Stockings for 17 and 19yo…when to stop?

Just that really…we also have a 28 yo but I can’t remember when we stopped with his stocking.
They usually get a stocking of about 10 small pressies then the big presents are around the tree, spread out over the day.

My mother died two years ago when I was 58 and she was 85 and up until then I still got a stocking. I now do one for my brother who’s a couple of years younger than me and my husband does me one. All usually just little things plus socks, toiletries etc and the best bit - sweets 🤣

I moved out at 17 and stockings stopped then. I can't remember noticing, really.
My kids are 16 and 17 and while they still live at home (for a long time yet, I suspect), stockings will continue. I don't see it being something I'll continue once they've moved out as to me it's a 'Christmas morning' thing and if you're giving it later in the day, then the moment has passed.

Everyone in my house gets a lovely stocking that I spend ages thinking about the contents and making them special... but no-one gives me one. le sigh~

Well I’m outraged on your behalf

sunshinemakesmehappyx · 20/10/2025 16:55

49 and still get a stocking!
2 one from parents, one from the other half 😀

Caspianberg · 20/10/2025 16:56

Everyone here gets stockings if they are staying in the house. Even in our b and b.
Guests get chocolate, sweets, jams, small toy if kids

mummymissessunshine · 20/10/2025 17:01

Never!!! Everyone gets a stocking here if they are here on Christmas morning. Whatever age they are.

LBFseBrom · 20/10/2025 17:04

Mine is 46 and still gets a stocking.

My late husband used to do a stocking for me.

All part of the fun.

Greedybilly · 20/10/2025 17:09

I do one for my mum who is 80. She loves it! ( so do I😁)

Tulipvase · 20/10/2025 17:12

My mum did one for us until she got too ill. My dad then took over until he died but it was a watered down affair, a bottle of fizz and a lottery card. Still much appreciated though.

My eldest is 20 and I still and will continue to do stockings.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 20/10/2025 17:14

There'd be a riot if stocking werent done for our 34 and 27 years olds. The partners get them too. Though if they don't come home there will be random little gifts in their parcel.

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/10/2025 17:25

My eldest is 27. Still gets a stocking!

MightyGoldBear · 20/10/2025 17:25

I think I'm going to continue for as long as they want it. I'm 34 and I'd love to have the kind of relationship with a parent that they made me a stocking.

GiddyDog · 20/10/2025 17:36

My mum is in her 60's, she stays with us on Christmas Eve so I do her stocking now!

JaninaDuszejko · 20/10/2025 17:37

I got one until I was in my 30s, we had a second cousin from the other side of the world staying and DM said 'lets stop now'. I loved getting stockings.

I think if you want to stop do it at an obvious junction that makes things as equal as possible so 1) turning 18 or leaving school
2) 21 or graduation
Less good:
3) leaving home or getting married
4) never

My eldest is 17 so I've not thought about it yet.

AuntyBulgaria · 20/10/2025 18:35

Oh dear - my son is 17 he hasn't had a stocking for years. he still gets the same amount of presents though without all the tat.

mbosnz · 20/10/2025 18:37

DH and I are in our fifties - we still do stockings for each other. Daughters are in their twenties. Still do stockings for them! Our mothers are in their eighties - when they had Christmas with us, still did stockings for them. . .

MeganM3 · 20/10/2025 18:38

When they no longer wake up at your house on Christmas morning.

Alpacajigsaw · 20/10/2025 18:39

Mine are same age and I doubt we will ever stop stockings! I suggested it 2 Christmases ago and there were howls of protest

dancinginthekitchen · 20/10/2025 18:43

Everyone who is in our house on Christmas morning gets a stocking. I do one for DH and he does one for me and then I do stockings for everyone else 🎅🏻

autienotnaughty · 20/10/2025 18:44

Yeah we stopped for eldest when she moved out ( she and her bf still do them)
still do it for younger one (23)

Maray1967 · 20/10/2025 18:45

DS25 has moved out but still expected one last year! I made it a joint one for him and GF. Not sure what we’ll do if/when they have DC!

Caspianberg · 20/10/2025 18:48

Stockings aren’t tack here, they are just anything small that fits. I try and buy things we need or will use:

ie for my 5 year old this year it will have something like new card game, something arty, fidget type toy (slinky/ rubix cube). A Tonie. Chocolate. Mini Lego bag

TheGrimSmile · 20/10/2025 18:50

It never stops! I'm 53 and still get a "stocking" from my mum.

looselegs · 20/10/2025 18:54

Mine are 22 and 27
Eldest lives with his boyfriend, they both get a stocking complete with chocolate coins!
Youngest is 22. Her boyfriend also gets a stocking complete with coins!

Tidypidy · 20/10/2025 19:03

My mum stopped when I had my own child.

Qwerty21 · 20/10/2025 19:20

So, in short op, stockings should never stop wvd you owe your eldest back dated stockings lol
