Thought someone better start a new thread as we're getting close to the 1000 mark!
Ready - what's your question?

BellaBear · 17/04/2007 13:19

Oh well done fleacircus! I will post my knits on my page and we can compare! (I brought my little cardi into school today to show off)

fleacircus · 17/04/2007 14:02

Thank you all of you! Very excited but it still doesn't seem real. Really looking forward to getting on with some little person knitting when the books arrive; so far I've been using the Stitch and Bitch book which is good but the projects are quite ambitious. Did loads on trains in France and Spain while on holiday - even made a jumper. Haven't sewn the pieces together yet as I suspect that's the point at which I will have to acknowledge what a mess I've made of it. Also made a felted bag for my SIL - well, so far a knitted bag, haven't got round to the felting part yet! It is very therapeutic though and gives me something different to be obsessive about for a change.

geekInPigtails · 17/04/2007 16:16

Already said this on the antenatal thread, but congratulations fleacircus! It's so nice to have a familiar name around I'm a recent convert to knitting too, and I've been using the same book! I wouldn't let myself start any baby projects before the BFP, and since then I've been finishing off things I'd already started for people's birthdays. To be honest, I've not done much recently because all I want to do in the eves is sleep - even knitting is too much effort! But hopefully that'll pass soon.

citydevilbunny, I started an antenatal thread for first timers, here . It's a bit quiet at the moment to be honest, but I'm sure it'll pick up, especially when more of you get over there!

PinkElephant · 18/04/2007 09:04

Where did averyone go? Hellooo....Ready....MrcMcJr.....Gilly.....Scorpio....Nomore.....Seaside.....Bellabear.....and everyone else I've missed.....????

Woodmouse · 18/04/2007 12:47

yes, it's been very quiet the last couple of days. I think everyone must be off furiously BD'ing or something so we have something to report next week!

cityangel · 18/04/2007 12:58

I'm here too.
Did we ever get the photos links thing sorted out?
I would encourage my kids to play an instrument if they showed an interest in doing so, but I wouldn't force it. I did violin to grade 2, but was awful at it! DH enjoys playing guitar, but only for fun. It's the same for sport, if they showed an interest I'd follow it up, but I wouldn't force them (I will force them to be active though!) Mind you both those things can get expensive, so there might be a financial cut off point. Maybe I should encourage then to take up a cheap hobby - any ideas?

OP posts:
BellaBear · 18/04/2007 14:09

ooooo yes. I leanred violin up to grade 4 (failed that), recorder until secondary age and piano (grade 5 or 6. 5 probably. or even 4). I wasn't a very musical child! But I can still play a tune on the recorder or piano, I can follow rules but I am not innately musical. I do think that it is enriching generally to be able to make music.

good question.

Woodmouse · 18/04/2007 14:28

good luck at the hospital cityangel.

i'd definitely encourage my children to take up a musical instrument - whatever takes their fancy - and see how they go from there. I'd hope they'd take up the bagpipes LOL (I'm Scottish), although the old ear drums might regret it! I have a couple of friends who do and they made loads of money playing at weddings and funerals and stuff when they were students.

I'm the least musical person ever, but my grandma was a professional pianist. She was a very scary lady and wouldn't let us go near her piano when we were wee in case we dirtied it with our childish sticky fingers. We would have been too frightened to! Think that put me off music a bit.

MrsMcJnr · 18/04/2007 16:18

Desperate to catch up with you all but haven't got time now, but I will, soon! Hope you are all ok! Scorpio - what a family of beautiful big brown eyes you all are!

PinkElephant · 18/04/2007 18:18

Again only if they showed an interest. Both me and my sister were forced into piano lessons from and early age up until 12yrs. I absolutely hated it, I also tried the clarinet and hated that too... I'm just so unmusical!! I have to say now I feel no urge to play the piano and cannot see how it helped me in all those years of dredding wednesday nights at the piano teachers house. I guess I would encourage only what they wanted to do.... but I may just push a little sport activity their way as I do think kids aren't as outdoorsy as we were when we were younger
City - how did you get on?

graysongirl · 18/04/2007 19:29

Hello Everyone. This is my first post but am gulity of lurking on MN for a few months now. TTC #1 for 10 months and currently in the 2WW. 3 days away from Af due and going slightly crazy..... Its the first month I've really thought I might be pg as had the sorest boobs and a pain under my armpit around 6 dpo which lasted a few days but has now disappeared. I keep veering from getting excited then pulling myself back to try and avoid the upset when i get a BFN. Refuse to test before AF is at least a day late as I know i'll just be guttted and have to obsessively test again few days later. Feel like a total nutter .

graysongirl · 18/04/2007 19:31

Quick comment on the thread about music lessons, I think it doesn't matter what kind of activity your kids do as long they do one. Was a dancing girl myself (ballet not lap!!)

BellaBear · 18/04/2007 20:18

Welcome graysongirl! Nice to meet you

nomoremagnolia · 18/04/2007 22:01

Hello Graysongirl, welcome to the madness that is ttc no1. you'll find loads of lovely people on here to help you get through the ups and downs.

OP posts:
fleacircus · 19/04/2007 12:26

I did loads, ballet, piano, violin, orchestra. Don't know how much I really enjoyed any of it, TBH. Read an interesting comment a long time ago on this subject: at the end of a long day at work, would you rather relax at home with a G&T and watch tv, or go to a seminar suggested by your employer? I know which I'd pick! Obviously if my child expresses an interest in taking up these kinds of activities I'd support them but I certainly wouldn't want them to feel any obligation to do it. On the other hand DP and I are both keen to do active family things like swimming and cycling together; DP's superfit but I grew up in a very unsporty family and do feel the lack of it.

fleacircus · 19/04/2007 12:26

Hi Graysongirl - the waiting's awful isn't it? Good luck!

Ready · 19/04/2007 13:19

Geek - I am so excited for you. Can?t wait to see your scan pic.

Graysongirl - Welcome to the thread. Sounds like you are really going through the mill of emotions this 2ww! I feel for you! I am 2DPO at the moment, in my 8th cycle, and not feeling very confident at all. ROFL at your ballet not lap comment. At first I thought I had misread tap as lap ? then the penny dropped

Fleacircus - Congratulations again, flower! How exciting. How long were you ttc?

Nomoremagnolia - I am the same, I have had to step away from the monthly threads, as I just can?t keep up with them.
I still haven?t received a reply from MN about the Mumsnet mates thingy. Don?t know why it is taking them so long to respond. Obviously not important enough.

PinkElephant - How goes it? Are you enjoying yourself this month
I totally agree with you about the lack of outdoor activities that children are involved in these days. I remember we were always out on our bikes as children, or climbing trees, or building camps in the woods ? we even used to swim in the river I know that today is more about assessing the risks than letting children be children, so there needs to be a balance. It will be difficult to know what to do for the best won?t it.

Gilly - How did the interviews go? I giggled at your latest question ? very interesting. Of course you don?t sound like future pushy parents! I would certainly encourage my children to play an instrument, but only if they showed an interest. I played the oboe at school, but gave up when I started Upper school, and my Mum was totally cool about giving up. Though part of me now wishes she had encouraged me to stick with it, but I was giving up to spend more time on school work ? so it was the right reasons. DH played the piano and is very good ? but he gave up the gradings because he didn?t enjoy it. His Mum was also fine about stopping. So I think it is good to give them the opportunity to learn something ? but to not be draconian about it. I will encourage the piano, I think ? because we will have one in the house anyway. But the only thing I would be worried about them wanting to learn is the drums ? my brother learnt the drums, but thankfully it was short-lived! Oh the noise!!

Woodmouse - I think you were right, well, I certainly haven?t had time to be on MN over the last few days, and it coincidentally was the crucial part of the cycle
Crikey ? I think I need to add Bagpipes to my list of no-go instruments. They sound really beautiful when played well ? but I can?t imagine a child learning them.

Anyone see the episode of Friends where Ross learns Celebrate on the bagpipes?

Bella - PMSL at you saying you were not a musical child, yet you play piano to grade level, violin to grade level

Everyone else - hope all is well

Chocolatedays · 19/04/2007 13:32

hello all, what a lovely long post Ready! It sounds like were using the time off from MN very usefully . Fingers crossed! It's still a bit quiet on the threads, although I have been lurking when I get a sec in the office - MrsMcJ usually keeps the threads ticking along beautifully, so she's been missed.

gillyD - think you've started something on the old musical instrument thing! Cello would be great - (anyone remember Fame and that woman who played the cello? - very cool). I'd get as ASBO slapped on me if Woodmouse Junior ever took up bagpipes . In the wrong hands, they sound like someone trying to milk a dying cat (sorry to all catlovers!).

Geek/fleacircus - huge congratulations!

any news from Cityangel, seaside, scorpio, and bellabear?

grayson girl - hello and welcome

i went out and bought some preganancy tests at lunchtime in preparation for next week, although walked for ages to go a Boots where I wouldn't bump into anyone I knew in RL when holding a test!! I don't like being so furtive about TTC when I can be so open with you guys . Does everyone behave like that?

Any news?

Hello all, I have just realised that I am particularly spotty at the moment and then I realised that that is a definite symptom of being in the second half of my cycle - now would that happen even if I was going to be pregnant, given that it is a symptom that starts before my body would know that I am pregnant? Or is it a sign that my period will surely arrive? Anything more imaginative than 'just wait and see' would be appreciated!

Ready - honestly, grade 4 can be achieved by just following instructions, something that as a mathematician I can do easily. Anything higher and you really need a 'feel' for music. And I only just scraped the garde 4s. Ah the memories!
