Most people’s nans are not like her. I didn’t connect with it because it’s not the kind of family I was brought up with.
I liked the long wait one because it was unexpected.
I suppose they are not going for the working classes though are they , it’s more of a middle class ad.
The Tesco one with the two women is far more down to earth and even that is a bit odd.

WorthyOpalZebra · Today 09:33

It didn't work for me. What did it have to do with JL? It didn't show her in the actual store at all, it didn't show anything about the spirit of Christmas beyond buying for the sake of spending money.

It's just lazy writing - they've stooped to stereotyping grandmas as clueless old ladies, children as ungrateful brats and millennial parents as weak and spineless.

JasmineMac · Today 09:34

I've just realised it's Paul Whitehouse voicing Pickles! I love Paul Whitehouse, so that's endeared the ad to me a wee bit 😂

Thanksforyourlackofthought · Today 09:39

Just saw it. All I saw was greedy kids who perked up once they saw a room full of stuff.

VanquishedColston · Today 09:39

DollopOfFun · Today 07:07

My fave was the 2011 one, The Long Wait ❤

Same! That was by far the best. Great sentiment, and unexpected.

I feel like they just can't recapture the magic anymore, the last few efforts have not been great.

Improved after Gramdma left those shitty badly behaved kids behind and went on a shopping trip. Ending would be much improved if it was Grandma surrounded by lovely things she had bought herself from John Lewis, with the kids locked outside in the cold.

Perfect

ShatterPersistent · Today 09:42

God that was boring... and pointless.

the80sweregreat · Today 09:46

I suppose a few ‘ trust fund ‘ children have Nans like this. In a few years time they will be itching to get their hands on her assets and that house.

There will never be any JL ad better than Monty the Penguin for me😍
Not impressed at all with this, utter brats, pathetic parents & what's the message? Spend more money to create so called 'magic'. Not for me I'm afraid but I'm fed up with the whole Christmas ads thing anyway!

I just found that Monty ad to re-watch and oh my days... 🥺🥺🐧🐧 just the music has given me goosebumps, and that boy is just the sweetest!
I think the sentiment works best in adverts like those, focusing on children learning to give to make OTHERS happy, rather than having unrealistic expectations solely for themselves.

Saying that, my DD8 would adore Pickles! Anyone know if you can still buy them new, or only as "vintage" on eBay, etc?

Mansionscoldandgrey · Today 09:53

For a proper nostalgia trip, she should have locked the little brats up

John Lewis Christmas Ad is here
CloudySoul · Today 09:54

I don't get what she ended up giving them. A gaudily decorated room? They won't be able to take that home with them, will they? Bring back Monty the Penguin, the best Christmas ad ever.

Sartre · Today 09:56

SliceOfMammasPeachPie · Today 08:06

Tesco's is pretty bad as well.

Now I quite like Tesco’s. It’s totally unrealistic but I enjoyed watching it all the same.

bardabunga · Today 09:59

Not keen on that ad at all. Basically telling you to keep on splashing endless cash on ungrateful brats and eventually you'll hit upon something they might like. Don't go spending all their inheritance though...

My favourite was the accident-prone dragon.

LeedsLoiner · Today 10:00

rainbowstardrops · Today 09:24

Why on earth are JL promoting bratty children and wet lettuce parents? Baffling.

John Lewis's customer base ?

Yamyamabroad · Today 10:00

Nowhere near their best and I'm struggling to understand the marketing aims here. Having said that, I loved KST's house and it was quite atmospheric.

Agree, a tie in with Slow Horses would have absolutely elevated it to top 3 adverts ever. Sometimes its the teeniest of things that stay with you, like when Endeavour meets Morse's eyes in the rear view mirror. Lamb driving the Tuktuk would have slain it.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · Today 10:00

Ugh. Horrible kids - the result of gentle parenting. The dog was cute though. It's a no from me.

Tiddlywinkly · Today 10:02

It's not the best.

My favourite is still The Long Wait.

Whoops75 · Today 10:02

I really liked it.

The dog reminded her that gifts make memories and cash doesn’t.
I am having a very Revolut Christmas this year due to family ages and locations. I’m very nostalgic for the years of buying, wrapping and being connected.

You could make a half decent disco room for £20 bah humbug.

MadameEtourdie · Today 10:03

It’s awful.
Impolite, unruly children who don’t show any affection to grandma until she buys them something!
Hardly the spirit of Christmas.
I usually buy Christmas presents from JL but I won’t bother this year.
I hope they really consider the true meaning of Christmas in time for their next Christmas Ad, and I don’t mean an overtly Christian approach.
Christmas for me, is about sharing the gift of love, and that can’t be bought or sold.

Onedaythiswillbeover · Today 10:03

Slow clap for JL and the Most Tone Deaf Ad of the Year.

Pansykavalier · Today 10:04

Totally sterile. Ersatz emotions. Actors going through the motions…

🤮

rainbowstardrops · Today 10:05

LeedsLoiner · Today 10:00

John Lewis's customer base ?

Hahaha! Quite possibly!

Pingsung · Today 10:06

That is so awful. Is that the standard of behaviour we hold children to now. Destroy a room if bored Only be affectionate if you are bought presents. Horrible

Raahh · Today 10:06

I liked last year's - the constant sitting around with headphones/ear buds in is totally realistic (and that's just dh).

Then, they do something to surprise you (like buy you sugared almonds because you'd been complaining saying they don't sell the 'nice' ones anywhere, and even though they made your filling fall out, it was still a lovely gesture, and showed someone was listening...Grin).

The dentist was expensive though. Grin.

Whosthetabbynow · Today 10:11

MyballsareSandy2015 · Today 06:28

I’d be embarrassed if those kids were mine … too big to be charging about bored, they aren’t toddlers. And then holding the card up, looking for money 😳

Yes. It’s awful. Greed is good vibes.
