December 1st breakfast

IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

There are better ways of showing care and love than through sugar.

Oh, have a day off.

CandyCaneKisses · 01/12/2025 08:41

How do people have time? We are up at 6 and in showers and out the door.

Why don't people just whip up some double cream and serve that instead of the stuff which comes in tins and has additives? Don't understand that one at all!

because you cant squirt that directly into your mouth so there is zero fun in it

BooptotheFloof · 01/12/2025 08:45

I think it’s a bloody lovely idea and if you have the time and enthusiasm to make the 1st December special it’s a lovely way to start the month

It’s sad that other people don’t share the same festive spirit

tigerlady14 · 01/12/2025 08:46

ignore the nasty commenters, this is a really kind thing to do and these children will remember this 🩷

AliceMaforethought · 01/12/2025 08:46

OP, what a lovely idea. You are a lovely person. And, just think. You've not only provided the children with a lovely breakfast, you have given a early Christmas present to the bitter moaners on Mumsnet who like nothing better than to drag others down.

viques · 01/12/2025 08:46

Why? Just Why? What a waste of energy, time and money, not to mention sending your kids off to school with a full belly load of sugar instead of a nutritious breakfast. I just hope the messages you get from your fellow insta folk make the effort worth while.

Calliopespa · 01/12/2025 08:46

Well op you have unleashed all the pent-up bitterness of a few!

What a kind thing to do for these children.

Genuinely this would be utter carnage if we tried to achieve this in our house before school - and I'm not the least ashamed to say so - and we won't be adopting it! Pancakes here are strictly for weekends, though I have occasionally managed a few comforting crumpets and jam as a treat on an especially gloomy sort of school morning.

But well done for giving them something special.

EINSEINSNULL · 01/12/2025 08:47

This is utterly ridiculous now. It's a normal day for most people.
Edit - I see that you're trying to be kind to those poor kids, I get that and think it's lovely, but still think the idea of 1st Dec being somehow special is ridiculous.

Does it make you feel good about yourself to shit on other people?

No, but I like these ideas for Christmas Day. DH and his parents have pork pie, which I find too heavy first thing.

I've read about the tradition of pork pie for xmas day breakfast before and really like the sound of it as we always end up having it late morning then not eating until dinner.

OP your breakfast sounds amazing. I bet the kids will absolutely love it.

travelallthetime · 01/12/2025 08:48

Gosh there are some proper drainers in here, 'oh the additives', 'oh the sugar', 'oh the drama' jesus!
Its a special breakfast people, stop being judgy and scroll on if your kids eat fruit and pissing yogurt for breakfast every morning. They will rebell when they are older and scoff Lucky Charms and then you will have something to cry about.
Anyway op, we do a special breakfast on xmas eve, usually make a nutella xmas tree with puff pastry (if you google it it will come up), you can assemble it the night before and as long as it is well covered and in the fridge, it will be fine to cook the morning off. When cooked we drizzle with water icing and sprinkles and mashmallows so it looks like it is decorate (oh the sugar content, its fabulous!!)
incedentally, this is also good as a savoury dish, filled with pesto, sundried tomatoes and cheese and drizzled with balsamic glaze.

Buzzlightfear · 01/12/2025 08:51

No kids here but that sounds like a lovely thing to do for your friends kids.

I have no idea why people have to be such dicks on here. You're doing a nice thing.

I hope you all enjoy your special breakfast OP, it sounds fab.

That tree is actually beautiful.

I might just manage that for the dc on Christmas Day since my mum is coming over and I can ask her to do it.

We always have smoked salmon and cold cuts of meat as a late family (champagne) brunch, but I'm not sure the children are as excited by it so this might be a nice addition. I might even consider a savoury one as well.

But there will be no nutella tree on a Monday school morning in this house.😅

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/12/2025 08:54

No special breakfast here, however we do start to simulate the journey from Nazareth to Bethleham by using the old rocking horse from the Play Room draped with a grey blanket, to act as the donkey. We move it from room to room each night when the kids have gone to bed, rather like that Sodding Elf thing (which we certainly don't do!).

Each morning we assume a different role to play while covering the 'journey' and include the various events that occurred, for example when Joseph lost a flip-flop or Mary gets sand in her eye.

I think this will probably be the last year we do it as the 'donkey' is very heavy, being hand-carved mahogany, (made in Val Gardena, Italy) and so it's becoming a bit of a chore. Anyway the kids are off to Uni next year (Oxford or Cambridge - I haven't decided which yet).

Merry Christmas

motherboredd · 01/12/2025 08:54

Sounds amazing op! I would have loved that as a kid

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/12/2025 08:54

Sounds like a lovely thing to do for children who are having a hard time. Never mind the old grumps on here. 🎄🎅🏻

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 01/12/2025 08:54

What a lovely thing to do.
I could only dream of family members who would care enough about my children to do something like this for them in difficult circumstances.

Merry 1st December xx

justpassmethemouse · 01/12/2025 08:54

This sounds lovely - a lot of work for a breakfast! But well done you.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 01/12/2025 08:55

If the visiting children are in the midst of a serious family emergency I would have thought that routine and security are the most important things atm. Find out what they usually have and try to recreate it.

XiCi · 01/12/2025 08:55

Absolutely shocked at the level of cuntery on here. OP has explained she has these children in her home that are away from their parents and feeling sad about a family situation and is doing something lovely to cheer them up then a load of twats pile on banging on about sugar and 'faff'. These people must be absolute nightmares to be around in real life. Disgusting.

NewGirlInTown · 01/12/2025 08:56

What the actual fuck?

Well for me the spirit is willing ... the flesh, however ...

Let's just say I feel great when everyone is succesfully out the door with porridge and a glass of milk in their tummy!
