Feeling quite delighted to have most of the dc’s shopping done and under €500 so far! I can tend to go crazy at Christmas 😬

I have spent €436 so far. And I have bought

DD11
Jumper
Nike leggings
Sephora goodies -bath bombs, lip gloss, hair oil, travel containers.
Initialled Glass cup
Small panda bag for accessories
Panda Teddy
Sanitary wear bag
Slushy maker
New York jigsaw
Eiffel Tower puzzle
Socks
MGA miniverse set
Full length Mirror for her bedroom
clothes rail for her bedroom
Small panda ornament
Panda hair towel
Panda face mitt
Nintendo sports game
Nintendo sports accessory pack

DS9
Hoody
Lion teddy
Elephant teddy
Football pen Holder
Vbucks voucher
Fidget popper game
Darts board

I still have a good bit to get for DS though he is getting a PlayStation (second hand) and a game and couple of Lego sets.

DD is pretty much done I might pop into primark and get some baskets for the bottom shelf of the clothes rail and pjs etc

Have you totalled your spend so far?

Yes euros, I’m in Ireland. Expensive here…hence being delighted šŸ˜‚

Yeah you've done well so far!

WhatsInTheRug · 20/10/2024 17:08

Consumerism!?

Of course. What are people supposed to be giving? Everything home made and 'crafts'?

purplebeansprouts · 20/10/2024 17:08

SabreIsMyFave · 20/10/2024 17:07

Around £180 on each child? You think that's LOADS?

Yes I do. For one Christmas for one set of gifts. I guess it depends if they get gifts from anyone else.

Username19781209 · 20/10/2024 17:09

I've done all of mine too.
God I can't think of anything I'd like less than somebody to craft me something made out of old shite for Christmas just don't bother.
I see adverts for these craft Fairs and think god I hope I don't get anything from there!

Dotto · 20/10/2024 17:10

Total spend £0. We spend about £40 max on each other including the kids. Can't bear toot and waste, we have most things we need.

SabreIsMyFave · 20/10/2024 17:10

Ā£180 per child is not a lot in the world I am in. (For Christmas.)

I bet the posters saying this think nothing of spending a 4-figure sum on a phone. Or £500 on a gym membership.

Ignore the miseries and beraters @Positivenancy

I would report your thread though (via your first post) and ask MN to move it to the Christmas board. Too many salty Scrooges on here.

' The sanitary wear bag is cute and she loves that kind of stuff! She doesn’t NEED it yet but she’s 11 so she probably will at some point.'

please do not give what could be considered an essential item for Christmas

and she may be highly embarrassed to receive it at Christmas in public - in front of her father and / or in front of her brother.

have you been shopping with her to buy sanitary products yet ?
if so give her this item now and say you saw it and thought it was ' cute ' and she could put it away / aside for later use
if not, say to her that you are going shopping for these items and this is something to start her off.

Ah only at Christmas and birthdays to be fair

You're not necessarily doing your kids a favour by getting them so many individual gifts.

I know they're older than the kids in this study, but it's been clearly proven that too many toys can hold kids back.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/singletons/201712/study-underscores-why-fewer-toys-is-the-better-option

Surely spending the money on quality time and a special day out or whatever would be ultimately more fulfilling?

But I do admit that it's hardly the end of the world, everyone parents differently. I wouldn't say anything in the usual run of the things, but you did post in AIBU.

Study Underscores Why Fewer Toys Is the Better Option

Parents may be giving their young children too many toys. In terms of development and creativity, less is more. Here's why.

I've not bought much yet.

For my son I've bought a chain and a hoodie and for my daughter, I've bought a chain, bracelet and blanket so far. Those came to around £350. Lots left to buy!

CortieTat · 20/10/2024 17:17

Is rampant consumerism something to brag about?

We get and give one thing each, often hand me downs (I got a pendant that’s been in the family for a long time from my mum last year). The only extra thing I buy for everyone is a board game that we all get choose beforehand and then play together. Choosing the game is a bit of a social thing as we make lists and bargain for ages before the decision is made.

WhatsInTheRug · 20/10/2024 17:20

Oh op the judging!! You've got to laugh at these silly mumsnetters!

RedCedars · 20/10/2024 17:21

The mirror and the clothes rail are not Christmas presents. They’re things you should provide as standard - it’s like someone getting you a plug extension lead as a gift.

Normallynumb · 20/10/2024 17:21

You've done really well for your budget and in good time saving the mad rush and crowds as December draws closer
I have done exactly the same this year.
My DS's are adults now so slightly different but I set a budget of £100 each in my head and have had time to browse and order with the best prices
I have used PayPal pay in 3 to budget the costs which I will pay with my PIP each month which works for me.
I have accrued Asda reward/ Tesco clubcard points for food which I will buy Christmas week with my son

WhatsInTheRug · 20/10/2024 17:21

@CortieTat but that's YOU and YOUR choice for your family

This is the op CHOICE

Everyone is different

CherubEarrings · 20/10/2024 17:22

Very distasteful post considering there is a cost of living crisis for a lot of people.

WhatsInTheRug · 20/10/2024 17:23

@Sugarcoldturkey no

Op is doing it HER way not YOURS

It's up to her and her family, she is doing NOTHING wrong.

LazyOnSunday · 20/10/2024 17:23

Oh god, please ask to move this to the Christmas topic OP, where hopefully the people who don't want to talk about what they have bought their children stay away from. Ffs.

Positivenancy · 20/10/2024 17:23

Why is Christmas shopping in October something to be proud of?

Being organised, getting stuff done, what’s not to be proud and delighted about? I like to chill in dec and not panic

Maybe....just maybe....her Dd has ASKED for these items

Now there's a thought eh!?

ByMerryKoala · 20/10/2024 17:24

Bloody hell, op. If you start wrapping now you might be done by Christmas.

I thought this section of MN is specifically designed for judging? People ask if they are being reasonable and expect an answer.

There's going to be a lot more like this soon

Blanketyre · 20/10/2024 17:25

That seems a huge amount of tat, but mine are older so things are smaller but more expensive.

Yeah we will do things too. Ice skating, light show, days out, the panto (hopefully). We will do plenty to be fair.
