I'm looking for some inspo for Christmas present for my DM. I usually just stick to boxes of chocolates or gift cards, but I'm looking for something more personalized and something she would actually find useful. I found this article on the Guardian website which lists 64 gift ideas for mums. https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/dec/03/best-christmas-gifts-mum-uk

If you could pick one or two items from those mentioned, which do you think you would be happiest to receive? Or do you think everything on it is just overpriced tat?

The best UK Christmas gifts for mums: 64 thoughtful ideas they’ll love

Forget aprons and baking trays: these tried-and-tested gifts – from a lime squeezer for margaritas to a bare root rose – hit the spot for mothers

If someone bought me a lime squeezer I would want to know why they hated me !

EllaPaella · 05/12/2025 08:00

I’d be happy with the Toast vase or the rose (although is it the right time of year to plant a rose? No idea as I’m not a gardener). The fingerless gloves are lovely but I wouldn’t want anyone paying £75 for them!!
merino wool socks are always a nice treat. Nothing else on there appeals.

Mum is a very broad term. I'm a mum, my DIL is a mum, my friend has a mum in her 90's. I'm in my 60's, DIL is in her twenties. I think you're better going by specific interests than 'you're a mum, here, knit your own beanie' (more than DIL and 90 year old could cope with but I'd probably have a go).

EllaPaella · 05/12/2025 08:00

Oh yes the Neals Yard face cream would be very welcome but they actually do a balm which is much nicer.

User564523412 · 05/12/2025 08:02

I would personally love the idea of that golden candy tin for my xanax 😆

user2848502016 · 05/12/2025 08:07

I’d take the socks, hand cream or champagne
Most of the other things I wouldn’t use or aren’t to my taste

JennyForeigner · 05/12/2025 08:12

Can't remember if it was this one, but one of the guardian gift guides this year recommends some fancy Cornish deli... On the same day they ran an article on how the fancy Cornish deli tried to trademark a common cookery term in multiple cultures, and sue an up and coming cookery author.

Great ethics grauniad!

iSage · 05/12/2025 08:15

There's nothing in that list I'd particularly want. Mind you, I'm not a mum 😆

MiddleAgedDread · 05/12/2025 08:17

I’d use the hot water bottle and eye mask but wouldn’t say I need it. Same with the boxer shorts PJs.
dont wear wool so half the clothing is out and £35 for a scrunchie!!
champagne would be nice :)

At six quid a tin, you'd want the Air Tag to make sure no bugger takes them out of the cupboard and gives them to the bloody cat, wouldn't you?

😂😂

750ml · 05/12/2025 08:18

I saw this and apart from the socks, there is nothing on there I'd want.

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/12/2025 08:31

I’m 59, I haven’t clicked, I am grateful to people who have listed.

Champagne only really.

I do like cooking but have a huge store already and have my preferred brands of olive oil.

It’s all a bit comfy, stuff to look at and your hobbies are pottering round the house because you have tits.

The best surprise gifts I have ever received were a Swiss Army knife, cashmere socks, headphones, i pad case.

WildCherryBlossom · 05/12/2025 08:46

The book subscription would really annoy me. One of the great pleasures in life is browsing book shops, libraries or charity shops to choose a book. I always get two at a time so that when I get home I have another enjoyable moment deciding which to start first.

The rose would be the top choice for me, but I have given my mother a bareroot rose before and she appeared distinctly underwhelmed.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 05/12/2025 08:50

I'd love pretty much all of that list. Except for the Rose cream because the smell of rose makes me think of old ladies and powder puffs in the 1980s.

But I'd be massively delighted with the hair grip and the food stuffs and the champagne and the ear cuff and the huugies earrings.

I'd be less than overwhelmed with the Rose, and over the moon with the book subscription - I love going into waterstones and getting recommendations from the lovely man at our local shop!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 05/12/2025 09:04

There's a wide range so surely someone would be happy.

I wouldn't pay £50 for a bracelet when I can get a 9ct gold one for the same price but I'm sure many people would.

The book subscription sounds fun. I like to read books that are out of my comfort zone and don't mind a bit of a fail - but 99p kindle ones tbf, not when they're £££ a pop.

Those cheek blusher things are on every present ideas list right now, their marketing department might be sending more out than they'll be able to sell.

A £35 scrunchie?! Imagine being presented with that

My thoughts exactly!

ZaZathecat · 05/12/2025 09:13

My thoughts exactly!

But you can wear it on your wrist too!! 😂

PermanentTemporary · 05/12/2025 10:07

I like lots of those things. I’d particularly like the Air Tag, the ear cuff, the hot water bottle and mask, another bare root rose, the socks, the Zadie Smith, some of the food.

Id just be careful about a few things. I’ve been given beautiful earrings several times including by people very close to me, but I don’t have pierced ears and it’s depressing. Likewise I have big feet - REALLY big feet - so unless you’re sure of her shoe size, I’d avoid socks.

winnieanddaisy · 05/12/2025 10:17

I’m 72 and read as far as halfway through the list and I didn’t like anything on it .

WintersintheWorld · 05/12/2025 10:18

Cinema thing would be favourite but not Everyman as we dont have one. Also champagne, candle, eye shadow, bath oil.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 05/12/2025 10:21

You have to love an 'affiliate link' newspaper article. I love good socks and cashmere, but those prices are daft and look like someone is desperate to persuade us to buy stuff at inflated prices! Not so much what, but the prices!!!!

HeadyLamarr · 05/12/2025 10:26

Love posh socks, love cashmere, love champagne, love coffee, love my Everyman subscription (2 for 1 on Mondays so you don't have to go alone if you don't want to) love good olive oil and spices.

I'd like the gardening stuff on the Dad list. My hori hori was my favourite birthday present this year.

longtompot · 05/12/2025 10:30

I think I'd like quite a bit from that list, if not for me, then for others.

Ive bought posh tinned fish for my youngest as she loves tinned fish and always wanted to try out more expensive ones. I feel, some gifts are buying things someone wouldn't buy for themselves as they feel they are too expensive and the standard ones they buy are perfectly ok. And they are, but the more expensive ones can be so much better, as I found with tinned tuna.

Id personally love the ear cuff, huggie earrings, the olive oil, Olia Hercules gift set, wrist warmers, the two pack of socks, but there is a lot more I would be delighted to receive.

Anyway, I have saved some of it as possibles for my ds and dd

whiteroseredrose · 05/12/2025 11:32

I’d like the lime squeezer and the clothes shaver. Actually not as tat a list as usual.
