Has anyone taste tested either; Cook, M&S or Waitrose - or can recommend another one??
It is for Christmas Day desert for those that don’t like Christmas pudding

Best yule logs for Christmas 2025, tried and tested

EleanorReally · 09/12/2025 06:43

the delia smith recipe with Chestnut puree cannot be beaten imo

Jumperorcardi · 09/12/2025 08:56

@EleanorReally is the delia recipe difficult to make? And have you ever made it in advance and frozen it? Thanks

Waitrose ones always seem slightly dry in my experience. Last year, M&S were the best ones I tried.

guilty as not made it but family members have and made in advance also

I read that article in good housekeeping and I don’t think there was even one item from Marks & Spencer in any of the tasting categories. I may be wrong but I don’t think so - will check later (just to be pedantic 😉)
If I’m right, why would that be?
M & S Yule Log is gorgeous

PlanetSaturn · 10/12/2025 11:32

I bought the M&S Christmas Colin last year. If that counts as a Yule log, it was dry, over sweet and mega disappointing. Mary Berry has a very very easy recipe that I’ve used every other year and it’s waaay better.

HamSandwichKiller · 10/12/2025 12:30

I felt a bit meh about last year’s M&S effort (we ate two just to be sure 🤨) so this year I bought the Sainsbury’s taste the difference version. First slice had enough buttercream to inspire T1 diabetes so that went in the food bin - the following slices have been lovely.

clinellwipe · 13/12/2025 20:40

Haven’t tried this year but previously I’ve found M&S Yule log sponge to be really dry just like their dry Colin ! I don’t get the Colin hype at all

Jumperorcardi · 21/12/2025 20:45

I have bought one from Cook, I will report back …..

We've just started Asda's luxury one which is nice, it has a dark chocolate ganache coating so it's a bit less sweet than the milk chocolate ones. Sponge is nice too, not dry.

Goldpanther · 21/12/2025 20:50

I've got the m&s vest ever one and it's salty?! Does say white chocolate and caramel buttercream, not salted caramel.

SatsumaCandlesCloves · 21/12/2025 21:05

@HamSandwichKiller are you taking about m and s 15 pounds one ? With fresh cream ?

I've just brought one

HamSandwichKiller · 21/12/2025 21:34

@SatsumaCandlesClovesnope it was their more basic one. Am picking up the £15
one with my Christmas order on Tuesday.
Can’t wait 😋

I agree. Much to sweet.

I’ve the frozen Colin thus year. Wonder how that will fare.

It's the easiest cake you can make. If you have an hour to spare why spend a fortune to buy one? It's just a Swiss roll. Unless you are snowed under driving an ambulance etc in which case just buy one

Silverbirchleaf · 21/12/2025 21:37

The Morrisons Best chocolate fudge is too sweet for me. I prefer the cheaper one (three pound) out of the two.

sakura06 · 21/12/2025 21:47

I really like the Morrisons one! The M&S one has too much ganache for my liking.

Sesma · 21/12/2025 22:06

We have frozen Colin this year from M&S rather than a Yule log,

SatsumaCandlesCloves · 21/12/2025 22:45

@HamSandwichKiller thank goodness for that because it's taken me years to get the 15 one !

Happilyobtuse · 21/12/2025 23:42

Hi, we bought Waitrose and it is ok. I really liked the Co-op one last year but I haven’t managed to get my hands on it this year. I recommend Co-op.

becca2405 · 22/12/2025 00:02

Why don't people just make their own? Shop cake is never as nice as homemade! It's basically just a chocolate swiss roll jazzed up a bit to look festive. I always make the Mary Berry one- it is lush, and very easy! One year I added orange zest and it was so good 😊

Crispynoodle · 22/12/2025 00:06

Dunno about Yule logs but M&S do the best chocolate cake (the normal one) I’ve become addicted to it and have it with strawberries
