I'm looking for some inspo for Christmas present for my DM. I usually just stick to boxes of chocolates or gift cards, but I'm looking for something more personalized and something she would actually find useful. I found this article on the Guardian website which lists 64 gift ideas for mums. https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/dec/03/best-christmas-gifts-mum-uk

If you could pick one or two items from those mentioned, which do you think you would be happiest to receive? Or do you think everything on it is just overpriced tat?

The best UK Christmas gifts for mums: 64 thoughtful ideas they’ll love

Forget aprons and baking trays: these tried-and-tested gifts – from a lime squeezer for margaritas to a bare root rose – hit the spot for mothers

Rose, socks, sardines.

Which is an odd list 😄

HeadyLamarr · 05/12/2025 11:37

DP bought the lime squeezer and won't stop going on about how brilliant it is.

Agree with @Egglio only the David Austin rose (provided it’s a white one) and the Lanson Chanpagne is worth having. The rest is overpriced crap.
Why no suggestions such as opera, ballet, rock concert or theatre tickets. Or maybe a spa experience (depending on the Mum in question and her interests)? These are my favourite presents.

Recommend desdamona for a white DA rose.

literally the rose and champagne for me the rest is useless overpriced tat.

In case anyone wants further inspo, I use my melon baller and cherry stoner regularly. In fact the melon baller is so good, we had to buy a second one to use in our caravan! It makes making a fruit salad with melon so pleasurable!

In answer to your question... Dear God NO!!!
None of it. And thankfully my kids wouldnt dream/dare!!😁

GingerBeverage · 05/12/2025 13:04

If a child had saved up some pocket money and chosen a tin of sardines for me, I'd accept it and eat the damn sardines with hot sauce and rye bread.

CurlewKate · 05/12/2025 13:06

I’m probably nearer granny age-but I’d like the lime squeezer, the book subscription, the rose, the cashmere triangle, the cinema pass or if the earrings. I cook, so I know what spices and oils I like to use and generally have them.?Ditto the skin care stuff-I know what I like, so I would probably expect my kids to give me something from that range.

I’ve bought some presents that have worked well got the right person from here-worth a look?https://www.elizabethscarlett.com/

@LighthouseLED - sorry, I must have missed that. Still, who wants to go to the cinema on their own?!

Me! It’s great going to the cinema by yourself!

Hufflebuffs · 05/12/2025 13:17

I’d like the neck warmer. The slippers. The oil. The kajal eye liner. The boxer shorts. All the jewellery. The bath oil. The cotton wash bag. Hand cream. Shower oil. I would be delighted with any of these.

Someone else said Elizabeth Scarlett. I also recommend those. Or Turtle Doves wrist warmers which I prefer to the ones on the Guardian list.

YouJustLikeToLetYourselfDown · 05/12/2025 13:24

I’ve got the Victoria Beckham eyeliner and the wild rose beauty balm which are both good. I’d be happy with the cinema subscription.

What does your mum like?

CurlewKate · 05/12/2025 13:27

Going to the cinema on your own is one of the great joys of life!

CurlewKate · 05/12/2025 13:28

And do got a selection of tinned sardines for Christmas last year- it was one of his best presents.

Some people like going alone but just because you have a subscription doesn’t mean you have to go on your own anyway.

NRTT

In a word... No 🤣

At a push

  • eye mask and hot water bottle (but I wear an eye mask anyway)
  • Christmas box because food is always good
  • bed socks because Ill use them

If she uses candles, then a matchbox might be nice depending on her aesthetic. I like https://jolaing.com/collections/ceramic-matchboxes but I think they are just a tile stuck on a cardboard matchbox.

Ceramics

Our best-selling matchboxes have been featured in Stylist, The Times, House and Garden and Sheer Luxe. The ceramic artwork is meticulously crafted by hand and fired in Stoke-on-Trent, and each unique box is signed and numbered.

Yes! If they've saved and gone to the effort, there is obviously thought and love behind it.

One of my favourite ever gifts was a drawing my primary school daughter drew for me. She'd spent every lunchtime at school for a week drawing it and carefully cutting it out because she thought I'd like it. She was so proud when she gave it to me. I had it framed and she was delighted. A few years later I took it down because we were decorating and she was older and embarrassed by it so has banned me from putting it back up. I still have it tucked away safe and it makes me smile when I see it.

HappySonHappyMum · 05/12/2025 14:31

Nope!

I still want to know why people would be pissed ff with the lime squeezer I have just helpfully sent to my DS…..

I already have a lemon squeezer, old glass one that used to belong to my mum. I am able to squeeze limes adequately with this too so don't need a separate lime squeezer (and my kitchen cupboards are already pretty full). I wouldn't be pissed off with it, but would be unlikely to use it.

Hell, I got everyone a microplane grater the year I discovered them. 30 years on and they're all still in use. I love a good piece of kit.

My mum buying me an iron, though - that was a loaded, pass/agg present. I never iron. Came in handy during the kids' Hama bead phase.

I don’t get it either. I have one like the one on the list and it’s excellent, much better than any other citrus juicer I have used. I gave my mum a nutmeg mill and she was delighted!

The prices! Jesus!

Yup. Even the things approaching possibly maybe acceptable are hugely over priced.

DilemmaDelilah · 05/12/2025 18:34

Bedsocks, hot water bottle and book subscription please.

I would NOT appreciate any of the other gifts.
