sounds silly, but do we just start 'trying' as soon as my period is over?

Look forward to speaking to you all soon!

Thanks,

Bee x

@BeeR2009 how are you doing? Your post has exploded a little! Are you going to use OPKs this month?

LennyAndToots · 23/05/2020 09:37

Yeah I've been delaying going to the loo haha! That pineapple theory - what on earth!?!?

My AF is due on 4th which is OH's birthday eeek.

Peach1204 · 23/05/2020 09:41

@LennyAndToots oh no. We were taking my dad to old Trafford for a match and getting that refunded. Fingers crossed you'll get a BFP soon so then they can cancel. Xxx

Daffodil21 · 23/05/2020 09:42

Oh also to add.. as well as pineapples for pre-ovulation, I've read that Brazil nuts are supposed to be good for implantation. I read somewhere that people had been advised to eat them when undertaking IVF but I can't remember where I read that/how reliable it is. I remember reading that 2-3 per day would be enough though so worth a go I guess!

SaraVB · 23/05/2020 09:43

@MintGreenLife I'm trying to track CM for the first time this month but honestly I have no idea what I'm doing.. really hope I can actually tell a difference once I'm ovulating. Maybe TMI but last month I knew I wasn't pregnant because I could feel that my cervix was really low and hard toward s the end of the cycle. Apparently if you're pregnant should be high and soft.

I had a trip home to visit my parents booked for July but my flights have already been cancelled. Also have another trip with the girls booked in august but don't have high hopes for that one either. Just hope I can go home for Christmas at this point!

Vil10 · 23/05/2020 09:43

@Peach1204 @SK2970 I have a friend who’s a midwife and a friend who’s a nurse and they told me it’s a myth having your legs up (I had to ask them I was curious haha) They even said going to the toilet within a few minutes doesn’t really make a difference, but if you want to wait there’s no harm in doing so, as for vitamins the nhs only recommenced folic acid and vit D and vit D is only recommended between September-March, but i can’t see the harm in giving yourself that extra boost and having it! But I’m also one of these people who will try things if it apparently works, I had grapefruit is good for ewcm, unfortunately I didn’t get chance to try it before this cycle but if I don’t get pregnant this time (fingers crossed I do) I will be sure to try that, might make a meal or grapefruit juice and pineapple😂x

Peach1204 · 23/05/2020 09:44

@SK2970 I'm currently on day 4 of AF so heading into fertility window next week. I know what you mean about the butterflies! As soon as we said let's try it's made me want it more. If I have no luck with the seven seas tablets once I've finished them I'm going to move to folic acid and vitamin d separately to see if that changes anything. Sorry to hear your tablets haven't been kind to you. Xxx

SaraVB · 23/05/2020 09:49

@LennyandToots ask your parents to check the terms of rebooking because I've heard that if your flight is cancelled some of the terms for changing dates or cancellation later can be much better than usual. I booked flights for Christmas and I only have a 5euro cancellation charge and get refunded the rest if I decide not to go. I'm sure the tickets would be easy to sell if you wanted to as well.

SaraVB · 23/05/2020 09:51

@Peach1204 I'm going to try the same with the vitamins. Plus not really sure which ones are helpful and which are not aside from folic acid and vitamin D. Don't want to accidentally cause more harm than good by taking a lot of unnecessary stuff!

LennyAndToots · 23/05/2020 09:55

Thanks for the tip @SaraVB, will set up a call with them soon to go through it all. X

HJen22 · 23/05/2020 09:59

@SaraVB I've been taking folic acid and multi vitamins - should I specifically be taking vit D too or reckon multi would be ok?

Away to cut down the caffeine too, to just one morning coffee a day!

MintGreenLife · 23/05/2020 10:15

@SaraVB I think you'll be able to. I spotted it last month without even looking, and then have been to pee in the last 30 mins and have it for the first time this month too, so that's confirmed for me my app is right and I'm in my fertile period now. It's halarious how excited I get at tiny little things, could have done a little dance in the bathroom 🙈 Hoping I get a positive on OPKs today, will test twice I think and defo DTD.

Oh it's so awful how many plans this is ruining for everyone 😢 God yeah I'm with you, really hope I can see my family for Christmas. They are in Scotland and I'm in Bristol, so no chance of seeing them anytime soon xx

MintGreenLife · 23/05/2020 10:19

@SaraVB when I say I spotted 'it' meant EWCM 🙈

Peach1204 · 23/05/2020 10:25

@Vil10 I'm like you, will try it just in case! I find a lot of things food wise they say are good I don't like but if it gets to it I'll suck it up and have it! Xxx

Peach1204 · 23/05/2020 10:28

@SaraVB I'm the same - wasn't sure what was best. I was taking some supplements to help clear my skin but they have a lot of vitamin A and I'm sure I heard too much of that isn't good. It said on the label to stop taking if trying for a baby so I've stopped those, my skin hates me! In fact I think my whole body hates me right now as I feel so bloated and have defs put on weight! The tablets were expensive so I'm just going to put them away for when I can use them again. Xxx

Vil10 · 23/05/2020 10:37

@Peach1204 exactly! There’s no harm in trying!
So I got strong positives on opks again on fmu today for the 3rd day in a row, I’ve been testing with fmu then waiting and testing again at like 1/2 and it’s always been even darker, I was a bit gutted because I thought my ovulation day was yesterday and we didn’t get to DTD as OH was at work, so now that I’ve had such a strong positive with my fmu I’m so happy!! He just needs to get home now haha!x

SaraVB · 23/05/2020 11:19

@HJen22 I would say that just make sure you're not doubling up on the same vitamins.. meaning check your multivitamins to see that they don't already contain vitamin d or folic acid. There's a suggested dosage for these things. The vitamin d is prescribed in particular months due to lack of sunshine so I guess as long as you're getting some time outside and producing that vitamin naturally it shouldn't be necessary.

SaraVB · 23/05/2020 11:22

@MintGreenLife actually that's good really helpful. I'll keep an eye out for a change then.

Not sure about trying these foods... I think we're moving towards old wives tails and superstition here so not sure I'm going to try that.

Also too cheap to throw the multivitamins away so I'll just replace them when they run out. Mine have folic acid in them anyway and I live in Portugal so plenty of vitamin D.

HJen22 · 23/05/2020 11:55

@SaraVB ah thank you! Good advice - just googled the multivitamins and they contain folic acid at 200µg and 5.0µg of vitamin D. Wow confusing.

I read you should take between 400-800mcg of folic acid when trying to get pregnant. There is 200µg in the multivitamins - and 400µg in the specific folic acid tables. Not sure what the µg stands for!?

HJen22 · 23/05/2020 11:58

Ah so now I've read not to take any vitamin A supplements which are in the multivitamins. Should have researched this! Just assumed multivitamins would be good! So best idea I guess is to continue with the folic acids tablets and get some specific Vitamin D ones too!

FridaKFangirl · 23/05/2020 12:08

Hi @BeeR2009 and all, been lurking for a couple of weeks and asked a couple of questions, but now I've taken my last pill on Friday, expect my withdrawal bleed Mon/Tues- Thurs/Fri (usually pretty standard)... I've been on the Seven Seas Trying for a Baby Folic/Vit D supplements for a couple of weeks so we are officially TTC #1! Yikes, exciting times for us all Smile

LOG8 · 23/05/2020 12:13

Can I join? I’m 32 and in sunny sunny Scotland (I’m ignoring the current wind and rain Hmm) . This is my first month of TTC So totally clueless. I’m only taking folic acid at the moment as it is recommended on the NHS site. I’m trying to eat a healthy diet to get the rest of my vitamins but I’ve been dithering about taking vitamin D as it’s the summer months now, but then I am in Scotland.....

LennyAndToots · 23/05/2020 12:22

Hi @LOG8 and welcome. It's all about reading tips on chats like this. It's also my first month TTC and when I joined I was beyond clueless! I'm just taking folic acid at the moment also. I want to get some vit D tablets also but given that it's the summer months, recommendation is sept - March, so I don't feel too bad that I haven't been taking them!

FridaKFangirl · 23/05/2020 12:30

Hi @LOG8, Sounds like we're at similar stages. I found the Seven Seas supplement had both Folic Acid recommended amount and Vit D so it's only the one thing to remember... Was 3 for 2 at Superdrug too! :)

Aokbaby · 23/05/2020 12:39

Hi can I joint this thread too? Just started using opks, currently on cd 18 and got this this morning (see pic) would you ladies say it's positive for ovulation? Pic isn't great but both lines match in real life! Was really starting to panic I wasn't ovulating but this looks promising, any help much appreciated xx
