Stockings for 17 and 19yo…when to stop?

Just that really…we also have a 28 yo but I can’t remember when we stopped with his stocking.
They usually get a stocking of about 10 small pressies then the big presents are around the tree, spread out over the day.

I’ll do them until they leave home I think, then be rather grateful to be free of them to be honest. I love Christmas, but find the stockings a bit of a pain. Too much sugar, too much stuff, too much that they don’t need. Just me?!

yes!

I dont' want to start the debate that was raging the other day, but I use stocking to put the smallest presents, whatever they are.

Anyone who comes for Christmas does get a stocking, value will vary 😂

I even do one for the dog if someone is that keen.

Stocking for adult children??!

Er...no.

Bluenose1966 · 20/10/2025 21:24

Never done stockings for my 3 boys, 32. 29 and 22. And definitely not starting now.
Not aware of anyone doing stockings until last few years, maybe I am just totally out of touch.

CharlotteLightandDark · 20/10/2025 21:26

Mine are 18 and 21 now and have still had them if they’re here at not their dads on Christmas morning - but honestly I find it a massive pain in the tits and would really like to stop now!

it’s so hard finding stuff that will fit but isn’t expensive or worthless tat. I hate buying crap for the sake of it. Am seriously considering telling them both no more!

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 20/10/2025 21:31

We won’t stop the kids (21 and 19) won’t let us lol!! My own Mum did a stocking for us every year until she died (I was 43!)

BlueScrunchies · 20/10/2025 21:32

I do them for my siblings and parents. We are all 35+ 😅

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/10/2025 21:33

I think I only got a stocking until I was 18yo, my mum rolls her eyes at me for still doing one for my 19yo dd.

Its not a thing in my family to do stockings for adults.

TeenLifeMum · 20/10/2025 21:34

I still get one when we stay at my parents Christmas Eve into Christmas. I’m 43 🤣

BendingSpoons · 20/10/2025 21:37

My mum stopped doing me a stocking when I was in my early 20s, not sure when exactly. I think she stopped for me and my brother at the same time. He is 2 years younger but wouldn't be that fussed. My sister was still under 18 so she carried on a bit longer.

Christwosheds · 20/10/2025 21:39

My two are 18 and 20. I am never stopping stockings ! I do them for a couple of friends too, and for my Mil.

MsGiGi · 20/10/2025 21:39

We’re a stocking family. My DM makes me one and I make her one. I make one for my DP too!

Delphiniumandlupins · 20/10/2025 21:49

My DC are in their 30s. Anyone sleeping in our house on Christmas Eve gets a stocking with a chocolate orange and a few other little bits. The other adults also put something into each stocking so we all get some surprises.

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 20/10/2025 21:50

I'm planning to stop when they leave home. Might re-think that if they are still here at 30

Silverbirchleaf · 20/10/2025 21:52

Mine are in their twenties, and I’d still be doing it if we didn’t get a dog. Not safe to leave the stocking out.

justasking111 · 20/10/2025 21:54

Still do a stocking for adults married

I also still have to get the chocolate Cadbury Christmas stocking for them.

pinkpony88 · 20/10/2025 22:05

We got stockings until the year my Mum died ☹️
She also used to still do things around the house to prove Father Christmas had been 🤣
Many happy and hilarious memories!

suburberphobe · 20/10/2025 21:22

Stocking for adult children??!

Er...no.

Grinch…is that you? 🤣

egganbacofoil · 20/10/2025 22:08

I stopped stockings once grandchildren came along. My youngest who is now an adult is still annoyed that he had 4 years less than siblings but has got over it now !

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 20/10/2025 22:30

You don't. Whenever they have Christmas at home with you they get one.

HostaCentral · 20/10/2025 22:34

I stopped doing stockings when the DC's left primary. Bah humbug. We tend to do one bigger present, then a few smaller ones round the tree. It amounts to the same thing.

suburberphobe · 20/10/2025 21:22

Stocking for adult children??!

Er...no.

why?

TheDenimPoet · 20/10/2025 22:45

I'm 35 and still get a stocking. And an advent calendar. And an Easter Egg. The only difference is I also do the same for my mum now, whereas when I was a kid I wouldn't have.

Choclabratwatowner88 · 20/10/2025 22:50

DS is 17, thought he’d might want to stop last year but he said he still wants one. He loves it when we wake up they’ve always came to our bed to open thier stockings together. So I’ll be doing it till they no longer want one

Edinvillian · 20/10/2025 22:52

I was going to say when they move out, then I realised my daughter moved out 6 years ago but still gets a stocking, so I’m no use 🤣

FairyBatman · 20/10/2025 23:03

46 and still get a stocking if we are at DMs. DM gets a stocking if she stays at ours. It always has a satsuma, nuts, lottery scratchcard, usually mini smellies and a bath bomb.
