Just found out you are pregnant after a previous miscarriage and too nervous to move over the to pregnancy boards? Freaking out about spotting, cramping, symptoms (or lack there of) and nervously awaiting your first scan? Here is a lovely place for lot's of support, hand holding and problem sharing.

Courtesy of owlbooty here are the Ten Commandments of the Freak Out Room.

  1. Thou shalt check thy knickers to the point of insanity until the baby actually arrives.
  2. Thou shalt also check the loo roll post-wipeage (sorry, gross, I know)
  3. Thou shalt bore thy physician and midwife to tears with the mentalling.
  4. And thy husband/boyfriend/family/neighbour's cat.
  5. Thou shalt obsess over the absence of symptoms.
  6. And the presence of symptoms.
  7. And the fluctuation of symptoms.
  8. Thou shalt pee on a vast number of sticks and keep ClearBlue and First Response in business.
  9. The day before any scan extreme mentalling is permitted without recourse to the Haddock.
10. Self-diagnosis with Dr Google is Forbidden.

The Haddock will be applied liberally to all transgressors.

kat i have no idea - any advice?

KatAndKit · 12/10/2011 18:27

hmm according to internet it seems not, seems scans usually done are early dating that you've already had (do they need to know that?), anomaly scan, and a late third trimester scan.
If you can get away with not telling your french doctor about your scan in England then perhaps you can blag another one?

googietheegg · 12/10/2011 20:51

Oh ffs, had another tiny spot of blood when I went to the loo a couple of hours ago. Nothing since but obviously metalling.

When it happened last week I asked the doctor what to do if the same thing happened again and she said as long as there were no cramps then not to worry. I don't have any cramps and my boobs are still sore, but obv I'm going crazy here.

How likely is another miscarriage after having the heartbeat and a healthy scan at 8+2? google is driving me mental. Am 9 weeks today.

LadyMaybe · 12/10/2011 21:44

Googie it's really low, if this were your first pregnancy it would be about 5%, and having one previous miscarriage only increases your risk by about 3 percentage points from the start (according to some sources, some say it's exactly the same as if you'd had none), so you could estimate it at being 5-8% - or a 92% percent chance of this continuing.

googietheegg · 12/10/2011 21:50

lady thank you so much for replying. Good this is such a rollercoaster!! I think I'll try and get a gyne apt tomorrow and see if I can have another scan.

googietheegg · 12/10/2011 21:50

I mean 'god' not 'good' - not good at all!

LadyMaybe · 12/10/2011 22:07

I think it's a good idea, and maybe you could ask him/her about screening for down syndrome and other trisomies then? Maybe they only do it with the second trimester blood tests? But if it's something that you want done, best to know in advance what your options are.

I've got an appointment with my GP tomorrow to get b12 stuff looked at. I think actually the injection might be ok (having googled far too much), and if that's the case, would like it as I've been taking a b12 oral supplement since BFP and it's obviously not being absorbed if my levels are dipping so quickly.

googietheegg · 13/10/2011 06:53

Good luck with the b12 apt today lady

I've woken up to no more blood and boobs still sore so trying to be positive but it's very hard!

How's everyone today?

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 07:05

Morning all,

Googie, somehow I missed your post last night - I'm so sorry. As Lady says though, once you've seen the heartbeat your chance of mc does drop significantly. I hope you can get a gynae appointment for some reassurance but the fact that it was only 1 drop last night, and that there is no cramping etc, and boobs are still sore this morning is certainly promising I think. We all know that light bleeding can be no problem at all, but nothing reassures like a gynae or scan. Do let us know how you get on with your gynae and take care xxx

Lady good luck with your appt today - keeping everything crossed for you. How many weeks are you now?

Hope everyone else is ok xxx

stitchinline · 13/10/2011 10:06

scarlet sorry I x-posted yesterday ? so pleased the scan was a good one

googie how stressful, glad there was no more this morning and hope you can get it checked out

Freaking out here as have woken with a sharp pain running down one side of bump to underneath, agony when I move about. I wish there was something in your body that sent a message to your brain to say ? this is normal pain or this is bad pain so get it checked out. Would save lots of unnecessary worry!

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 12:15

Oh Stitch you poor thing. Could you call your midwife and see what she says? It's ridiculous the amount of different sorts of pains you can get when pg without ever knowing if they're 'ok' or not. Hope it either subsides or you can talk to someone about it xx

scarletfingernail · 13/10/2011 12:30

Hi stitch I second giving the MW a call.

It's more than likely ligaments, but best to get some reassurance.

shellshock7 · 13/10/2011 13:12

Excellent scan news scarlett Grin

So sorry you are going through this googie, hope you get a reassurance scan soon

stitch my mum has knitted me a blanket and finished it at the weekend, it's lovely but I couldn't get excited about it as still mentalling about the scan on Monday...I so hope this gloom lifts if the scan is 100% positive!

Re your pains stitch I have had pains for probably a couple of weeks now, mostly bearable but sometimes agony...its so bad if there is no one around I hold my bump when I walk, and I always have to hold it when getting up, opening a door, rolling over etc. I asked about it a while ago and I think it is just 'one of them things', not much reassurance I know. I'm still finding HB with doppler and have progressed from flutters to soft kicks which says to me it must be ok...hope this rests your mind a little bit?

LAF77 · 13/10/2011 13:15

stitch I've had a similar feeling over the last few days, not sharp enough to take my breath away, but definitely noticeable. Sometimes it is gas and other times, it isn't. Hope you can get some reassurance soon. If there hasn't been any bleeding, it has to be a good sign.

OP posts:
stitchinline · 13/10/2011 13:31

Thanks guys - it settled down but going out at lunch has made it flare up. If it persists I will call the mw. Did get hb this am with Doppler and no bleeding so not massively worried. Just have that niggly concern. Especially as last time I ignored symptoms I ended up in ambulance and spending 3 nights in icu. So probably tend to be a bit paranoid at everything.

shellshock7 · 13/10/2011 13:39

stitch then just ring the MW now, it is worth it for peace of mind...and the amount of times I have read about how MWs would rather have the phone call and be able to tell you nothing is wrong than you waiting at home for it to get worse before phoning?

digitalgirl · 13/10/2011 13:59

scarlett excellent news on the scan!

googie sorry you had a bit of a scare last night, but glad it all seems to have tailed off today. I would say any sign of bleeding warrants getting another scan just for the reassurance - do you have to pay for them out there or can you get one on the French equivalent of the NHS? Congrats on getting to 9 weeks.

stitch it's probably 'stretching ligaments' but I'd say any pain that you'd describe as 'agony' is definitely worth a call to the MW and a quick burst on the doppler. As with Googie, if only for reassurance.

ladym good luck with the GP appt today.

My next appointment is with my private guy on the 7th November - which is 3 and half weeks away. I'm wondering if I could get a quick doppler visit from the MW in between when I'm 15 weeks - even though they don't normally schedule them for 2nd timers.

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 15:28

Stitch, Googie and Lady - hope you are all getting somewhere with your relelvant medical professionals today and are each getting some reassurance.

Digital - may I ask what you 'private guy' does? I don't mean that to sound as 'saucy' as it perhaps does.... HmmBlushWink. Do you not get a 16 week mw appt Digital? I wasn't sure if I would being a second timer but I seem to be getting the same appts as before this time around?

I've had my 16 week mw appt today which all went ok. There was a trainee mw there who took about 14 hours to find the heartbeat but did eventually get there. Heart rate was about 140 which she seemed to think was fine, although it sounded loads slower than I remember DS being - his was a proper galloping horse sound and this was more 'swooshy' (although not the noise they get from is it your pulse or the placenta or something?).

Anyway, I assume my BP was fine as they enver said anything, urine seemed to pass the test so all in all quite good. And I get another mw appt at 24 weeks. I thought I read somwehere that you got less appts second time around but I had still had 8 and 16 weeks and then will get 24 (with obv the 12 and 20 week scans in between) so still getting something every four weeks. And once I've been for the 20 week scan in November I get to see the consultant so will get to see what they want to do with me?

Hope everyone else is ok xxx

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 15:43

Oh, and I asked about the downs screening and why I just got 'low risk' instead of a number and the mw said it is just a hospital thing. Apparently, for our hospital anything more than 1:150 is low risk (or lower than 1:150, you know what i mean) but they don't give the number. But the other hospital she works at give out the numbers.

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 15:45

But she also said if I was bothered she could see if she could find out the number for me (I don't really think I want to know though to be honest!). If it's 1:151 I'd be more worried I think but not enough to do an amnio because of the risks so I'd probably just then be more worried all the way through. Even if it is 1:75,000, I could still be that 1.

But anyway, just thought I'd let you know what she said :)

litlady · 13/10/2011 15:55

Hello! I've had previous miscarriages and two ectopics. But also one healthy birth inbetween, daughter fast approaching 3. I had a positive result last week with a clear blue test (1-2 weeks) and followed up with a futher clear blue today (3+ weeks). The thing is I'm 43 and I am so petrified that it will happen again, don't know if I can face a trip to EPAU and am thinking it's till early so I can wait a couple of weeks so they are able to really see something. But also, so anxious maybe I should go sooner. Feel totally mental! Good to see everyone supporting each other here though.

googietheegg · 13/10/2011 16:00

Hi all. Still don't know WTF to do as no more blood, but the gyne is not open today so I'll have to ring in the morning and hope for an apt.

I just can't work out how I feel really, I think my boobs are still sore, although not always the same, and my tummy's been feeling a bit bubbly and slightly stitchy, but deffo no cramping.

I just don't feel like I can do anything and my husband's running round after me and I'm annoying myself with my lameness!!

Sorry for me, me, me post gals.

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 16:02

HBi Litlady.

Firstly, congratulations on your bfp :) Sorry to hear about your losses though :(

So if Clearblue says 3+ weeks that would put you 5 ish weeks? Do you have any dates from your last period to go on?

These early weeks are just so stressful - I never know how we actually get through them. I do think though that the longer you can wait to go to the EPAU the better as it can be just as stressful if they can't see much and you have to go back in anyway for them to see what is going on. I guess though with your history would you be wanting to check that it wasn't ectopic too?

Would iot perhaps be worth a trip to your GP to see what they say> Or even ringing the EPAU to see what they'd advise? They might also be able to tell you whether you can self refer or whether you'd need your GP to refer you?

Sorry if I'm telling you all stuff you already know Blush

You are most definitely in the right place though for lots of lovely support and handholding. I can't tell you what a help this thread has been to me (and I'm currently 16 weeks). xx

Biscuitsandtea · 13/10/2011 16:03

googie nothing to apologise for - we're all here for you. No cramping is a good good sign - I think you'll just have to get on the phone to that gynae in the morning and get yourself an appointment. Glad DH is being helpful though and looking after you.

Do take care of yourself and keep resting xx

litlady · 13/10/2011 16:41

Hello, maybe it would be good to call the GP but I'm going to leave it one more week. Stupidly, I'm not sure when my last period was, although I remember it was first week of September I think. Anyway, very glad to have found you all.Good luck googietheeggx
