I'm looking for some inspo for Christmas present for my DM. I usually just stick to boxes of chocolates or gift cards, but I'm looking for something more personalized and something she would actually find useful. I found this article on the Guardian website which lists 64 gift ideas for mums. https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/dec/03/best-christmas-gifts-mum-uk

If you could pick one or two items from those mentioned, which do you think you would be happiest to receive? Or do you think everything on it is just overpriced tat?

The best UK Christmas gifts for mums: 64 thoughtful ideas they’ll love

Forget aprons and baking trays: these tried-and-tested gifts – from a lime squeezer for margaritas to a bare root rose – hit the spot for mothers

Bedsocks, hot water bottle and book subscription please.

I would NOT appreciate any of the other gifts.

Out of interest-what would you like?

elQuintoConyo · 06/12/2025 08:53

A fucking FLANNEL?

PermanentTemporary · 06/12/2025 09:23

I feel like the makeup choices aren’t ideal but I barely wear any so I’m no help there. Glitter eyeshadow, however subtle, isn’t friendly to my eyes at this age.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/12/2025 09:30

@CurlewKate apart from those things?

I usually make a list of things for people to choose from. This year this included:
Bedsocks (I know my stepdaughter is getting me these because we had a long conversation about the sort of thing I wanted - bless her)
Books - I prepared a list of specific titles and the type of genre I prefer
Jewellery - I know there was some jewellery on the list but I specified the kind of things I liked - I did NOT like any of the things on the list!
An electric hot water bottle
A microfiber towel - extra large - to take swimming
A velvet top - I gave examples of what I like
A foot/leg exerciser thing (DH is getting me that).
Evergreen shrubs for the garden
Fruit bushes for the garden
A refill of the specific L'Occitane bath bubbles I like - I'm very sensitive to smells so I only want this particular one

I will, of course, be very grateful for anything I am given, but that doesn't mean I will actually like it. In my defence, I am autistic so if something isn't 'right' I am unlikely to use or enjoy it.

Very funny to me that for every single thing someone's outraged about, there's someone else saying they'd be delighted with it 🤣

There's plenty of stuff on there I'd like. I mean, it's a gift guide...its primary purpose is to flog stuff (and make commission for the Guardian), and of course not everything on there is going to appeal to all mums. That would be a magical gift guide indeed!

I would personally love the idea of that golden candy tin for my xanax 😆

Three months on...'AIBU? My child ate some of MIL's medication that she kept on the mantlepiece in a tin shaped like a boiled sweet, so we were bluelighted to the ED and DC had their stomach pumped. I think she's insane and should never be allowed near my child ever again'.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/12/2025 17:49

I'm 61. I'd like the cinema subscription. None of the other stuff, though. Certainly no bloody wool/cashmere/alpaca as I'm allergic.

thecatneuterer · 06/12/2025 18:25

Tank bra, cashmere triangle scarf, rose, air tag and Kohl liner. Thanks very much.

Denim4ever · 15/12/2025 22:52

The Guardian has been trying to get people to gift a tin of sardines for several years. Definitely a non starter even fir a foodie.

The idea of a wash cloth/face cloth/flannel is the pits. Worse than oven gloves or a tea towel. Just imagine if they apply the sardine tin approach in this area ... one could be the 'lucky' recipient of some toothpaste.

I don't mind the lime squeezer but praps it's best suited to a themed gift including other cocktail/cooking stuff

Are there any takes for the wash cloth in
boring stripes as well as being a tiny towel or the tinned sardines?

Yes 🙂

Yes 🙂

But surely only as part of a bigger gift probably themed

Well once I don't know, because the posters in question didn't give those qualifiers...but it's a gift guide, it's meant to be used at the discretion of the buyer, surely?! I guess people need to make a judgement call on whether a posh flannel alone is an adequate gift for their Mum, but that's not a problem the Guardian can solve!

Ultra strange reply.

Because no one else is discussing it in the manner you introduced

Christ alive. I'll probably regret this but what is "the manner I introduced"?

happytobemrsg · 16/12/2025 14:41

I actually like quite a lot of that 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’d love the socks, evergreen plant in pot, green stripe hair clip, gloves/wrist warmers…
