I actually have to get a birthday present for a niece whose birthday is the week after Christmas ( and obviously Christmas).
For one I can give money but it doesn't seem right for both being close together .

Shes posh, public school, bright but working as she likes the money and opportunities (lots of connections).

Its very tricky. Best gift was Ray Bans for her 16th ( TK Maxx bargain).

Any suggestions that won't break me?

Baffling! I don’t know a single person, young adult or mature, who has attended any public school (even the best known in the country) who isn’t involved in some sort of work - whether employed or self employed, city or farm …

But I am laughing at the £20 silver earrings suggestion …

And you may laugh at my suggestion of whichever slim, newly published volume of poetry seems most unlikely. Something prizewinning from Faber or Carcanet.

I assumed that meant not at university, but I don't know

JadedFilly · 02/10/2024 16:34

Ah! Maybe …

I’d check out websites like Rydale that do gifts for horse riders. Or Go Outdoors aswell

Blanketyre · 02/10/2024 17:25

Not the horsey things suggested here, and I say that as a mum to a horsey ex private school girl.

Dior lip oil and laniege balms are popular now!

Good shout and if you go for Dior you can get it engraved on the website.

This is a good idea.

Gardendiary · 02/10/2024 17:35

Dior lip oil is over £30 so a bit over the budget. I have a similar advantaged young person in my life so lurking for inspiration.

If she rides how about some nice long riding socks?

Spacemasks (individually wrapped self-heating masks)

Does it have to be a brand? There are some nice personalised bracelets on not on the high street or Etsy. Or even Joma Jewellery. They often have codes too if you do a quick google

Turtle doves fingerless cashmere gloves, in a neutral colour. If you buy them when they are on special price.

I love mine. My elderly mum loves hers. My 22-year old loves hers. My sister loves her for when working on her laptop.

Putonyourredshoesanddancetheblues · 02/10/2024 18:05

She’s your niece, couldn’t you ask her/ her parents/siblings for ideas?

Can be personalised & comes with lovely packaging

MoneyAndPercentages · 02/10/2024 18:09

I'd do something classic. The White Company do some stunning smaller bits (small candles/lip balms etc) and is quite lux, or maybe fancy chocolates (Charbonel & Walker champagne truffles?)

If you know her style, browse Etsy for something unique and stylish. If she's a foodie, maybe a nice cookbook from a celebrity chef? The Stanley Tucci one and the Dishoom one are high on my list this year (or a pre-order of the Wishbone Kitchen one!)

A little over budget

The Psychology of Money book. Excellent reviews on Amazon. My friend's husband is an Independent Financial Advisor. He was very impressed with the book I gave his daughter for her 18th birthday

Jo Malone bath oil is gorgeous. I think a small bottle is about £18 but it lasts forever. I ask for it every Xmas.

hby9628 · 02/10/2024 18:17

Just browsing Katie Loxton there's loads of lovely bits on there. Shouldn't have looked

This website has some nice horsey jewellery and this one is in your budget.

Have ordered from them and they are really lovely items

Please not a candle or hand cream, I know no one who uses hand cream (evidenced by the dozens donated to every raffle and lucky dip!) and most people who use candles want cheaper than £20 ones.

Think about what she's doing day to day - eg does she travel for work then a travel jewellery roll (£20 gets you one)

I use handcream and only have nice candles that are easily £40z 🤣

OP Cowshed sets are nice too.

Why would most people want a cheaper candle..? And I use handcream, even my 22-year old ds does.

Summer Fridays lip balm? Think it’s about £24.
