Has anyone taste tested either; Cook, M&S or Waitrose - or can recommend another one??
It is for Christmas Day desert for those that don’t like Christmas pudding

My teens 💕 the Morrisons the best one. I don't eat it but they really like it. We had one last week and it all got eaten and none wasted.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 22/12/2025 12:22

People don’t make their own because lots of people don’t bake so buying all the ingredients end up being more expensive than buying one ready done.

People may have never made one before even ‘just a Swiss roll’ and to make first attempt for Christmas is a hell of a gamble accounting for lack of skill, knowledge and Unpredictable ovens.

So then comes in the element of a test run. More time used, potential more expense to top up ingredients. Pots to wash/Messy kitchen.

That is why people gratefully just buy one ready made. If someone asks for a recipe fair enough but I don’t why people who breezily reply ‘just make one’ on Mumsnet haven’t thought of all the above?! It’s generally because the person lacks the inclination of all the arsing about making one involves.

(OP M&S good this year I thought - but I had it with double cream so may have missed any dry element of it).

We stopped buying Yule logs. I did buy some of the Aldi mini Yule logs from their fridge section this year though and they are amazing (if not a traditional Yule log)

Clefable · 22/12/2025 12:50

We are cracking open the Aldi one today. I also got a Cook roulade that was half price in freezer.

Clefable · 22/12/2025 12:51

Oh and I don’t make one cos I can’t be arsed.

Why don't people just make their own? Shop cake is never as nice as homemade! It's basically just a chocolate swiss roll jazzed up a bit to look festive. I always make the Mary Berry one- it is lush, and very easy! One year I added orange zest and it was so good 😊

Perhaps because they are working up and to including Christmas Eve, juggling children and elderly parents and also having a social life. I love cooking and baking, but have got the M&S £15 one in the fridge, just too much else to do this week. Made cake and pudding in October when there was more free time.

Starship74 · 22/12/2025 15:44

I bought the M&S belgian chocolate one last week for £8, not bad.

Saw the Aldi one this morning and couldn't believe it was £10! Bought two packs of profiteroles instead for almost half the cost.

goudacheese · 22/12/2025 15:48

I'm making the Nigella one but now wondering if I should have made Mary Berry's.

13RidgmontRoad · 22/12/2025 16:01

Just jumping in to ask for recommendations if I want a fudgier / more sugary Yule log. I've got a Sains TTD one but I want "lower end and sugary" rather than the full m&s works. I had a brilliant one a few years ago, possibly from Asda but I've slightly drawn a blank.

suburburban · 22/12/2025 16:03

I’ve made one but it was very squidgy. I filled it with cream and cherries in kirsche then chocolate ganache on top. Now in freezer

I felt a bit meh about last year’s M&S effort (we ate two just to be sure 🤨) so this year I bought the Sainsbury’s taste the difference version. First slice had enough buttercream to inspire T1 diabetes so that went in the food bin - the following slices have been lovely.

Incredibly ignorant and insulting comment. T1 diabetes is an auto immune condition and not diet related at all. Educate yourself rather than casting aspersions on children like mine who face a daily battle with this disease.
(it really grates on me and the diabetic community when people are so ignorant)

Fairydusthello · 22/12/2025 17:15

Coop was lovely I thought.

Silverbirchleaf · 22/12/2025 20:23

Not quite a Yule log, but had the Arctic Colin the caterpillar frozen dessert today, and it was really nice.

Yup to most of that - plus battling the bastard flu.

Maybe one day I'll make my own Yule log... not this year!

PaperMachePanda · 22/12/2025 20:42

Just had the Lidl one and it was as dry as arseholes. Will be nipping out tomorrow and getting one from Tesco. Their Finest one is the best I think.

Clefable · 22/12/2025 20:43

The specially selected or whatever it’s called Aldi one is very nice.

Oh no, I just bought the lidl one today!

I managed to make mine last week, it’s as if my body knew I was going to come down with a virus

I was honestly shocked. Can't remember the price but it was over a fiver.

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 22/12/2025 22:06

Ooh we have the number 1 Asda one. Looking forward to it now!

Greentrilby · 22/12/2025 22:19

The Asda Exceptional one is gorgeous! Had one this weekend for DHs birthday and it went down a treat.

Snowinsummer · 22/12/2025 22:20

I tried Tesco Finest Yule log. I found it disappointing- dry & too sweet.

SSRI · 22/12/2025 22:25

I bought the M and S ‘best ever’ one from the fridge in store this wk - it does look suspiciously caramelly which I won’t like. Not cracking it open til Xmas day but will report back.

mynameiscalypso · 22/12/2025 22:25

We have the M&S gluten free one for Boxing Day. I’m expecting it to be quite dry so I’ve got ice cream, boozy chocolate cream and caramel sauce to have with it.
