I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

Your presence is more important than all those presents. Didnt need to go mad

Believe it or not but kids can have BOTH.

I was drowning in my mams time as are my kids... we always did the big Christmas too.

Its not an either or scenario... is that really what people need to tell themselves, that those of us who but more than necessaries and 1 present are never spending any time with our kids.

Poorer people tend to do bigger Christmases, its more of an 'event' as we don't just have money to drop at a whim all year round. That also translates to not sending kids off to after school clubs, childcare, holiday camp/trips or boarding school etc... because we can't afford it. Honestly my kids are if anything sick of my time lol.

ElderlyCat · 18/12/2025 21:18

DS9

stocking (we have quite small stocking!) - chocolate bars, mini goo jit zu, lego mini figure, squishmallow surprise bag, fidget spinner

Presents - lego set, switch game, tonie, mug, telescope and stargazing guide, Taylor Swift t shirt and hoodie.

DS8

stocking - exactly the same as DS9!

presents - lego set, mug, tonie, nerf gun and target, kpop hoodie, fortnite t shirt, squishmallow mini set, snow globe

DD8 (but has a learning disability)

stocking - chocolate, make up brush, cheap blusher and powder, chelsea doll, wicked compact mirror

presents - baby born walk along Emily(?) doll, kids digital camera, disney princess jumper and pjs, barbie, tonie, baby annabelle feeding chair, large mirror for her playing hairdressers.

FightNight · 18/12/2025 21:20

You are putting alcohol in your 14yo’s stocking?

Skimama123 · 18/12/2025 21:21

DD (age 7) is getting:

Switch 2
Ski boots
Walking boots (if they arrive in time!)
Wicked notebook
Mosaic sticker book
PJs
Oodie
Slippers
3 x books
Princess annual
Bath bombs
Lights to go around her mirror
Fleece jacket
Wooly hat
Socks
Science kit
Lego

Probably some other stuff I’ve forgotten. My attitude to Christmas is very much if you need anything in December it’s being wrapped and going under the tree! I may still get another toy, possibly something monster high related. PJs and Oodie are her Santa presents, she asked Santa for PJs - so shes got some fancy satin ones! In our house Santa brings one present (around £15-20).

She’s also getting the following from grandparents and other relatives:

Wicked Lego
Lamp
Kerplunk
More PJs
Barbie annual
Case for switch
Clothes

It's a quote from a beautiful Joni Mitchell song. What an unkind remark. Money doesn't necessarily buy fun.

It doesn't buy class either.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 18/12/2025 19:28

Its not crass, its buying DC what you know they will like! Theres a world of difference to a teenager between Nike (insert any other teen lusted after brand) and M&S (insert what you consider nice).

Ok

pinkksugarmouse · 18/12/2025 21:37

Bit different in my circumstances as DD is 23 and had her gifts several days ago due to being abroad over Christmas and some being useful for her holiday.

Mostly rat themed clothing from Etsy and Amazon as that's what she wanted.

So different to when I was buying 10ish presents plus stocking fillers.

XmasList · 18/12/2025 21:43

Just had to check that this is the Xmas board. Are we actually telling people off for talking about presents they’ve bought for their children for Xmas on the Xmas board? 🤣🤪 Next we won’t be able to talk about GCSEs on the secondary education board or how to cook tofu on the vegan board.

Seawolves · 18/12/2025 21:44

I thought I was doing quite well as, for the first time ever, I have managed to find something my little one will like. He's severely disabled, hasn't figured out how to use his hands much less play with toys and is blind into the bargain. He's 5 and this is the first year I have been excited about what I have bought him. He's nil by mouth so I can't even make up his lack of a pile with sweets and chocolate. He has one single present from me and I hope he likes it.

That's fantastic SeaWolves. I hope your little boy and your whole family have a lovely Christmas. 💖

ElderlyCat · 18/12/2025 21:50

@Seawolves You have done well! It’s so hard with children with disabilities and SEND! My DD (has Down syndrome) already has a million barbies and dolls but it’s all she likes and plays with so she has more for Christmas! One present he will love is perfect ❤️

canonlydoblue · 18/12/2025 21:56

I thought Santa brought a stocking or a sack, didn't realise people did both. We're more a stocking at the end of the bed and mum and dad presents under the tree family. I LOVE the idea of a table present, might add that in this year.

Outandabout43 · 18/12/2025 21:58

I start buying in September and wrap them up as I go along. Then I forget what I've got and its just as big as a suprise for me on Christmas day.

Got it in one!

Top tip for any young teenagers who will be needing/getting a mobile phone for the year anyway, take out a contract in December and every few years they will get a Christmas upgrade.

Always huge excitement in this house and makes a good table present (neat gift wrapping!!)

Oh this is a great tip! And I hope I remember it when LO is old enough for a phone. (Currently only 3 lol)

RessicaJabbit · 18/12/2025 22:47

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 18/12/2025 06:39

It’s a present you leave on a child’s bed.

Edited

LoudPlumDog · 18/12/2025 22:56

housethatbuiltme · 18/12/2025 14:56

Why? its pretty common and completely legal.

Depending on where asked in the UK studies have show 1/3 to 1/2 of kids drink alcohol buy age 14.

NHS study state 'kids who drink a few time per year' ranging from 10% at 11 years old to 57% at 15 year old with 60% of that been given by parents and drunk under supervision of parents and over 70% being drunk in the safety of their own home. There is negligible reports of hospitalization or medical health issues beyond feeling sick or throwing up.

I'm sure it varies by culture as obviously some people don't drink for religious reasons etc... but its certainly not 'uncommon' in the UK for a 14 year old kid to have a drink safely at home on Christmas day.

Really????

im absolutely flabbergasted and glad I don’t live in the UK.

Insane amount of presents perhaps you could donate 1 or 2 instead to a charity for children who don't receive any, there are plenty atm asking for 1 present for a deprived child.

OnARainyDay2012 · 18/12/2025 23:11

Dd is 5. We've got:
Something she wants: vet play set
Something she needs: a watch to learn how to tell the time
Something to wear: nee pajamas and slippers
Something to read: a new book

The slippers, Pj's and book are from us and the others from father Christmas. Father Christmas is also bringing some stocking fillers like a slinky, a pen, a mug, a sticker book and some chocolate coins.

This feels like a normal level of gifting in my family. Her birthday was in October and she was given sooo much from her classmates and family so she doesn't need or want lots of things now.

Edited to add: we also donated to a local toy run and to Crisis at Christmas.

Interesting that despite your huge wealth and wonderful life you have so much time to post on Mumsnet. Just shows money doesn't buy happiness I suppose. I'm poor so not much else to do.

You’re so right, I had never thought of that…🤔

You could also spend a few hours in soup kitchen @croy make up a toiletry bag for someone without shelter or volunteer at a food bank..

I mean maybe you already do these things, it’s quite presumptuous of me to expect that you don’t seeing as I don’t know you….

The amount of gifts is insane, but honestly I am more concerned buying underage kids alcohol.
