Any older mums ttc (late 30s)?

I was just wondering how many of the ttc people were in their late 30s or 40s.

I am 38 and started ttc this year. It would be nice if we could support each other.

Well, this is ovulation week, so I started the cough syrup yesterday. I really do think it makes a difference. Before, I would wonder if I was going to have cm at all and it would finally show up the last 2 or 3 days, now I'm seeing some around 5 days before expected ovulation date. I'm crossing fingers that it makes a difference this month!

sideways · 20/03/2006 21:45

I should know by the end of the week, but I'm not that hopeful. I am usually really ratty 7 days before af, and this weekend was no exception!

Technical question - how soon before ovulation does cm start to appear?

I think when you are in your twenties it is around 5 or 6 days before, but the older you get the shorter the time frame, hence the benefit of things like evening primrose oil and cough syrup.

riley3 · 20/03/2006 22:45

Nicola63 - bought the Reebok rebounder 2day! Also started on a U R wot U eat diet plan to try and give my system a real boost over the next few months. McKeith reckons bad diet may be implicated in miscarriages and mine was in a class of its own Blush! Also would like to lose ideally 2 stone before ttc and be in the best shape of my life (notwithstanding the age!). As DH and I have just agreed to start ttc again around July/August I'd better get on with things. The fitness drive starts now - but am filing epo & cough medicine info for future reference......

Nicola63 · 21/03/2006 07:06

Good for you Riley! I am now back into ttc with the blessing of my obstetrician, got AF yesterday (exactly 28 days after m/c) and so feel "back to normal" timing-wise anyway. The Rebounder is fun and although I have not really lost any weight yet I am feeling a bit fitter (not hard as I am pretty unfit!). It also makes me laugh (good thing) and makes DH laugh at me. I put it in front of the TV and watch music channels and bounce away.

I know McKeith is not the most scietifically sound person (I am a scientist and she does say a lot of things that are nonsense) but nevertheless I like the principles of her diet, and am continuing to sprout mung beans and alfalfa etc, and try to convice DH (and me) to eat more veggie food. Feel good about it, good luck to you too!

I have blood tests this morning, including a glucose tolerance test for which I had to fast for 12 hours, so feel hungry right now and can't eat for a while, better stop talking about food!

Q: i have cm all the time???? egg white too???? always has been ????

riley3 · 21/03/2006 18:48

Nicola - what McKeith stuff is nonsense - I'd love to know? I don't want to hijack this thread so have started another on the subject - \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=157404&stamp=060321170111\here}. Hope the link works - have never done one before Smile.

OK, so no joy this month. I was getting a little bit hopeful, as it was a bit late and I'm never late.

Off to get EPO and cough medicine this weekend, will start when af ends.

jabberwocky · 23/03/2006 17:06

I'm so sorry. I know that feeling...

Nicola63 · 24/03/2006 09:44

I have got EPO and cough med, also taking extra Vit E and C. Really want to ttc hard this month, but scared after two m/c's, don't know how to cope if this keeps happening.

I told one of my friends about the m/c this week, and she told me about her sister, who had 7 m/c's, then had two babies when she was 44 and 45. They never identified a cause for the m/c's and she just kept trying. I admire that, but not sure how one keeps going through all those.

I'm waiting for the result of thyroid test repeat, when I get it next week will decide whether to go on thyoroid hormone (will do so if the result is still abnormal). Underactive thyroid affects fertility as well as possibly causing m/c so I will start treatment, if it is necessary, as soon as I can.

FirstNikki · 24/03/2006 17:22

Sorry to gategrash but what is epo? Blush

jabberwocky · 24/03/2006 18:14

Nic63, yes thyroid could definitely be an issue for you. I've had hypothyroididsm for years, but well controlled with meds. Once you get pregnant make sure they test you monthly as it can go up and down drastically in pregnancy.

FirstNikki, epo is evening primrose oil, thought to improve cervical mucous - very important for us older mums!

jabberwocky · 26/03/2006 14:44

Expect ovulation any day and am bd'ing like mad. Any baby dust would be greatly appreciated Smile

sideways · 27/03/2006 08:55

Best of luck jabberwocky. Hope this is the month Smile

Nicola63 · 27/03/2006 13:39

I've posted on the ttc after m/c thread, but just to say that my repeat thyroid test was still abnormal and so I am starting on thyroxine. Hoping this will be the key to success.

jabberwocky · 27/03/2006 21:13

It just may make all the difference for you nicola.

I'm starting to wonder if my cycle is wacky again. Should be ovulating now, have some cm but no ewcm yet. Bd'ing anyway, but a little stressed that I'm not ovulating. Starting to get anxious, but I know that doesn't help anything.

Angsthase · 28/03/2006 12:41

Hi Ladies,

Hope you don't mind me joining in. I'm new to this game (the chat). Been ttc for 18 mths with no luck. 39 in 3 mths so clock is ticking like Big Ben.

About to start hormone treatment for IUI next week. Anyone ever tried it? Don't really know what to expect, but have decided to give up the demon drink to give it my best shot. Any tips??

Interested to read about EPO. What the difference between CM and EW? Do they come at the same time. (Bit of a novice here).

maisiemog · 28/03/2006 14:27

Hi there,
I've been reading the conception threads and thought I would introduce myself.
I am an older mum at 39 and have a 16 month old ds. We are thinking about the next baby, so I'm trying to find out a bit about what types of things I should be doing to ensure the optimum health for me and a new baby.
I am currently taking cod liver oil, partially because I am still bfing my ds and he will not take Cod LO from a spoon, so I am hoping he will get some effect through my milk. However I remember I couldn't take it when I was pg because of the high levels of vit A.
Does anyone know how on earth you are supposed to take fish oil without also taking vit A, are there fish oil supps without?
I suppose I should also switch to pregnacare multivits, as a regular multivit might have too high a level of vit a.

jabberwocky · 28/03/2006 15:47

Welcome aboard ladies!

Angsthase, egg white (ew) cervical mucous only comes when you are ovulating - about 24 hours, give or take. So you should notice a progressive increase in viscosity for 3 or 4 days leading up to ovulation. Evening primrose oil can help as can taking a certain type of cough syrup. there's a link about that below in one of my other posts.

Having said all of that, I am currently experiencing some anxiety about my cm situation this month. It never seemed to get to the ew stage. Sad I'm thinking of getting an Isis Scope if we're not successful this month. Someone started a thread on that this month and it sounds promising.

jabberwocky · 28/03/2006 15:48

maisiemog, I'm taking prenatal vitamins to make sure I get enough folic acid. Not really sure about vit A , but I do take a fish oil supplement daily as well. I'm pretty sure the only other thing it has is vit E but I will check on that.

Nicola63 · 29/03/2006 13:36

It is fish LIVER oil (and all liver products in fact) that should be avoided when pregnant (because of the specific form of Vit A in in) but fish oil (not from the liver) is OK.

Cristina7 · 29/03/2006 13:40

Angsthase - well done on giving up drinking, even if it wasn't a "problem".

maisiemog · 29/03/2006 19:28

AAAAAAH! Nicola63 (a lot of Nicolas on Mumsnet then Grin )
That sheds some light on the whole thing. I do have fish oil capsules, but had missed the blindingly obvious fact that they aren't liver oils. Grin
Is there a good site for basic info about all this having babies lark. I didn't really plan it last time, but I'd like to have a bit more control this time - I know I know!? Grin
Had to have a scan today and the wifey doing the scan said she could see my ovaries, she could tell by the follicles, she then had to explain what they were. It's all a bit gruesome, but I'll get used to it I suppose. Shock

Angsthase · 31/03/2006 09:16

Thanks for the info jabberwocky. Feel like I'm finally starting to learn what it's all about.

Thanks Cristina7 - giving up the booze isn't really a problem, just not looking forward to going out and being the only sober one!

Well, did a pregnancy test yesterday and it says I'm pregnant Smile. Tried not to get too exited. Last night I started some slightly(brown) spotting Sad. I looked it up on the net and it says that can be normal if not combined with abdominal pain. The thing is I have wierd "feelings" in my abdomen, but not pain. Could this be the beginning of the end? Trying not to worry, but never been pregnant before, so don't know if wierd feelings are normal. Anyone got any ideas what's going on?

Angsthase · 31/03/2006 09:33

Maisiemog - try www.babycentre.co.uk. That's where I got my info re the spotting. I'm sure there are others Smile.
