Holy mackerel batman ! Maths? Embryology? Psychology? Economics? I have an OU diploma and hated every second of it Blush

Particularly impressed with the textiles degree, Ninja - I am currently finishing sewing a summer dress and about to start a winter coat, now I know who to bug if I get stuck :o

PopcornMouse · 11/10/2011 09:12

Happy birthday Dizzy! :o

CakePigeon · 11/10/2011 09:15

Ooh scream you work in the city? How exciting! I'm just next door to you in lawyer land Grin for some of the time anyway, at the moment I'm in outer London which is -rubbish ok. My degree, predictably, is in law.

Who is next to test?! I have no idea... ninja is it you?

My chart is a total mess this month I have no idea why it's weird Sad don't think I have ov'd yet which is a shame yet more sex...

CakePigeon · 11/10/2011 09:16

Ooh yes dizzy happy birthday!!! Thanks

GenericDietCola · 11/10/2011 09:32

Happy birthday Dizzy!

Oh Ninja and Popcorn I am so impressed by your sewing abilities. I can make cushions and mend things but I'd love to be able to make clothes. I'm scared of sewing machines though!

I think Dizzy is testing soon - anyone else due to confirm soon?

Day 11 here, gynae appointment today but I think the ultrasound person told me everything really.

Biscuitsandtea · 11/10/2011 09:35

Yes yes yes, Happy Birthday Dizzy Thanks

Have a great day (and don't work too hard)

I used to work in the City for an accountancy firm but DH and I moved to the Midlands several years ago (and now I don't work at all)

Solars - I never really knew what I would use a maths degree for - it was just that I was good at maths Confused. I think I wanted to be an accountant but didn't really want to do an accountancy degree as then you might be a bit limited (and bored). However, I have several friends who were doing engineering degrees at the same time as I was doing maths and I can very clearly remember that we were basically covering the same material for a lot of the first year, it's just that they were learning how to apply it to something clever and we were learning how to prove it was true. There was a great deal of overlap I seem to recall. But I think you're right, unless you want to go into academia I don't know many people who actually use the content of a maths degree. I needed a degree to get my job and a maths degree ticked the box very nicely, but have never used it and certainly couldn't remember it now. I have a few friends who did Maths and Stats and then went into stats based jobs, or into being an actuary (which is pretty stats based). But it tends to be either stats or mechanics that you can use, not the pure stuff that I mainly did.

Biscuitsandtea · 11/10/2011 09:36

Oooh, good luck with the gynae Generic - hopefully it is mostly stuff you already know but still be nice to get the gynae's take on it all and any steps planned that might need to be taken (or even better, no steps required because it so much nothing to worry about).

farfallarocks · 11/10/2011 09:50

Best of luck generic!

scream I am also in the City but did a philodophy degree!

I feel like a pin cushion today ladies, have had about 9 vials of blood taken this morning and more to come on Thursday. I was in and out in about 2 mins.
DH was taking ages and after about 5 mins the nurse popped out and said to me 'oh you can go in now' DH, lying in the chair with wet towels all over his face and white as a sheet. He had fainted! Poor lamb, he is sooo squemish and funny about blood I am obviously going ot have to have an emergency stand in birth partner when I do get preggers, clearly!

farfallarocks · 11/10/2011 09:50

philosophy even

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 11/10/2011 10:11

Ooooo lots of company! Yay! Farfalla I'm very intrigued as to what you do in the city with a philosophy degree!

I feel your pain over the pin cushion status! I also had an obscene amount of blood taken last week, I think it was 7 dials. When I saw all the blood sloshing around I nearly ended up like your DH! Think there's any chance I can get an emergency stand in for ME when I go into labour?!?!

Happy Birthday Dizzy! I'm sorry I didn't say that first thing this morn. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Cake yay for more city workers! You lawyers work HARD though! Hopefully you might have better hours in outer London? Perhaps an easier commute as well? Or is that too much to ask for?!?!

Good luck with your appt today Generic! hope you get some good news!

Solars · 11/10/2011 10:14

Generic good luck with the Gynae appointment

Oh no poor Farfalla's DH, and you had 9 vials taken! I always look away when my bloods are taken! When do you get all your results back? by the way impressed with your philosophy degree, what job do you use it for?

Fully awake now Biscuits after your talk on maths :) (It had the opposite effect on me!) Have to say I never liked the stats part as much as the applied/mechanics which is why I veered away from the maths degree for fear of becoming an actuary! But I did sadly like the pure part :( I would have loved to have gone into Architecture too but was never much of an artist and you needed some sort of art A level or AS level to get into that, I did the next best thing which was to end up in structural engineering so have managed to work with some great architects.

GenericDietCola · 11/10/2011 10:14

Oh dear Farfalla sounds traumatic! Hope your tests either show something simple and treatable or show nothing at all so you can be more confident in your next (imminent) pregnancy.

Biscuits and Solars I am in awe of your maths and engineering expertise! I did A level physics but struggled a bit with the maths.

farfallarocks · 11/10/2011 10:17

Must admit, most of the people I work with don't have economics degrees, my job is not particularly technical though, much more client facing!

Is anyone next to test? We are due a bfp soon!

Cake do you have a link to your chart? I am a chart-o-holic :o

BabySade · 11/10/2011 10:28

Morning everyone, I've missed so much! Been busy at work. Happy Birthday Dizzy hope you have a lovely day.

Thanks for the biology lesson, if only I had asked you ladies originally I would have saved days searching google for implantation bleeding, ovulation etc...
Wink

Im impressed with the vast array of knowledge on this thread. I have a degree in biochemistry (which I barely remember-I was too busy enjoying student life) and am a registered sick children's nurse. People are always asking my advice as I'm a nurse but my job is very specialised so am normally useless Blush

Ninja am jealous of your textile skills, would love to be able to make clothes etc..
Popcorn are you a craft wizard? I've seen you on some of the craft threads that I was perusing in the hope to find some ways to make homemade Xmas presents.

Have just booked DH sperm analysis, that's the most exciting news I have today as I'm on CD9. It's so tedious as I don't ovulate normally until day 20 ish.

BabySade · 11/10/2011 10:30

Just seen about the gynae appointment Generic good luck today

BabySade · 11/10/2011 10:32

Oops cross post Popcorn! do you have any advice on where to start in crafts for a total beginner who can't sew or knit?!

GenericDietCola · 11/10/2011 10:34

Oh Popcorn that sounds a lovely job! I feel like I'm good at crafts and enjoy doing them but I rarely get time. Like Baby I'd like to do some homemade Christmas presents and decorations this year so I'll have to check out the craft threads!

farfallarocks · 11/10/2011 10:35

solars and generic, some of the tests are pretty immediate.
The karotyping (chromosone tests) and blood clotting tests take 2/3 weeks I think. So in about 4 weeks we should have everything back and I hoping, a plan of action as we are on hols from the 19th nov and the timing would be perfect Wink

baby hope your DH is ok with the semen analysis. In the clinic this morning there was a couple sitting there and the nurse came out with a clipboard and said, Right Mr X, this way for the semen analysis. Poor chap, she could have been subtle about it!

farfallarocks · 11/10/2011 10:35

popcorn luckily I had an emergency satsuma in my bag which restored him nicely!

BabySade · 11/10/2011 10:44

I don't think it will be too bad. He gets to do it at home then we get an hour to get it to the hospital. Which is about a 20 minute drive away. We then take it straight to the lab. Still I don't think DH is relishing the task ahead. I do feel sorry for him Smile.

He's been told this morning that he has to supply a second sample 2 weeks later. Does anyone know why? The person I booked the appointment with didn't know

BabySade · 11/10/2011 10:46

I pressed send to quick. That's great that they should be back before you go on holiday Farfalla it's always good to have a plan Wink

dreamfeeder · 11/10/2011 10:47

farfalla, poor DH, love the emergency satsuma!

possiblemaybebaby · 11/10/2011 10:54

I missed you guys too much. I have been lurking and keeping up with you all. Congrats on BFPs and good scan news Generic

Happy birthday Dizzy hope you are being thoroughly spoilt.

DH and I haven't really stopped trying after all that talk. Took myself off to GP this morning as have been spotting for 16 days, so have been sent for day 3 bloods. Nicest GP ever. Am selfishly in need of some brooking though in the hope that the results come back ok Smile

How is everyone else? Positively blooming one hopes Smile
