I don't know about anyone else but I find I struggle to think of gift ideas for myself (I have bday just after xmas so I get double trouble).

I've always found these threads quite helpful in sharing what others are getting for inspiration. I hope to maybe get a couple of these things if I'm lucky...

I am searching stationery- beautiful, smooth, fountain pen ink taking stationery for my letter writing friend. The sort that comes in a box, with envelopes. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Last year I asked on here for some ideas for nice stationery and a lovely Mumsnetter pointed me towards these people. Bought my DILs some beautiful journals last year.

You ‘can’t imagine’ just thinking of a few things you’d really love to own, when asked? And you think we’re the weird ones here?

A Christmas list isn’t a shopping list that one issues to their family and expects them to buy everything on it. It’s simply a list of IDEAS for things you would really love and appreciate, if someone is keen to buy you something. That’s all. To be honest, we keep gift buying fairly minimal in my family - my sister and I exchange a little gift worth less than a tenner, my brother usually makes me something as he’s very talented at a specific craft and I love his work. I buy for my mum and she buys something smallish for me and DP. DP and I get a few bits for each other, usually a couple of things from a list and a couple of little surprises - but I certainly wouldn’t expect everything/anything on my list, or feel even remotely entitled to receive them.

I always ask for a list from DP and my mum. I’ll usually get them a surprise or two as well, but lists are nice so I know they’ll be delighted with at least something I buy them and therefore money won’t be wasted. Hardly a crime, is it? Jeez.

I don't know. I would probably have to sit and think really hard.

I just don't feel right having people gift me stuff. I don't know why.

mum2jakie · 12/10/2025 19:19

I'd love this but would never ask for it as it's so frivolous and expensive for a single book:

A new iPhone. Mines battery lasts about an hour and it’s some very old version!

I have real problems with receiving gifts (unresolved trauma) so I'd like a charity goat or a women only latrine or even just a fiver to the foodbank. Not for altruistic reasons mind you, just so I can avoid feeling guilty and ungrateful for not liking a physical gift.

Ideal situation is a no present pact though. However, I do hope Santa brings you all at least one thing from your lists. Nobody is too old for Christmas gift excitement.

exactly this!
i don’t think i have previous trauma related to gifts but everything else you say is completely my thoughts too!

Just paying it forward, as I had never heard of them until I asked The Wonder Of Mumsnet!

That looks good - I think it's worth it if you'd enjoy looking at it.

And if anyone has got those headphones yet-do they work when lying on your side?

They are fantastic, the sound is stunning.

DaveWatts · 12/10/2025 21:07

EvieBB · 11/10/2025 20:44

It makes you sound rich!

I won't get all of them! It's just a wishlist... DH hates buying presents so I give him some suggestions and he'll pick one or two.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 12/10/2025 21:15

Ohhhh big birthday this year so my list is extensive! I won’t get a fraction on it but I like to be specific!

cotton or silk pjs
skincare that I like (Elemis, medik8)
body care
candles
my only no is clothes other than pjs as loosing weight so no point in buying me anything decent

RedwallMattimeo · 12/10/2025 21:17

48 and my list seems to be getting longer each year!

Bulbs/garden centre vouchers
Books/vouchers
Corset belt
Some red trainers, not quite decided on which ones
Diptyque candles (a girl can dream!)
Any of the Lego botanical collection that I don’t have
A new cross stitch kit
A robomop (sort of household but I’m the only one who will notice the effect of it!)

Latenightreader · 12/10/2025 21:24

I'd really love the lego botanics bonsai set - the one that came out in June and has autumny colours. I really, really, really want the X-Files lego set but (a) it isn't available yet and (b) it is probably going to be around the £200 mark so that won't happen. But oh how I want it.

An aqua sana spa day would be amazing.

Listen, if it makes you happy why not? I have a couple of Folio Society books and they’re deeply wonderful things to have. Please consider it.

Mine were delivered a few minutes ago. They are currently on charge. I'm on mum cabs duty this evening and have to nip in and out several times. If I get the chance to work out how to set them up, sync them to my phone etc I will try them tonight but it's more likely to be tomorrow night.

@GenerateNewUsername

I slept in them last night and was perfectly comfortable. I'm a side sleeper but I realised I turn my head a bit so I'm not actually on my ear. It might be less comfortable if you do put pressure on your ear. Sound was good.

I really wanted them for the noise cancelling properties as DH is a snorer but he working away at the moment so I won't be able to see if they pass the 'trying to sleep next to a chainsaw' test until next month.

Jovilady22 · 13/10/2025 07:53

My fantasy list involves my DH booking and organising anything

I have actually done a list this year as everyone moans that they never know what to buy me, I have a few hobbies and if I got vouchers for one of them I’d be extremely grateful
my list:
George Russell merch (F1 fan)
cross stitch kits (I’ll need to find these as I want a ‘series’)
scratch off theatre show poster
body shops satsuma shower gel (but just that)/ mini hand creams

I know roughly what the DD’s are getting (18 & 23) and the oldest boyfriend

they have sorted their dad out for Christmas and birthday as it’s 3 days before Christmas 🙄 but he’s still got models to make that I got him last year

PickleSarnie · 09/10/2025 19:37

The new Sony headphones because my old ones are held together with sellotape and hope!

Also really thick welly socks because ive lost 5 stone in the last year and last year's birthday wellies (ridiculously spendy le chameau neoprene ones) are too big now but I, obviously, refuse to replace them given how spendy they were.

Macarons. Fancy ones.

I bought double thick insoles from Sainsbury’s and my friend suggested pushing lambswool into the toes for shoes that are too big, works brilliantly.

Jade3450 · 13/10/2025 13:39

Fleur405 · 09/10/2025 19:32

What she said (mine are arriving tomorrow!).
Thanks for the suggestion… I guess I bought myself an early Christmas present.

Please report back - the enormous discount and all the weirdly formal 5 star reviews are a bit suspicious…

polkadothorse · 13/10/2025 17:03

A donation in your name to your choice of charity.

PrettyPretenderNegligentVendor · 14/10/2025 08:57

First night with those earbuds- they are loud, first impression. Much louder than my sleep band. I had to get the screen thing on the case working to get them quiet enough to sleep. The initial charge didn't last all night, so charge them before you use them. Sound was clear, they stayed in all night. I could sleep comfortably on my side.

However- I found others on Amazon using the same photos and with the same colour combo, all for around £30 with a claim they were reduced from £129.99. And with reviews saying they were a bargain at that price, so I don't think they are on for £130 that often.

Bjorkdidit · 14/10/2025 09:19

Beachhutgirl · 11/10/2025 23:20

I'd like something I haven't had to choose, buy and wrap up. I feel mean saying this, my Mun is very generous but can't any longer do any of these things, so I sort out my own presents (she pays so I don't really have anything to complain about)

The rest of the family just buy from Amazon wish lists.

Exactly. If you're sending links and lists of specific things, how is it a gift from the other person?

It's nonsense because you've done all the work and all they've done is click on a link and patted themselves on the back about the 'thoughtful' gift that they've given you when they've done nothing of the sort.

Unless they've chosen the gift themselves, it's not a gift IMHO. If I want something, I just buy it once I've decided which one I want and found the best price. And once I've done that, I might as well just buy it rather than go through the charade of pretending it's a gift from someone else because they clicked on the link I sent them.

If they want to buy me a gift for Christmas, they can choose and buy something small that they know I'll like and buy that. Far simpler all round.
