I'm looking for some inspo for Christmas present for my DM. I usually just stick to boxes of chocolates or gift cards, but I'm looking for something more personalized and something she would actually find useful. I found this article on the Guardian website which lists 64 gift ideas for mums. https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/dec/03/best-christmas-gifts-mum-uk

If you could pick one or two items from those mentioned, which do you think you would be happiest to receive? Or do you think everything on it is just overpriced tat?

The best UK Christmas gifts for mums: 64 thoughtful ideas they’ll love

Forget aprons and baking trays: these tried-and-tested gifts – from a lime squeezer for margaritas to a bare root rose – hit the spot for mothers

I think I'd cry if I got most of these for Christmas. A tin of sardines FFS!!

So would l. Hideous pill boxes or gold jewellery. I only suit silver!

l like cashmere scarves , books but not Zadie Smith, nice crafting materials, ( but not a hat kit, I can knit complex patterns) and basically anything not on that list.

letshavetea · 04/12/2025 22:20

@cariadlet and @LighthouseLED - absolutely nothing if that’s what appeals to
you!

SwedishEdith · 04/12/2025 22:25

Not scrolled through them all but like the lime squeezer (as a stocking filler) and the little vase. I agree with the concept of buying the best you can with your budget though rather than buying cheap and bigger. I want nice things I wouldn't buy for myself.

Countryfiler · 04/12/2025 22:26

I’m mid sixties and would like the rose, the champagne or the air tag. Most of the rest wouldn’t get used!

Screamingabdabz · 04/12/2025 22:27

A stripy egg cup? Jeez if anyone bought me that I’d wonder what was wrong with them.

There are some nice ideas but everything is overpriced and most of them look bonkers if you gave that as a single gift. Olive oil, however boujie, is still just a basic grocery item at the end of the day.

SwedishEdith · 04/12/2025 22:30

Actually, I like quite a lot of the ideas now I've looked properly 😁

DierdreDaphne · 04/12/2025 22:31

I'm closer to 70 than 60. I am hoping for 10 and a 12 kg kettlebells. A gift that says 'Mum I want you around and in good shape for many years to come'.

DierdreDaphne · 04/12/2025 22:35

(Obviously the Graun like all the papers gets like 50,000 press releases at this time of year (well September probably 😅) and it's someone's thankless task to sift through and put them into categories '0-5s' 'teenagers' 'grandads' etc. I imagine they are mainly chosen by how pretty they make the layout look)

I've put a subscription to fancy tins of sardines on my Christmas list 😂

Amiable · 04/12/2025 22:47

Some of these things are lovely, but it lost me at “tinned sardines are chic” !! 🤣🤣🤣

TubeScreamer · 04/12/2025 22:50

i’d love the bare root rose, the diary or the coffee

GTGGD · 04/12/2025 22:53

Ginger drink (which has caught my eye before). Socks and wrist warmers, to read in bed, are also of interest. At my age, I’m trying to declutter and live with less. Really my ideal Christmas present is being taken out for lunch at a later date or to the pantomime.

BoxingHares22 · 04/12/2025 22:53

The phone rope, the rose and the ear pods and air tag.

mynameiscalypso · 04/12/2025 22:54

SleepingisanArt · 04/12/2025 21:47

The only thing I like on that list is the rose! So much naff crap (pill boxes shaped like sweets no, just no!)

Haha, I was just going to say that I’d sent the sweetie pill boxes to my DH.

No, genuinely -posh tinned fish is 'having a moment'.

BestZebbie · 04/12/2025 22:57

Socks and wrist-warmers - but both could be found much more cheaply but still nice!
I actually also really like the memoir prompt book as I've recently enjoyed writing down some of my own memories for my own amusement....but that is the ultimate "we think you are old and going to die soon" gift, isn't it?

Tigerbalmshark · 04/12/2025 22:59

I’d take the champagne, cinema membership (though I wouldn’t use it enough to renew it myself), some of the jewellery and some of the food. Maybe one of the vases, though I have plenty.

I want to pick my own roses if I’m buying them, and honestly a rose is a bit of a commitment unless you know somebody is already planting a new flower bed.

mondaytosunday · 04/12/2025 23:03

Matchbox cover? Facecloth? Frame? Fake plant? Ugh.

BeaLola · 04/12/2025 23:08

I'm heading very quickly towards 60 and I would love the rose - but I have about 15 David Austin roses so it's my kinds of thing

The cinema if I had an Everyman near me - I don't sadly

What would I like apart from rose - depending on budgets -

a pair of Georg Jensen earrings - either simple silver or from the enamel daisy line

Potted hyacinths or narcissus

The botanicum tree book

Tickets to Kew Gardens when orchid festival is on

Abba Voyage

Cinema tickets for live stream of an opera of Giselle ballet in 2026

Lisa Eldridge lipstick

Good colouring fine tipped pens and an interesting pattern of mandala colouring book

Good home coffee machine inc one that does good lattes or cappuccinos

PoachedCloud · 04/12/2025 23:10

A suggestion for people who have said the bare root rose would be a good present. Please consider buying a Hope rose from Hope plants Ltd. which is sold to raise funds for Camilla Chapman, a mum of 4 young boys who had stage 4 cancer. Thank you.

Startoftheyear2025 · 04/12/2025 23:14

Think most of the gifts are fab. It’s great to get something a little luxurious that you wouldn’t buy yourself.

sparkleghost · 04/12/2025 23:15

The toast vase is quite nice, if she likes fresh or dried flowers? There’s probably lots of lovely similar ceramics on Etsy though which are handmade and even nicer! You could maybe order her a bloom & wild letterbox bunch to go with it?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/12/2025 23:18

A lime squeezer? A tin of sardines? I’d be fucking outraged.

ScaredOfFlying · 04/12/2025 23:22

I asked for a lemon and lime squeezer like that one 2 years ago and I bloody love it. Mine is yellow and green and has a flap to convert from lemon to lime size.
