Oops I ate quite a bit of papaya on friday night. I never heard of that one before. Google seems to think if it's ripe you're ok. Just have top hope now....

MummyAbroad · 08/03/2011 16:47

Katherine my boobs dont hurt when prodded but feel sore if I jump and they fall heavily.
Is there anyway you can pay private for an HCG test? I have found it really reassuring and its helping me keep calm until I am far enough along to be worth scanning.

Hils you need a blood test (quantitive HCG) to get your levels checked. Your GP might do one if they suspect you are having problems (possible ectopic for example) but otherwise its not standard, lots of info here

MummyAbroad · 08/03/2011 16:55

tony dont worry about the papaya, its part of the national diet over here in Costa Rica and the women here are very very fertile!! Ripe papaya is absolutely fine, and even unripe papaya must be consumed in very large quantities in order to act as a uterine stimulant. There is a study here that shows that ripe papaya had no effect on uterus of rats (the concentrated extract (latex) did cause contractions) - so dont worry!

katherine2008 · 08/03/2011 16:56

MummyA am deffo going to book an early scan - can you tell me any more about an HCG test? Sorry for ignorance. I looked at the link for Hils - but can't make sense of it. (rues expensive education). Anyone seen digi?

digitalgirl · 08/03/2011 16:59

This isnt the post i wanted to type, but here goes. Missed miscarriage, baby measures 8 weeks. But no heartbeat. Erpc on Thursday as it means they can test for genetic problems. DH and i are utterly utterly heartbroken.

As this is my fourth in a row I have absolutely no idea where to go from here...

owlbooty · 08/03/2011 17:00

AandR papaya is most certainly not on my 'no' list! I'm going off the NHS list and studiously ignoring all the other crap on t'internet Grin

digi sending you much love - I am so very sorry for what you are going through Sad

MummyAbroad · 08/03/2011 17:08

Katherine sure, HCG is the hormone your body produces during pregnancy. Its the same one home pregnancy tests look for. The quantitive HCG blood test tells you exactly how much HCG there is. Here are my results:

12DPO = 59.1
15DPO - 117.6
25DPO = 8211

When you are very early on in pregnancy, the HCG doubles approx every two days, after it reaches 6000 it takes longer to double. If you see the numbers double, you can be assured that the pregnancy is very unlikely to be a) ectopic - the number would rise slowly or b) molar pregnancy - the numbers would be very high. Large numbers can also be an indicator of twins. If the numbers dont rise correctly this would also indicate mc.

It doesnt really offer you any more information than this, but I found it reassuring to know the numbers were doing what they were supposed to, and I have just recently found out that it can help me work out when to get scanned. Now that my numbers are over 8000 I am more likely to see a heartbeat. I should add that a blood test over here only costs me £15 (actually yesterday the gave me a discount for frequent use and it was only £12!) so thats why I have been doing lots. I have no idea how much it would costs to do privately in the UK, anyone had one done privately over there?

Re boobs - I don't remember getting sore boobs when pregnant with DS (or the ectopic or the MMC) but with this one I've had porn star nipples for the last 4 weeks. DH thinks it's v. fun but has to be reminded that they're V. SENSITIVE...

Blooming work have invited me to a working dinner tonight - bet there won't be pancakes :(

KnitterNotTwitter · 08/03/2011 17:21

digi so sorry about your sad news. Sending you both love and hugs; and hoping that the doctors come up with some answers and solutions. Will be thinking of you on Thurs.

tonythetyger · 08/03/2011 17:48

Digi - so sorry to hear your news. Are you in London? If so see if you can get referred to Lesley Regan's clinic at St Mary's for recurrent miscarriages. It's meant to be one of the best for this. Barrenbrook has just been referred there.
