Light-hearted - obviously. But getting to that tetchy stage where you realise you're missing something you really like.

No fresh sage - partner forget to get during the Big Shop yesterday.

I've realised I haven't got coleslaw, and I am doing a large ham with salad and crusty bread tomorrow teatime. I bloody love coleslaw with ham.

I can't be bothered to fight my way round the shops for some, however.

gotomomo · 23/12/2023 15:19

I forgot to make the Christmas cake!

Oh well, means I've got the ingredients for the simnel cake already

Hobbesmanc · 23/12/2023 15:19

We did our big shop early yesterday. Went to the big M and S and Sainsbury's. No crème fraiche. No sausage meat. No fresh stock.

But all in the little Coop. So crisis averted.

ActuallyChristmas · 23/12/2023 15:22

I managed to get some in the end, but felt that lebkuchen were in short supply this year. Cumberland rum butter had to be purchased on Amazon as I didn’t see it in the deli or garden centre

Badtasteflump · 23/12/2023 15:22

Bread sauce 😔. Going to have to make it from scratch now which will be another load of faff I don't need.

Greekgreens · 23/12/2023 15:25

Only small chickens left in Sainsbury’s yesterday so I had to walk to Waitrose who had plenty of all sizes. A small wouldn’t have fed six no matter how hard I tired.

Oxygen.

The private company the Tories commissioned to take over oxygen delivery for the NHS have decided they are going to close over the holiday period leaving my partner without any way to actually breathe the next few days.

Instead of wrapping presents and relaxing I now have to spend this weekend on the phone to various emergency lines trying to find a workable solution to keep my partner alive so a private company can save some cash not paying overtime for bank holidays.

Oh my Gods, that is appalling. I have no words, I am so sorry you and your partner are going through this.

Make it with shredded raw sprouts instead of white cabbage, grated carrots, chopped apple and coleslaw. Its really easy and much nicer than bought.

Do I win the prize for most MN answer ever?

hellomi · 23/12/2023 15:33

Bottled water for the coffee machine 😆 Supermarket had none at all this morning! Tap water is no good because the water is ridiculously hard here and it'll knacker the machine in no time.

psuedocream3 · 23/12/2023 15:34

@DoAWheelie That is horrendous! I truly hope you manage to find a solution, quickly and that you can have a peaceful Christmas.

Cheese, crackers, dessert, alcohol, kids drinks, something for breakfast, cards, batteries, gravy, bread sauce, red cabbage and probably a dozen other things. Luckily I am not bothered, I'm sure we will manage.

Oh my god. I’m so sorry.

And apologies for answering the OP with my trivia.

I hope you can do what is needful @DoAWheelie I think I’ve now read “the most shocking post” (to quite a recent thread) on MN.

We are overall the 8th wealthiest country in the world. You shouldn’t have to do this so your partner can stay alive. Flowers

I’ve been to 4 different shops and can’t get any flat mushrooms to go with a steak tomorrow evening. I also haven’t bought a dessert yet. I’m going to end up with cheesecake from Lidl, I know it.

I actually managed to get two packs of this on Wednesday and I was surprised as it had been out of stock online. I didn't fancy making it from scratch.

Celeriac was the thing I was struggling to find. Had been to Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Lidl and couldn't find it but a friend got me one from a local farm shop today.

We don't have a traditional dinner if that's not obvious. 🤣

Slightly missing the point of the thread but we also have hard water and we just descale our machine every few months
Our last espresso gaggia classic lasted 14 years of multi daily uses doing this.

I've just got home without the squirty cream for the Xmas eve hot chocolate, the limes for the gin, the mini sausages and the butter.

So it's back to Waitrose for me.

PubicZirconia · 23/12/2023 15:42

A pack of UNO cards.😭My eldest asked for barely anything this year and he suddenly did just as I have left for my last shop.

Hahaha...... I got DD to buy some down in Exeter as none in Guildford. She got the last two packets!

KnittedCardi · 23/12/2023 15:46

I couldn't get any pork stuffing or balls or similar anywhere. Waitrose delivery bereft, Waitrose dhop empty, no pigs in blankets either!!! Popped into Cook, they had no stuffing either, but did have pigs in blankets. Phew. WSitrose stripped of all things Xmas, ridiculous.....

Alakaza · 23/12/2023 15:47

@DoAWheelie that is disgraceful! I hope it gets sorted quickly without too much stress to you and you both have a lovely Christmas Flowers

Got a Tesco delivery coming tonight… they’ve removed the red cabbage, biscuits for cheese, goose fat roasties and almond croissants because they are “unavailable “ since I placed the order over a month ago 😡
gonna have to go to the shop again!

My shop is due at 8pm and I just know there'll be loads of substitutions

PossumintheHouse · 23/12/2023 15:50

There is an annoying shortage of Dijon mustard in my hometown. I am grumpy.

MrsMiddleMother · 23/12/2023 15:51

Bucks fizz! I've been going on about how much I want to have a glass Christmas morning for the first time in years and forgot to get it Thursday during the big shop. Luckily I work in a supermarket so will pick some up after my shift

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 23/12/2023 15:51

Halfway through making eggnog and realised I have no vanilla in any form.
But, there was a tin of dulce de leche in the cupboard so a few dollops of that went in instead.
It's actually much nicer this year!

RubiesAndRaindrops · 23/12/2023 15:53

I was going to roast a chicken instead of turkey, I popped into the supermarket today, all the chickens they had expire tomorrow which is no good. I'll try again tomorrow & if no joy I guess I'll just get a couple of breasts & some thighs or legs or something. It's not the end of the world though so long as we get something to eat!
