I’m feeling nostalgic and as I was a teenager in the 90s and an avid diary writer, I have evidence that I had the following for Christmas in 1992 (from friends and family):

a lockable vanity box
a new diary from WHSmith
a velvet floppy hat a la Blossom
a black velvet bomber jacket
Tribe perfume
a Purple Ronnie mug
a Body Shop Mostly Musk gift basket
Almay eyeshadow and lipstick
Boots Natural Collection shower gel and hair conditioner
Roxette album
Bath pearls

And in 1995:

a portable TV for my bedroom
Priscilla Queen of the Desert soundtrack
Charlie White perfume
Sun and moon hanging decoration
101 Uses for a Dead Cat book
A new diary
Little beanbag frog ornament
Boots Natural Collection wooden make-up set
Now compilation album
Boots Global Collection Turkish delight lipbalm

Can anyone else remember what they got? (With or without the use of a diary to check) I love how the lists above really sum up the pop culture of the time.

Barbies! I remember getting a Barbie with a pink ball gown which had little butterflies all over it, and she had a wand which was magnetic and would make the butterfly wings flutter! That could have been around 1995/1996. Also remember getting a tape cassette of Spice Girls album in the later 90s, and a Furbie around the turn of the millennium.

Bath pearls! That brings back memories..

One Christmas in the late 90s I got Marian Keyes's Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married and spent all day reading it. Good times.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 23/12/2024 00:02

CDs (mostly Britpop), books, body spray and perfume - I’m another who was into Tribe. Barry M Dazzle Dust in various colours, purple and gold were my favourites - we didn’t have YouTube makeup tutorials back then so god knows what I looked like. Clothes. Blank cassettes. Body shop stuff.

I was given a Groovy Chick tumbler glass from a friend in 1998 with “20th Century Chick” printed on the side and a picture of said “chick” driving a convertible car. I still have it, it’s been washed so often that her hair has turned from black to grey. Totally accurate.

Early 90s, I was still very much on my Sylvanian phase, but in 1993 I got a pink mountain bike and hideous aqua towelling dressing gown. From 1994, there is a photo of me with a cardboard star lamp and dark blue moon mirror, Natural Collection toiletries, a bottle of Tribe perfume, some Impulse body sprays and a Sweater Shop Sweatshirt.

1997, I am got Encarta (thanks parents!), a cross-stitch tiger kit, an electronic nail buffing set and a 'Bow That's What I Call music' CD

I really wanted the Sylvanian Families Manor House. I went on about it for weeks. I'm sure I even circled it in the Argos catalogue and pointed it out. But I got the (tiny) country cottage instead.

I didn't have poor parents.

I’ve also just remembered - it was like a mini Walkman but it had only one inbuilt song on it (with headphones) and no way to add other songs.
I remember having shania Twain ‘still the one’, a Britney one and a backstreet boys one.!
i used them on car journeys and would just alternate them on repeat 😂

Those bath pearls were lethal many a time I slid up in the bath, think they may have been banned for that reason!

Who remembers the Lola ball ?

Juliagreeneyes · 23/12/2024 00:29

For me, the true smell of Christmas will always be those mini fruit soaps from The Body Shop all mixed up together in my stocking (banana, strawberry, lemon and apple). A basket with wood shavings and Body Shop cucumber toner, grapefruit shampoo, bath pearls and morello cherry lip balm on top covered with cellophane was the ultimate present. And a Cosmetics To Go bath bomb (in the days that they were an absolute novelty - in fact I think CtG were the first ones to make them!) wrapped in iridescent cellophane that was honestly like nothing I had ever seen before. One Christmas in the early 90s I got a glass bottle of their Neroli hair perfume and was completely ecstatic.

Some other actual early 90s Christmas gifts I remember: a pair of heavy silver Celtic-style earrings from Oasis. Cassette tapes of REM’s Green and Automatic for the People; Madonna’s Immaculate Collection; Tori Amos’s Under the Pink. A gold beaded costume jewellery cross necklace made of iridescent dark metallic beads, very Madonna/goth, which I was later devastated to break in a cafe by accident (beads everywhere). I used to get a lot of book tokens, I think. And by then I was doing my siblings’ stockings as my mum had gone back to work and didn’t have time. I remember getting myself the Christmas issue of Cosmo for my own stocking every year, which I enormously looked forward to reading.

A v bougie little gift shop near me has started selling bath pearls again - so nostalgic! Mind you I never remember actually using them, only leaving them in gift sets proudly displayed in my bedroom for years until they went soft and dented 😆

Lolo balls had a revival only a few years ago. My DD had one around age 7-8! She wasn’t as obsessed by hers as I was by mine in the late 80s though!

Dyra · 23/12/2024 00:43

I vividly remember the Christmas my brother and I got a Gameboy Colour each with a Pokémon game. Red for him, Blue for me. Spent a good hour or two trading the starters over our cable so we each had a Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle to start our adventure with. One of the best Christmases ever.

The year after we got a Nintendo 64 between the 4 of us. Four way Mario Kart was brutal.

Sooo envious of your spy stuff, I was obsessed with Harriet too! Only had a b&w composition notebook though.

Cosmetics to go were just fabulous. I got a load of their stuff one early 90s Christmas and it was the best ever, but apparently they messed up my mum’s order so badly that she refused to ever use them again. I remember that exact bath bomb in the iridescent cellophane. I think it was supposed to smell of champagne. Bath bombs we’re so completely exciting after so many years of receiving those horrible granny smelling bath cubes that stank and didn’t dissolve properly in water, leaving bits of grit stuck to your bum in the bath. I’ve just remembered bath salts too - in pretty pastel colours in glass jars.

I was a pre teen/teen in the early to mid nineties so my gifts were more like a hifi, cds etc. I got a nintendo NES 90/91, so exciting! I got a tv for my room, some random jewellery once, videos. I wasn’t really into makeup to later teens but it was v basic and i didn’t get it for xmas. Calenders and stationery I got some heated rollers once. I remeber getting money as i got older.

We were a certain budget so as a teen it didn’t stretch far and i did miss the sack of gifts in the sofa. But we didn’t really have much money but i always got something i really wanted. Loved our xmas back then. House decorated in foil decs, extra food, time off school.

I remember “shell suits” were the rage in 1990
and having one for a Christmas present. You could hear the rustling with anyone walking wearing a shell suit

AppleKatie · 23/12/2024 06:08

Sylvanian family stuff
bath pearls
spice girls tape
dream phone
game boy
sleeping bag (!)
massive bars of chocolate
impulse sprays
now compilation CDs
hifi

not all in the same year but these are things that stand out.
