IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

No special breakfast here, however we do start to simulate the journey from Nazareth to Bethleham by using the old rocking horse from the Play Room draped with a grey blanket, to act as the donkey. We move it from room to room each night when the kids have gone to bed, rather like that Sodding Elf thing (which we certainly don't do!).

Each morning we assume a different role to play while covering the 'journey' and include the various events that occurred, for example when Joseph lost a flip-flop or Mary gets sand in her eye.

I think this will probably be the last year we do it as the 'donkey' is very heavy, being hand-carved mahogany, (made in Val Gardena, Italy) and so it's becoming a bit of a chore. Anyway the kids are off to Uni next year (Oxford or Cambridge - I haven't decided which yet).

Merry Christmas

😁😁😁

This is the Christmas section and I clearly said ‘IF’ you do a special breakfast for today. You don’t so…..erm……🤣

These children are my closest friends children and they’re going through a bad time at the moment, I’m willing to have a ‘big old faff’ to make them feel a little bit happier at the moment because I love them. It’s really not much effort anyway, we usually make porridge, eggs, pancakes for breakfast and have fruit etc.

OP, I think this is lovely. You are looking out for your friend’s kids who are having a bad time. You are a brilliant friend.

If it was me and it was just before school (weekend would be different), I’d try and keep the sugar content down and make it fun while focusing on filling their bellies for the day ahead. I’d go for Christmas tree crumpets, and maybe some fruit cut up into a star shape. You can get some lovely hot chocolate flakes from M&S or Tesco finest which are lower in sugar, with some whipped cream on top.

I wish I had a friend like you who I could not only drop my kids to in an emergency, but know that emotionally they were well looked after too. You are lovely.

I love this idea!! I’m astonished at the negativity from a few posters though, why be so unpleasant?

MogsChristmasBoiledEgg · 01/12/2025 09:01

Ignore all the mizzos here OP. I’ve heard of North Pole Breakfast long before I had kids. We usually shift it to a Sunday brunch (because I cba getting up early enough on a school day 😬).

We do pancakes/waffles, fruit arranged in some sort of ‘festive’ shape, yoghurt with Christmas sprinkles or similar, hot choc and the Christmas plates, cups etc out. Easy and festive. (Because contrary to what you’d read here, it’s ok to do silly and fun things sometimes!)

Hope the kids are ok, you’re doing a lovely thing for them.

Owlbookend · 01/12/2025 09:02

It sounds like a lovely thing to do. I wish i'd had the energy to do something similar when DD was little. I cant believe people take the time to criticise someone for making a nice breakfast for kids at the start of advent. It might not be your thing, but worthy of criticism? Too much sugar? Really. Im sure the grinchs are enjoying 'overnight oats' or 'massive salads' from a position of moral superority. 🙄

travelallthetime · 01/12/2025 08:43

because you cant squirt that directly into your mouth so there is zero fun in it

I had no idea children were allowed to do this! Not very good for teaching table manners!

Gosh there are some proper drainers in here, 'oh the additives', 'oh the sugar', 'oh the drama' jesus!
Its a special breakfast people, stop being judgy and scroll on if your kids eat fruit and pissing yogurt for breakfast every morning. They will rebell when they are older and scoff Lucky Charms and then you will have something to cry about.
Anyway op, we do a special breakfast on xmas eve, usually make a nutella xmas tree with puff pastry (if you google it it will come up), you can assemble it the night before and as long as it is well covered and in the fridge, it will be fine to cook the morning off. When cooked we drizzle with water icing and sprinkles and mashmallows so it looks like it is decorate (oh the sugar content, its fabulous!!)
incedentally, this is also good as a savoury dish, filled with pesto, sundried tomatoes and cheese and drizzled with balsamic glaze.

Do you have a fool proof recipe for the savoury puff pastry tree thingy? It sounds heavenly.

I hadn't realised you were joking when I was still just reading the moving the rocking horse bit and I have to say I loved that idea. I do think it would need a pair of donkey ears - perhaps on a hairband.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 01/12/2025 09:12

Honestly, there are some people who wpukd twist Mother Theresa into being a bad thing. Is it social media that makes people like this because they are anonymous or is it human nature?

I think it sounds lovely. Nigella has some great ideas in her Christmas book. I've made the cheese and onion strata which is lovely for adults and feels special. I reckon children would like it with baked beans, as do I!

Anything to break up the gloomy weather and darkness.

Many of the grinches/scrooges on here who also need to fuck off! Imagine having the time to be such negative arseholes!

Seaitoverthere · 01/12/2025 09:15

Hell would have frozen over before I would have done this when mine were little but I think it is a lovely idea given the 2 DC are having a miserable time away from their parents.

It’s really kind of the OP to do this and some people on here are compassion free miserable wankers and should have a hard look at themselves . Good on you OP.

MichaelmasDaisiesAndAutumSunset · 01/12/2025 09:16

Our "special" 1 December breakfast involved no one crying and almost non one shouting, and only leaving five minutes late. No idea what anyone ate. I had a crunchie and a coke zero in the car.

Yours sounds better 🤣 (and yes, we were all up super-early too but I have three "faffers" so it takes a long time to get to it).

'Allowed' to do this? It's bloody mandatory. For adults as well. If you've got this far in life without ever squirting cream from a spray can straight into your mouth I can only assume you wear barbed wire bloomers and shoes one size too small to make sure you're as miserable as possible.

christmassaurus · 01/12/2025 09:22

I don't do this (though kind of wish I'd made the strawberries I put on DD's porridge look a bit like santa) but I just wanted to say that you sound lovely going to all that effort for your friends kids to give them a little light during a tough time. I hope everything works out ❤️

Tana433 · 01/12/2025 09:22

Take no notice of the negative comments, they obviously havent realised this is the Christmas section. The Grinch has come early for some i see! What a lovely idea to put a smile on the faces of some children going through a hard time. You are a great friend and they are going to remember this for years to come.

SparklyStrictly25 · 01/12/2025 09:24

I don’t often comment on many threads but, if you’re still reading @ChristmasHasCome, I hope you can ignore the negative comments. What you are doing for your friend and these children is so kind and caring.

Clearly there must be some difficult circumstances happening and you are trying to provide some joy for children who really need it. We don’t know the circumstances, but one day of a ‘treat’ breakfast is not going to cause lifelong dental or weight problems, but might make the impact of whatever trauma these children are facing very slightly more manageable and provide a lifelong good memory alongside difficult memories. Well done OP - you sound like a special person and friend.

Yes the impact of these things can be quite magical for children.

adaywithy · 01/12/2025 09:32

thanks OP! after reading your post I was looking round our messy kitchen 🙈

but then wiped down the table, dug out our small xmas runner, bunged a candle on top and put on spotify 🎄

If you still have your friends‘ kids on Dec 5 they can put a boot out for St Nikolaus when they go to bed 🤶 just get some chocolates to fill them with (or nuts and apples 😂)

SouthLondonMum22 · 01/12/2025 09:34

Love a North Pole Breakfast!

Mine had -

Santa pancakes with cream for the hair and beard and strawberries for the red hat

fruit kebabs stacked like snowmen

North Pole milk which is just a cup of milk with a candy cane in it

advent calendar chocolate (of course!)

Lemonyyy · 01/12/2025 09:34

Jeez op you’ve had some miserly responses on here. I can’t say I’ve done a special breakfast for 1st December but in the Christmas holidays we’d do pancakes with squirty cream, lots of berries and I might make a nice fruit coulis. My kids also love those shaped crumpets, and the grown ups like scrambled eggs and salmon or sausage patties and eggs in an English muffin.

I hope your friend and her kids are ok op, you’re a good and kind friend and I’d be so appreciative if someone was making an effort to do something lovely for my kids when I was struggling.

Yep when I meet up with my school friends someone still usually brings some squirty cream for a hot chocolate and a sneaky direct bit in the mouth! We’re all pushing 40 but a bit of silly deliciousness is good for us all on occasion!

silkypyjamas · 01/12/2025 09:38

I think you might have started off a new tradition for others here OP!! Keep up the good work, we need more people like you on this planet 😍
