Is this the bit of Mumsnet where we are allowed to be excited for Christmas?

I am So excited. Husband breaks up from work on Thursday and the kids finish Friday. We have a food shop coming on Friday too.
Today I went to a Christmas service to my daughter’s school at the local church, was very sweet.

I am just so excited for the long break, the look on their faces on Christmas morning and all the lovely family time we have planned

@ILoveCatsAndKittens

This recipe the legendary Soup Dragon Flapjacks Xmas Grin

I do double ( so use a whole tin ) I don't add anything but the world is your oyster here.

............................................................................................................

SoupDragon · 09/09/2023 19:59
250g porridge oats (the cheap type, not large ones),
150g Butter,
2 generous tablespoons (75g) Golden Syrup
half a tin condensed milk
baking tin, no bigger than about 18cm x 28cm
Method:
Preheat the oven to 160 degrees c
Line the baking tin with baking parchment.
Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat and add the syrup. Keep gently heating and stirring until all is melted and mixed.
Add the condensed milk and mix. Bring to the boil for about a minute. If I'm honest, I just bung the milk in at step 3.
Remove from the heat and gradually add the oats, folding them in. All the oats should be coated, and the mixture quite dense, but still sticky. Don't add so many oats that the mixture becomes dry.
Pour the mixture into the tins and spread about so that it lines the tin to a depth of 2-3cm. Don't squash the mixture in, just spread it evenly.
Bake in the oven for about 15mins. You should take them out when they just start to go brown round the edges, don't leave longer than this. If they're still squidgy in the middle that's fine, they set on cooling

It is !
An all those porridge oats for fibre Xmas Grin

The recipe I used before was sugar/butter/syrup/oats and was really brittle , These are deliciously squidgey but not raw tasting

The flapjacks sound fab 70, I am going to try them after Christmas.

I've finished for Christmas, yippeee. Had the carol concert last night and even though I've heard the kids rehearsing a few times I still had to bite my lip to stop the tears.

Hosted PIL, BIL and SIL and their kids over weekend so there was 15 of us. Brilliant but exhausting and I'll be finishing the post weekend clean today.

@IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour it is indeed the place where you can get excited about Christmas!!!!

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 17/12/2025 12:39

Definitely going to try the flapjacks 70. Thanks for posting it

NoWordForFluffy · 17/12/2025 18:52

I'm envious, Magnolia (of you having finished work, not your 15 people in a house, that gives me conniptions Xmas Grin ).

It's wild here tonight. Wet and windy. Grim. Thankfully I don't have to be anywhere.

I went to the school Carol service last night, which was lovely. I'm not Catholic, so didn't know all the blessings etc, but it was nice to go.

I am essentially forcing myself to tick things off the list in the hope I start to feel festive.
I have wrapped the majority of presents for everyone else - just LO and DH’s to go.
We (me and LO) posted the cards that needed to go and delivered the neighbour cards this evening.

Also, the Christmas factory shop near me is closing for the season on the weekend and their their usual ‘everything must go and everything is half price’ sale started today so I popped over on my lunch break.
Got some great bargain lights, including a small outdoor coloured set that I’ve put on my wreath. It looks decidedly old fashioned and I love it.

Am about to have tea then will be tackling the lettering on my dads cross stitch card and wrapping the final 4 presents for everyone else.

TheWoollybacksWife · 17/12/2025 20:15

I'm envious of your Carol service Fluffy. I miss the days of school Christmas events but not the PTA nonsense

I'm done. Everything is bought and wrapped. Trees up. All the cook ahead food has been done. The non perishables were delivered today and the oven is clean. However, my Christmas spirit is also lacking Meeces. I think I'm definitely going through the motions.

FurForksSake · 17/12/2025 20:23

DH has made the Christmas Eve soup, it’s in the freezer. He made spiced parsnip and apple, and carrot and coriander. He’s very proud of them.

Hes going to make some sourdough rolls to go with it. I might suggest he makes half white and half sourdough.

ILoveCatsAndKittens · 18/12/2025 13:59

Ive been to collect my final order this morning.......and its wrong!!! Pyjamas for DH, ive already had an incorrect pair delivered and still waiting for the refund on them. So to now collect another incorrect pair is frustrated!

Miserable rainy day today, ive done a food shop, got some mince pies and the gammon and also bargain 8pence veg, cans of pop and a bottle of prosecco. I need to check how long the turkey in the freezer takes to defrost. To be honest, I dont need to get much xmas food as theres only the 3 of us and we are having our lunch on boxing day.

Hope the weather is a bit better for everyone else!

FurForksSake · 18/12/2025 14:19

I managed to buy myself some Christmas pyjamas in Primark this morning, £5 in the sale as I fit in child size.

7 days to go!

frozendaisy · 18/12/2025 14:27

I have one more part of present to buy - set of acrylic paints - it’s a 5 minute walk which I will enjoy tomorrow before teens get home.

Wrapped little but prefer wrapping once decorations up which they aren’t yet. Everything to be posted has gone. Rest is local so no stress.

Need to find the string!

ILoveCatsAndKittens · 18/12/2025 14:40

Well done on the bargain @FurForksSake I was in Primark this morning and it was so so busy! I knew what i wanted, made a beeline for it and left!

Magnoliasunrise · 18/12/2025 16:01

I'm sitting down for first time today after running around since I left the house at 6.45am.

It's pouring down here too and I can't remember when it wasn't raining.

I made some mince pies with the homemade mincemeat and a big lasagne to freeze coz what we need right now is more food.....

I'm out of Whamageddon - bloody Trevor Nelson and his very short Whamageddon warning yesterday, I nearly fell over the vacuum cleaner in my haste to get to my phone but alas too late.

Glennponder · 18/12/2025 17:30

Hello 👋
Hope everyone has dodged this awful flu?
Dds are much better than they were, but very tired.
Dh told me he "needed 2 x amazon giftcards" at 7am this morning 🙄
So I've ordered them.
Dd bought dh a bottle of port and that's it...all done.
Just hoping all my groceries arrive in Xmas eve!
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas 🎄

Less than a week people! 🚨

Happy birthday to Why today. 🎁

Glenn, did your daughter get to her graduation in the end? Luckily we've all dodged the flu here. For now. 🤞🤞

I'd never have a shopping delivery on Christmas Eve in case it went wrong! At least most places send you a receipt nice and early so you can go out to correct any issues (if you have time).

I have Sainsbury's groceries delivering on Tuesday, as well as a Tesco collection and a Sainsbury's Food to Order collection on the same day. We're also getting our cheese from the village as well as going to the pub for DH's birthday that day.

Weds is just the Booths collection. I'm still haunting TGTG in case they do their roasting meat bag for Booths again this year!

Has anybody who likes coffee ever eaten chocolate coffee beans? DH likes coffee and Booths have some of these, but I'm not sure if they're grim or not! Opinions would be good (I hate coffee!).

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 19/12/2025 08:03

I found chocolate covered coffee beans weird Fluffy the chocolate is nice but I nearly broke a tooth on the very hard coffee beans.
Didn't avoid the flu here. DS and I both got it, but DH was fine for once. Normally he catches something and has to go to bed for a week.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/12/2025 08:21

Chocolate Coffee beans are delicious @NoWordForFluffy , but as Granny says , they're very crispy !
They're nice on desserts too , look very pretty and as long as the person knows what they are when they take a bite .....

Today is my busy housework day . Onto the laundry pile already then round the local shops - posting a card, drop off a parcel, buy the Greggs Xmas Grin

Our Sainsbury order is for Tuesday then I can buy any last minute or unavailable things on the Wednesday .

Then we can have a CHRISTMAS FRIDGE ( there will be a post and it will be an utter carnage pile on if previous years are anything to go by !) Xmas Shock

NoWordForFluffy · 19/12/2025 08:23

Might avoid then! Xmas Grin

Does your DH have a dressing gown of doom, @GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick?!

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 19/12/2025 08:26

Thanks for the birthday wishes @NoWordForFluffy

I have a Morrisons delivery tomorrow and an Ocado delivery on Monday so can add anything that does not come. I may add an Iceland order on Tuesday as well but we shall see.

Off to see the parents on Sunday as well as popping in to eat mince pies @NoWordForFluffy‘s house. I plan to do a bit of cleaning today and wrapping the last presents I have to do.

Not had flu here thankfully but then I don’t go out much to avoid catching things. Being immunocompromised and flu would not go well together.

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 19/12/2025 08:27

I love the Christmas fridge thread 70.
