Xmas gifts I hate receiving

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

Chocolates.

Cornflakegirl7 · 24/11/2025 10:39

I make use of everything and appreciate everyting. I don't eat sweet things but they are dnated or used for getherings. Always good to have wine lying around for visitors or to take to an impromptu party so that doesn't bother me (I'll drink it if it is to my taste).

Maybe we should start a MN post Xmas gift donation/swap thread!

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/11/2025 10:39

Shower gel as I use soap.
Body lotion as I only use what I like and doesn’t make me itch.
Alcohol as I don’t drink.
Chocolate as I’m over weight and shouldn’t eat it. I do tend to take chocolates and biscuits into work, so they don’t go to waste.
Candles or wax melts, as I don’t use them.

AreYouSureAskedNaomi · 24/11/2025 10:44

Everything you said OP.

DH's family are awful for this. I have enough mugs, teatowels and Christmas ornaments to last me several lifetimes. Pretty bad after DH specifically asked them to stop as we have a clutter problem we are trying very hard to tackle. Some of it is clearly presents MIL didn't want and is re gifting. All cheap thoughtless tat.

ldnmusic87 · 24/11/2025 10:48

Any bath bombs or skincare I haven't chosen myself.

mashandgravy · 24/11/2025 10:48

Baylis and Harding or anything similar. I don't like or use anything heavily scented on my skin.

Iocanepowder · 24/11/2025 10:48

Slippers as i don’t wear them.

Cuddly toys for my kids.

RaininSummer · 24/11/2025 10:53

Those horrid Lindor chocolates. Anything from Avon. Sets with those plastic shower scrub things.

redluckycat · 24/11/2025 10:59

Alcohol, because I don’t drink alcohol.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/11/2025 11:01

Any skin care stuff.
Honemade chutneys, oils etc. Never use them.
Chocolates
slipper sock things.

rainbowsparkle28 · 24/11/2025 11:04

(Thankfully not often and usually from a loose acquaintance as close people know) - food, usually chocolate, that I can’t have - I am coeliac but a lot of chocolate etc. have may contains 😔

I'll have your horrid Lindor chocolates if that helps.

Agree on the sets with shower scrub things. I'd much rather have toiletries than clutter these days. But not the over prices sets. Just get me one decent shower gel that I will use daily and enjoy without all the extra packaging.

Kitchen gifts, I know why people do it as I LOVE cooking. But there is a limit to the number of fancy oils filled with stuff for decoration, dip bowls, serving bowls and platters etc. that I can fit in the house and most will never get used.

Catwoman8 · 24/11/2025 11:07

I hate cheap toiletry sets like bayliss and harding , body scrubs and lotions, dove sets. Anything like that! I dont use half of the stuff in the sets and would rather just buy the brands I like.

Belladog1 · 24/11/2025 11:08

I hate getting Christmas stuff on Christmas Day (mugs, coasters etc) because they don't get used. I like the build up to Christmas, but after the day I can't be arsed with festivities, so they get put in a bag for the following year. I would rather receive things like that on the 1st Dec.

My sister has a habit of buying 15 small gifts rather than 1 decent one that I might actually use. She'll get lots of silly poundland stuff that generally goes in the bin when I get home. I would rather she bought me a bottle of wine of something rather than useless tat.

Mikart · 24/11/2025 11:09

I only get gifts from dh and dd who know me well.
Just tell people you dont want them!

80smonster · 24/11/2025 11:12

Novelty anything, destined for charity, then straight to landfill at supersonic speed. Books with titles like ‘Why Mummy Drinks’ please, save me the unfunny LOLS. Cheapo bath products that make my skin wince just reading the box. Bog standard spirits or super market wine, why not buy me loo roll instead, I whack that on our weekly shop too. In short if you can’t be arsed, don’t bother, I’m not up for trading tat that needs taking to the chazzer shop first week of January.

Frogs88 · 24/11/2025 11:13

Any skincare or makeup unless they know the specific ones I use and gift that. Clothes/shoes/perfume - as it’s never something I would actually choose/like.

BunnyLake · 24/11/2025 11:20

Sets of hand and foot cream. Unopened, straight to charity shop. Not had one for years though as I only get a present from my adult kids nowadays and I always let them know what to buy. Other adults in the family don’t buy for each other anymore.

I love Lindor.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 24/11/2025 11:22

Homemade chutney / jam.
Candles - hate them.

I love getting pot plants, especially if a friend has grown from their own cutting... I love getting cheese / crackers / biscuits anything that you can have on hand for guests or late night food.

Quality socks. JOY. Give me a cashmere sock and a lump of cheese and I am happy.

Bath bomb = instant thrush.
(sorry tmi but Lush makes me itchy just walking past)...

Mansionscoldandgrey · 24/11/2025 11:24

Anything Christmas themed, cheap skincare and make up and anything made from acrylic or polyester.

fishfingerbutty · 24/11/2025 11:26

Some people seem to be really good at buying just the right present for someone, but there’s no one like that in my family.
DSis and I had an aunt who always gave us gifts with no thought behind them, eg if anyone remembers Tweed perfume, one year it was a Tweed gift set ( we were teenagers).

HelloClouds · 24/11/2025 11:27

This is why I buy my own presents!

Shufflebumnessie · 24/11/2025 11:28

Candles, any toiletries/smellies/skin care that aren't the specific items I use (very sensitive skin), reed diffusers (or any similar things to make your home smell - they trigger my migraines), Lindor chocolates, random bits from TK Maxx that I have no need for/no room for/is hideously ugly (my mum's usual choice of gift!!).
