Hi ladies, just thought I'd share this info I found about ovulation after miscarriage, it is copied from the tww forum:

Can you ovulate with HCG in your system?
After much searching and researching I have come to the conclusion that yes you can. It is the progesterone and estrogen concentrations that prevent ovulation while you are pregnant...not HCG. In fact HCG is used in both IVF and as trigger shots in women to help ovulation along. This is the number one misinformation I have found.

Also, many women say that ovulation usually doesn't happen the cycle after miscarriage...but then I found this article:

Return of ovarian function following spontaneous abortion.

Assays of first morning urine samples for oestrone-3-glucuronide, LH and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide, were used to study endocrine function and return to ovulation in 18 subjects following spontaneous miscarriage. On the basis of the endocrine data, ovulation occurred in all 18 women in the cycle prior to first menses at a mean of 29 days post-partum (range 13-103 days) with one subject conceiving in that cycle. Compared with the second cycle, the first cycle after spontaneous abortion had similar levels of follicular phase peak ovulatory oestrone excretion but lower levels during the late luteal phase (P less than 0.02), lower levels of peak LH (50.5 IU/g creatinine (C) cf. 68.8 IU/g C; P less than 0.04) and lower late secretory peak pregnanediol (4.6 mg/g C cf. 6.1 mg/g C; P less than 0.02). The mean luteal phase length of 12.9 days in the first cycle was shorter than the mean of 14.4 days in the second cycle (P less than 0.02). These data show that, although there is some disturbance of endocrine function in the first cycle after spontaneous abortion, the majority of women have a rapid return to ovulation, making the early use of contraception necessary for those wishing to avoid conception.

So it looks like MOST women do ovulate the cycle after a miscarriage, and I think most are assuming they don't because they know HCG is still in their system.

Very confusing!

I just wanted to get your thoughts on these findings, since I know a lot of you have researched extensively as well.

I am finding it hard to get the right answers. Some personal experiences would definitely help!

Sorry, I also forgot to mention in my research, I found HCG causes the Corpus luteum to keep producing progesterone which does inhibit Ovulation (not HcG directly) however, this is only in doses above 100IU. In doses such as 60IU, it does not cause the CL to produce progesterone, which then means you are free to ovulate. There fore after a miscarriage when your HCG levels get to be about 50-100iu (still testing positive on HPT) you could actually ovulate. In case folks are scientific and would like to see the study :
Clin Endocrinol (Oxf). 2000 Sep;53(3):345-50.
Corpus luteum response to exogenous HCG during the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
Tay PY, Lenton EA.

It showed levels of 140iu and above, demonstrated prompt increases in progesterone secretion. However 60iu did not have the same effect.

I though that was very interesting that you could still ovulate whilst testing positive if hcg is below 100!

As for me nothing today. Bit of blood in cm yesterday followed by very light spotting. I am a bit of a serial spotter though so no doubt I'll have 5 or so days of this teasing before af finally arrives!!

I know I definitely ovulated as did an opk and very positive. I had my BFN less than a week after erpc though so ccan't comment on hcg levels.

Mama this is very interesting! I had my posi OPK last week and disregarded it as thought the positive had been caused by my HCG levels. I know my OPK might still have been wrong but it's very encouraging to think this cycle may not necessarily be a write-off! And if I didn't ovulate last week then maybe this week? Today is CD18 for me, which is the day I conceived on last time. Think I might do another OPK instead of a pregnancy test tonight. My CM has been very ovulation-y for a week now. Thanks for cheering me up! Smile

Mega it's interesting isn't it?! When did you last do a preggo test? Still showing positive?

Report
Mamama31 · 19/05/2015 11:48

I did an ovulation test yesterday before the cramps/spotting started and it was very negative/blank!!! I last did a preggo test last Sunday and still showed positive. I don't have any more preggo tests in the house so haven't done any more.

Mega did you do a preggo test when your ovulation test showed positive? Be interesting to know if both were positive.

Report
megarobotdiscoparty · 19/05/2015 12:14

Mama a blank sounds really encouraging!! Fingers crossed this is it for you - at long last!

I did my OPK last Weds and it was definitely a positive - not the absolute strongest I've had but as strong as the control line. I then did a preg test on Fri and it was positive with a fairly faint line. I have resisted testing since then but was going to do another preg test tonight.... but think I'll do an OPK instead. My CM is very strongly EW today and reading your research I'm thinking what have I got to lose!! Much more exciting than feeling sad about another preggo test anyway!

Mega so confusing though isn't it? Seems like you may have ovulated last week, or maybe you are ovulating now! Weird bodies, we don't know what's going on. All we can do is keep dtd and hope for the best! Let me know what your ov test result is later.

Had the smallest bit of spotting there, I have no patience...wish full flow would just arrive but I guess I should be happy something is happening!

How is everyone else doing?
What about all you lucky preggo ladies, I hope you are all well?

Hi all - hope you're all doing well.

Who's next to test in their 2ww? I'm currently 6dpo and no symptoms at all so I think I'm probably out this month - when I got pregnant with my mc I had lots of cm after ovulation through to bfp rather than drying up more. I'm sure it won't stop me testing when I get closer to day 14 (next weds) - I don't know how you all hold out until AF time!!

Report
DisneyMillie · 19/05/2015 13:08

mama - I really hope that AF hurries up and I hope you're ovulating mega.

I know we'll all get there and we just need to be patient but I'm finding that so hard. It already seems ages since the mmc at the end if April and only getting one chance a month or 12 a year just seems so rubbish Sad

Disney it is rubbish isn't it? Can't wait until the ttc days are all a distant memory. When I get this little baby finally that's me done! Couldn't possibly go through all of this again.

Disney it's epic and endless isn't it... I'm really bad at thinking "oh if I get pregnant this month it would be a February baby..." then a March baby etc etc, so it always feels like time is slipping away. I am my own worst enemy for being such a daydreamer! You think I would have learned to keep my expectations in check after so many years TTC and after a MC, the biggest hope-dasher of all! I'm such a mug! When do you think you'll hold out til, testing wise? I have no idea how early you can test - I'm a late tester generally (would rather be sure or I drive myself mad).

Mama me too - just one more would be heavenly. Really hope your spotting picks up the pace soon.

Hope everyone else is doing well and keeping busy!

You're not alone megaro I have been known to google my next edd as soon as AF arrives Blush

Red, sorry your aunt and cousin were so insensitive. It's so tricky to know what to say. Whilst telling them the truth would shut them up I totally agree that it is such a private matter that you shouldn't feel pushed to tell them for all what are essentially the wrong reasons. Flowers

10dpo here, AF due on Sunday and I'm feeling cranky, I'm out for sure.

So with a 42 day average cycle I worked out that I only get 8 ovulations per year and add to that DP working abroad on and off between March and November plus the fact that I'm nearly 38...........am I screwed ?????

I forget - which of us have babies already and who are trying for a first ? My mmc was a first pregnancy.

Red that's horrid, I hate when people make stupid insensitive comments, they just have no idea.

Keeping fingers crossed for all in the 2ww!

[adventure] I have an almost 3 yo dd and it took a year to conceive her ... After long and erratic cycles and a chemical pregnancy that is. I was 25 when started trying so I don't think much about the age thing tbh! I've just had a mmc too at 11 weeks preg. That preg was a massive surprise and pretty sure it happened after dtd one time during fertile days (without any thought about it). Life is just a funny bugger sometimes. So far NOT enjoying my 30's I have to say.

Want to jump back on the trying wagon asap! But also do not want to go through the anxiety I experienced last time ttc, it was horrid. So I'm going to be relaxed this time (yeah right).

Adventure I have a 14yo DS from a previous relationship, obvs unplanned being 19yo at the time myself but he is the best thing that has ever happened in my life and I would never change that. Who knew ttc would be so stressful! I naively thought it would be fun and put it off for a few years as well which I now completely regret! Meh! Life's a bitch sometimes!!! But we will get there.

Yep, I do the same thing with due dates. The good news is DD is a late Jan baby and it's a good time to have a baby as it's not too far away from Spring. DS is October and he was really poorly several times when he was tiny because of it being the beginning of the flu season and heading into winter and when we ended up in hospital with him it was full of newborns all with respiratory problems Sad
TTC #3 for us and it will definitely be our last. Agree, cannot wait for the days of TTC and TWWs to be behind me.

I'm sure you'll get there adventure it's just a horrid journey.

I've got a little girl who's 5 but my OH doesn't have children (we met when she was 3 but she still sees her dad (my ex husband) every other week so he'll never be "daddy" to her even if for all purposes he is. I feel huge guilt that I've got my daughter and I lost his child which I know is silly.

I can't imagine having a teenager yet mama - but you'll have a great helper when you get your baby

I hate the 2ww so much!! I'm sure I'm not pregnant this month but I reckon I'll test Monday (AF due weds I think) as I'm addicted to POAS!!

Adventure and Disney, I know, having a teenager makes me feel old even though I'm not really! I was just young when I had him! And he will be the best big brother in the world, he's such a lovely boy he would be a great help! He has a little sister (his dad and GF had a baby a few days after my d&c- timing or what?!) and he is loving being a big brother! I just can't wait until I can give him a sibling also.

So who is poas next? I need to see some bfp's!
