Stockings for 17 and 19yo…when to stop?

Just that really…we also have a 28 yo but I can’t remember when we stopped with his stocking.
They usually get a stocking of about 10 small pressies then the big presents are around the tree, spread out over the day.

We have a 27 and a 28 year old and I may as well move into a nursing home if they didn't get a stocking! They'd disown me! 😂

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 20/10/2025 16:16

2 adult DCs here well grown and flown, but they still get stockings 😊

Yes , me too 29 and 32. As for not doing their Advent Calendars …….(Nana made them for them as babies, I upgraded to dark chocolate coins a few years back )

I'm in my 40's with my own child and my parents still do me a stocking when we're with them for Christmas!

Spirallingdownwards · 20/10/2025 16:18

Still do them for mine and have added in DILs too

Hadalifeonce · 20/10/2025 16:18

Still do stockings, they are 25 and 23, sometimes also do one for DH (he's a lot older!)

TheNightingalesStarling · 20/10/2025 16:19

You are either a stocking family or you aren't.

Will they care if you stop?

Well I carried on into their thirties.! But everyone is different so you must do what feels right for you

Everyone in the house on Christmas Even gets a stocking from Santa. Often stuff to share left in the fireplace too (jigsaw, games, sweets etc) It’s great fun, needn’t be expensive at all. Dc early 20s get 4-5 wrapped bits under the tree. Couple of surprises and things they know about ‘put away for Christmas’ .

darlingdaydreamer · 20/10/2025 16:21

35 and still get a stocking! Mum does one for DH now too, I'd be fuming if I didn't get one 😂

softlyfallsthesnow · 20/10/2025 16:22

Ha ha! Stop? I did suggest it once. The sad, reproachful faces were too much to bearGrin

TottenhamCake · 20/10/2025 16:22

I'm 32 and my mum still does me a stocking :D I still get an easter egg as well!

My mum does one for my partner as well :D

I’m 26 and my mum does me a stocking and I’d be upset if she didn’t!

freezingmytoesoff · 20/10/2025 16:24

If you're under my mums room on Christmas morning you will receive a stocking, no matter age or relation. I'm 32 and I get one, as does my husband, step-dad, grandparents... if I had a friend join they would get one too. My dad (her ex husband) also still gets one from her. The woman is a saint (she gets one from us).

Can't quite believe you only do one for 2 out of 3 of your children... even if one is an adult!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 20/10/2025 16:25

I’m older than modern religion and my mum still does me a stocking! And I do one for her. Nothing spendy, generally a few perishables, a pair of socks and maybe a book! I still love it…

RosesAndHellebores · 20/10/2025 16:26

I asked mine when they were in 6th form if they wanted a stocking or £30. Happily they both said £30.

JadziaD · 20/10/2025 16:26

My mother once shipped a stocking to me in another country.

I have no intention of ever stopping!

LeftHandedPopcornScooper · 20/10/2025 16:28

I surveyed my 18, 20 and 22 year olds last weekend about whether or not they wanted stockings this year and got a yes from all of them.

AphroditesSeashell · 20/10/2025 16:29

I moved out at 17 and stockings stopped then. I can't remember noticing, really.
My kids are 16 and 17 and while they still live at home (for a long time yet, I suspect), stockings will continue. I don't see it being something I'll continue once they've moved out as to me it's a 'Christmas morning' thing and if you're giving it later in the day, then the moment has passed.

Everyone in my house gets a lovely stocking that I spend ages thinking about the contents and making them special... but no-one gives me one. le sigh~

LittleOwl153 · 20/10/2025 16:31

We took a different tac... everyone puts a little something (budget £1) in everyone else's stocking. That way everyone gets one and its not all on 1 person. I still have a tween and there are 4 teens involved as well as 6/7 adults!

Cantseetreesforthewood · 20/10/2025 16:32

Stocking household here too.
DH makes me one, I make him one, and we both contribute to the (teenage) kids.
My grandmother got one every year until she died aged 87!

ghostyslovesheets · 20/10/2025 16:42

My mum did one for me until I became a mum myself at 32!

DDs are 23, 21, 16 and still get one

Mumwithbaggage · 20/10/2025 16:45

DCs (31 down to 21) get a stocking if they are here for Christmas, partners are included in their stockings. They do one for me and dh and have since oldest was mid teens. There's not tons of stuff in but it's just a bit of Christmas morning fun.

Pregnancyquestion · 20/10/2025 16:50

A rule that seems to have developed in my family is you get a stocking until you have kids, then they get a stocking instead
