Cheesy “Guilty pleasure” Christmas films 2024

What Hallmark style Christmas films have you watched so far?

Channel 5 is showing them consistently now, and i’ve had the channels “Great Christmas” and “Christmas 24” on, non stop.

I watched “Christmas in Wolf Creek” the other day, it was on Christmas 24. Painfully cheesy story about a hot rancher and his girlfriend trying to make it work when they want different things. Throw in a runaway reindeer and the threat of the Town Christmas pageant not going ahead and you had a gripping storyline.

“Hot Frosty” which is new to Netflix is on my list, starring the Hallmark Queen of Christmas herself, Lacey Chabert.

PS - Why is she Christmassing on Netflix when she’s Hallmark royalty?

Personally I'm a museum bore, but some of my happiest memories with my dds have been watching Christmas made for tv films.

Talisin · 17/11/2024 17:10

I have just watched Hot Frosty on Netflix and wish to declare it a new Christmas Classic! Also, the Sheriff needs his own spin-off.

SerafinasGoose · 17/11/2024 18:56

I nominate 'Eight Women'. Like a Christmas game of Cluedo - comedic, farcical and so much fun!

National Lampoons is a fixture here every December.

It's the season to be really silly for me!

I spent the last three afternoons watching A Christmas Prince, and the two sequels - A Royal Wedding and The Royal Baby. Definite guilty pleasure!

My 15 yo DS loves those films!!

A young man of very good taste, @TwigTheWonderKid!

Just watched my first one, " Christmas A La Mode" on ITV X

I get as much pleasure from the cheesy Hallmark soft focussed ones as I do the classics.

This is a classic of it's genre :

As a rule , anything with Lacey Chabert and Danica McKellar in it are worth watching

Christmas a la Mode (TV Movie 2019) ⭐ 6.4 | Drama, Romance

1h 27m | TV-PG

I can never remember which ones I have watched as I love the cheesy ones, but just thoroughly enjoyed An Eclectic Christmas on Prime.

Merrow · 18/11/2024 11:20

I watched Hot Frosty last night, highly recommend! DP has a much lower tolerance for Christmas and declared it one of their favourites.

There’s a new one on tomorrow that I’m recording. It’s called “Christmas at Plumhill Manor” and it’s set in the English Countryside.
It’s on Great Christmas.

I recorded and watched this yesterday. Was one of the better 'American goes to the UK and saves the day' ones, without too many cliches and bad accents. (Not saying there weren't any). Several of the boxes ticked. Usual '20 minutes before the end misunderstanding' happened.

I quite enjoyed it . (I do have a low bar though, so that might not be saying much Grin).
Xmas Grin

Lacey Chabert is the Queen of Christmas! I’ve watched her in Haul out the Holly: Lit up which is the 2nd film. Amazingly cheesy and full of Christmas competition only to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

The Spirit of Christmas which is a bit of a ghost story. A guy was murdered on Christmas Eve and comes back for Christmas every year and ‘haunts’ the house but the property appraiser trying to sell the place tries to help I’m discover who killed him and why. Love and magic ensue.

Sister Swap Christmas in the City and Hometown Christmas are a must watch for me each year. I love how the films show each sisters journey.

GettingStuffed · 18/11/2024 16:30

I'm surprised not to see the Mrs Miracle ones on the list.
I've just watched Fred Claus and I'm currently watching Scrooge the animated version.
There loads on my5

I seem to have mostly gone through the Netflix ones , one of the joys of being retired.

VillageFete · 18/11/2024 22:30

Currently watching “The Mistletoe Secret”
I’ve baulked multiple times so far. It’s ridiculously syrupy sweet. It “stars” Tyler Hynes, you’ll have seen him in a few of these. He always seems too cool for them.

Anyway; it’s bloody great.

Just checked, Danica McKellar has starred in TWELVE different Christmas films, including the imperious ' Crown for Christmas' ....however..

Lacey Chabert has starred in over THIRTY !!

VillageFete · 19/11/2024 14:48

@Alltheunreadbooks Lacey is the official Queen of Christmas, although, I imagine Candace Cameron Bure gives her a run for her money?

Are all of Lacey Chabert's available in the UK? I wonder if I can get DP to commit to a marathon...

IDontLikePinaColadas · 21/11/2024 15:49

I have just seen the trailer for The Merry Gentlemen on Netflix... think Hallmark meets Magic Mike. I feel this might combine a couple of film genres my DP would hate but I would very much enjoy...!

52crumblesofautumn · 21/11/2024 16:50

Enjoyed 'a knight before Christmas' and lovehard so far thus week! And still plenty of Christmas film watching weeks to go!!

Ok I feel I watched this so no-one else has to.... if you fancy seeing some seriously sculpted abs, then by all means watch away, but for that feel-good-Hallmark-movie-hit we all crave there are definitely better options!

52crumblesofautumn · 21/11/2024 17:50

Ahem, there are some nice abs in a knight before Christmas too! Perhaps not quite as many sadly.

Surviving Christmas is great fun - Ben Affleck, Christina Applegate, Catherine O'Hara, James Gandolfini and Jennifer something (the original female junior doctor from House)...

Ben Affleck is a lonely millionaire who pays the (unhappy) family living at his childhood home to pretend he's their son for Christmas, including having to recereate his old family traditions. Comedy and romance ensues... I watch it every year.

My fave is last Christmas - I'm saving it for an afternoon when I know I won't be interrupted, and when I have a box of minI stollen and mulled wine to snack on!

Oh so is mine, I've watched it numerous times and will do so again this year. Extraordinary film and so pretty!

HermioneWeasley · 15/11/2024 13:51

Haven’t watched it yet this year but the Brooke Shield “a castle for Christmas” is an excellent example of the genre

I hated it! And she should never wear a ball gown

VillageFete · 16/11/2024 13:16

@StMarie4me Desperately sorry to hear this. I lost my best friend to cancer too. 6 year’s this December.

It’s a cracking film, and I hope it brings you some comfort as you watch and remember her.

I’m too busy too have a festive cheese fest today 🙄 But it’s on the cards tomorrow.

I took my friend to see it in the cinema, holding my breath as she'd lost her adult son but knowing that it was right to take her, and it was. It moved and comforted her so much

VillageFete · 22/11/2024 13:47

@Abracadabra12345 Oh this must have been an unbelievably difficult time for your friend 😔 It will of course still be terribly painful and difficult. I’m so glad it brought her comfort. It’s a great film.
