Please cheer me up with all the wonderful things to look forward to in Autumn.
I have had enough of heatwave after heatwave. Especially as a dog owner. Ive just stuck on Gilmore Girls as a means of escape!

So please join me here if you can't wait for Autumn and share any of your Autumn joys!

Put it in the Christmas section in the hope of finding my kinda people! I

it draws in at different rates. So a few seconds at first then it gradually increases until it is 4 mins plus a night. Then it levels off and then after the longest day it does it all in reverse ( which i hate).
If you go on the website time and date you.can track.exact times for wherever you live. It really cheers me up tracking the day getting shorter on there.

Wow! I never knew it worked like that!!
I used to have a diary that gave you ‘lighting up’ times which seemed to be around 2 minutes each night ( maybe from John Menzies or WHSmiths?) but we also did a project on it at school.
Jeez! all those years I was getting it wrong!😖

QuokkaCutie · 07/08/2026 20:23

To add… it is really getting darker by over 3 mins a night?
When I was at school (many years ago ) I’m sure we were told it was 2 mins a night, so around 15 mins a week. I could, of course, be mis-remembering!😄

Daylight shortens by about 13 mins a week after the summer solstice and after the winter solstice it lengthens by 14 to 20 minutes a week. People just don’t notice for much of the time.

Yes, it works out at roughly 2 minutes per morning and evening on average. The shortest and longest days tend to actually last for a week or so, but the average at this time of year is about 2 / 2.5 minutes difference between both sunrises and sunsets each day, depending on where you live.

I live by the beach and go every day, so my life revolves around time and tide.

I was just surprised at how @flapjackfairy described it! More detailed than I imagined.
When I lived ‘down home’ (about 100 miles south from where I live now) I was much more aware of nature and seasons thanks to my DDad who knew such a lot about trees, wildlife etc. It was a very “green” county so surrounded by nature in its unspoilt glory. Sadly, I have the sea surrounding here, but far less greenery. DP, though very lovely man is a real city boy with no knowledge or interest in nature. Luckily my bestie is like me!

Another annual moment: when The White Company launch their autumn fragrance range! It's such a "aaaaand relax!" moment for me.

Plus, I heard a skein of Canada geese flying over early this morning. Also a sign that autumn is on its way.

Bryonyberries · 07/08/2026 23:08

If you go on the ‘Time and date’ webpage and look at the sun and moon part for your area it gives you all the exact times of sunrise, sunset and how much it changes each day. We are currently in one of the faster parts of the cycle and it goes up to 4mins a day change (both for getting darker or lighter). It is pretty interesting. We only get true night after 25th July after summer solstice, before that it is twilight.

I should have said that it is split between morn and evening of course so the overall daylight is 4 mins less . By the end of August sunset will be 8pm approx so you really notice it then.

Bryonyberries · 07/08/2026 23:09

It has felt like the season has shifted a little this week despite the ongoing heat.

Yes, definitely. I put a trackie top on the other evening, which I haven’t got months, and I wear a t shirt to bed more now!

Edit ‘haven’t FOR months’

I want to watch A Discovery of Witches but not until I’ve finished the books.

May possibly do Game of Thrones again 😊

I also like series like All Creatures Great & Small at that time of year

Edited

Formatting always seems to go up the spout on MN.

I think I feel slightly differently about Autumn TV and Halloween. For Halloween, we love to watch A Haunting in Venice.

This is a canny article with a few good suggestions. Some really obvious ones and some I wouldn't touch with a bargepole, but liking the idea of Good Will Hunting, A Few Good Men, Penelope, and Little Women. I also feel like finding old Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons for some reason.

Currently watching the new season of My Life with the Walter boys which often has autumn / fall themed episodes.

I meant to mention When Harry met Sally.

Yeah, Dead Poet's Society is just depressing. I came out of the movies after seeing that feeling utterly miserable.

Good call about Vicar of Dibley and Jonathan Creek!

Sundown at 8.31pm. It’s inching closer. Hang in there 🍁

There’s a really old episode of Midsomer Murders, called Dark Autumn and some of the scenery in it is beautiful, very autumnal, you could say!🍁

QuokkaCutie · 10/08/2026 14:45

My recent update from The Range…

Rather lovely chubby pumpkin candles, in white ( I sooo want these!) and orange, loads more Halloween stuff in store now, they’re really going for it this year! Some lovely bits and bobs, I’m having to avoid the display, or the whole lot will be at my house.

Also… I saw Christmas stuff mainly on the ends of the aisles… early- even by my standards! They have cleared a big area and lights are decs being put on display!😱

Oo I used to love Midsummer Murders, I’m going to seek out this episode to watch when it first starts getting chilly! Thank you!

It’s quite a good episode, I don’t know where it was filmed but the scenery is beautiful!

I’ve just ordered an autumn centrepiece from George at Asda. I was hoping to have my house all ready on 1 Sept. If this weather carries on it’ll be nearer to 1 October ☹️

Sasha07 · 10/08/2026 20:07

Yep, this returning heat is definitely unwelcome 😒 off to have a look at George site now though!

My two new buys for this Autumn. I bought the garland to put on my front door as it was cheap (I'm always worried someone will take any decor I put on my front door... even though the neighbours have wreaths out all year round!) but I'm starting to like seeing it indoors. Will be putting it away for another few weeks though as having it out during the 'summer holidays' feels wrong 😅

But I'm in love with my little ghost cushion! He's such a happy chappy that he's allowed to stay out on show 😁
oh, I decided on a whim last week to buy the White Company, 'Autumn' candle... £35 🙈 hid all the packaging from DH as even I think that amount is absurd but I just love the scent so much... And it's beautiful to have out on show 🍂 🍁

Where are all the Autumn lovers?

Frumpitydoo · 12/08/2026 06:40

See i adore Autumn, but nowadays dread the cooler months as heating my home is so dear and i struggle to afford it. How do you not mind abut this/deal with this, or is money no object?
