Stockings for 17 and 19yo…when to stop?

Just that really…we also have a 28 yo but I can’t remember when we stopped with his stocking.
They usually get a stocking of about 10 small pressies then the big presents are around the tree, spread out over the day.

My mum stopped doing a stocking when I moved out at 19 although it was only last year she finally agreed to stop buying me an advent calendar (Im mid 30s). DH and I do them for each other.
Ds19 moved out recently and I can’t decide whether to do his or not. He was always a bit scoffy about Father Christmas and sat there rolling his eyes when the younger children opened their stuff.

RestlessSparrow · 20/10/2025 19:28

I'm pushing 50 and have never had a stocking in my life. I do them for my children now though, who are now aged 14-18. I always thought it stopped when people left home? Like, you need to be in the same home on Christmas morning. Even now I fill them on christmas night, God knows why! What happens then, do eldery parents bring them round to you? How does it work?

DemonsandMosquitoes · 20/10/2025 19:45

23 and 20 and never had one!

carly2803 · 20/10/2025 19:51

i have my own kids and i get very upset if i do not get things like advent calendars off my parents!!! lol

mondaytosunday · 20/10/2025 19:53

Five years ago.

When their partners take over/or if they don’t wake up at yours on Christmas. But they can start chipping in to the Christmas magic

RaraRachael · 20/10/2025 19:57

I have a 35yo and 31yo. A couple of years ago I suggested we stop the stockings. They were horrified even though it's the same kind of stuff every year 😆

StrumpersPlunkett · 20/10/2025 20:05

We are a stocking family. DH and I do them for each other as well as the kids.
Obviously what we put in them has changed over the years but at 19 and 21 they boy still enjoy the cringe of gifts from Father Christmas. (gifts under th tree have always been from us, stockings from FC.)
In my stocking I always get some bamboo socks, nuts, chutney, smelly candle, chocolate. Dh gets similar.
The boys now have similar but we add a wrapped up coffee voucher, they still get some kind of soft toy and a book as well as silly chocolate and snacks

Ahwig · 20/10/2025 20:14

When my grandson became 18 I asked him if he thought he was too old now for a stocking. He looked me straight in the eye, held both my hands and said “ nanna, I will never be too old for one of your stockings” . Ok message received and understood. That’s me told.

WannaFOffOnHoliday · 20/10/2025 20:17

I couldnt imagine stopping for the 28 year old but still doing it for the 17 and 19 year olds.
Thats abit mean.
All or none

caringcarer · 20/10/2025 20:17

I'm 64 and my Mil still does stockings for DH and me. I still do stockings for my adult DC. Why stop?

AffableApple · 20/10/2025 20:22

Father Christmas gets me one. I'm in my 40s. I have toddlers.

I remind my mother to tell him I've been good so he knows to come.

What sort of amateur stocking operation is running in your family, OP?

Yes, there's a similar age gap between me and my elder siblings. Yonks ago mum wondered about stopping for all but I made the case it wouldn't be fair if they had xx more years than me. So she suggested just doing one for me for another xx years and they said not far cos I'd be the only one with a stocking. She happily continued.

We are now in our 40s and 50s with 12 kids between us and mum still does us all a stocking which we open at the family Christmas gathering at her house, usually between Xmas and NYE. Dad and us siblings all get bits for her stocking.

Meanwhile anyone staying in my house over Christmas gets a stocking including mum and dad in their 80s and my nonagenarian aunt. Never too old for some chocolates, socks, Clementines etc.

StampOnTheGround · 20/10/2025 20:29

I would be furious if my mum stopped our traditions (I’m 32, married with 2 children of my own!)

CautiousOptimist · 20/10/2025 20:36

I’ll do them until they leave home I think, then be rather grateful to be free of them to be honest. I love Christmas, but find the stockings a bit of a pain. Too much sugar, too much stuff, too much that they don’t need. Just me?!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 20/10/2025 20:44

If you wake up here on Christmas morning you get a sticking from Father Christmas and a pair of new pyjamas before bed on Christmas Eve.

WonderingWanda · 20/10/2025 21:06

I'm pretty sure my Mum still did me a stocking until I'd had kids of my own.

Almost2026 · 20/10/2025 21:10

We have just decided this year now they are all teens we will do stocking a bit like secret Santa, pull names and everyone will be responsible for filling someone else’s. So I might get one for the first time ever 🤣

Usernumbersomething · 20/10/2025 21:14

In our house everyone sleeping here on Christmas Eve gets new pyjamas, each person has to buy a pair for someone else and we make it a game of who can find the worst ones.
I do stockings for everyone and Santa obviously does one for me because it appears every year filled with thoughtful little gifts.

Moonlightfrog · 20/10/2025 21:17

Mine are 21 and 19 and both say the sticking is the best part of Christmas Day. I am 43 and I do myself a stocking as my parents never did them…..so making up for it now 🤣

Justkeepsmilingx · 20/10/2025 21:18

I still do them - and a homemade refillable Advent Calendar each for their homes and one for here for them to share - one of them makes a rota for the days on the back. I have a mix of children / grandchildren at home and not and one at University. I love the bits and pieces in a stocking. They still all get pants (eg Calvin Kleins) and socks (adidas) like they did when they were small - I ask every year if they still want them and they always say yes 😂

ThisGentleRaven · 20/10/2025 21:19

as long as there's a Christmas tree!

They also get advent calendar, but so do I 😂

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/10/2025 21:19

I’ll never get over the Christmas my Mum told me she wasn’t doing stockings anymore…I’ll never put my DD through that trauma.

that's a brilliant idea!

ACynicalDad · 20/10/2025 21:20

My mum stopped each of ours when we got a partner who would do it for us. Whether or not our partner did it for us or we did it for them it was essentially irrelevant.
