Light-hearted - obviously. But getting to that tetchy stage where you realise you're missing something you really like.

No fresh sage - partner forget to get during the Big Shop yesterday.

Nothing I don’t think but to be honest at this stage I really don’t care! It’s only DH, DS and I for Christmas Day and we are going to our friends next door for Boxing Day. It’s a roast dinner for three. Why we are getting so worked up about it all I don’t know but we are! Madness.

Nellieinthebarn · 23/12/2023 14:28

Nothing, I am sure I have forgotten something, but at this stage I don't care. There is no way I'm braving the shops today, and if anything is missing they can either eat something else or go without.

safetycat · 23/12/2023 14:30

DH only managed to get double cream from M&S (rather than the naice dairy) and I've had several pots from them just wouldn't whip up so I'm preemptively shooting it/him dark looks.

FlyingCherub · 23/12/2023 14:34

We didn't have any stuffing in our food shop, sigh. They subbed it with plain sausagement so now I either need to get a pack of stuffing to add to it for flavour or faddle about making it from scratch. Neither idea is leaving me enthused.....

CactusPat · 23/12/2023 14:35

My mum has never lived down forgetting pigs in blankets and yorkshires one year 😬

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 23/12/2023 14:38

DD and I went to ice the cream cake yesterday and realised we needed more icing sugar. We had to go to three shops but we did find some. So that was a near miss!

When I was at school I worked in a supermarket and one of the managers there said it never really felt like Christmas until he'd been shouted at by someone for "ruining Christmas" because they'd waited until Christmas Eve to try and buy a turkey or something, and had found it sold out.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 23/12/2023 14:38

Ice the cream cake? Don't know what I was talking about there. Just ice the cake

SwedishEdith · 23/12/2023 14:40

I remember realising we had no satsumas one Christmas Eve at about 6 in the evening. Did manage to get them from the local Co-op.

I've forgotten to get chocolate oranges this year. Kept thinking that wasn't sure if I'd already bought them. I hadn't.

Got a Tesco delivery coming tonight… they’ve removed the red cabbage, biscuits for cheese, goose fat roasties and almond croissants because they are “unavailable “ since I placed the order over a month ago 😡
gonna have to go to the shop again!

I have loads in my garden if you're in Gloucestershire!

I'm not, sadly, but maybe we need to just keep an eye on people's gardens. Have snaffled sprigs of rosemary in the past that way

Dh has just point blank refused to let me buy a Yule log. His grounds are that we are going out for lunch and thereafter we've got enough food to sink a ship anyway. But now all I want is a yuke log so I feel fairly sure one will be in our fridge by this time tomorrow Grin

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 23/12/2023 14:45

Oh my word! Is it Christmas already?

I’ll need a tree, a turkey, presents…

Local shops here I come.

Alakaza · 23/12/2023 14:49

Quite a lot 😂 all the fresh food, main shop was due today but it’s been cancelled due to weather and snow gates have been shut, I have all the freezer stuff and some freezer back ups (freezer roasties etc) that I’d bought or made though in case this happened, so it’s not great but not awful.

My stuffing consists of a packet of stuffing made up with hot water, mixed together with sausagemeat then baked. Everyone loves it

Wow, where are you with snow?

That's the other annoying thing, it's so mild so getting too warm walking round the shops.

I'm at work tonight in our local supermarket. Am looking forward to general customer ire about the lack of (variously) salad items, part-baked bread, fresh stuffing and chickens.

I may or may not be too nice to point out that we will have been open since 7am, and if you think you're going to score some nice discounts by waiting to do your food shop until 7pm, you're going to find we've sold out of much stuff.

Then I will fight someone to the death for the last cucumber.

Up in Caithness!

AdaColeman · 23/12/2023 14:59

No fresh tarragon, they've sent oregano instead. So that's my chicken à l'Estragon crossed off the menu.

@safetycat You could try adding a little icing sugar to your double cream to help it whip, sometimes when the kitchen is very warm you can get that problem with cream.

bearsbeets2 · 23/12/2023 15:07

No decent Buck’s Fizz near me! Been to two shops and only the cheaper bottles left. I could make my own but I cba, DP and I don’t drink but we do enjoy a couple bottles of Buck’s Fizz at Christmas!

Extra large sized tin foil .. can I hope I can manage with normal sized wrapped round ... haven't got a ginormous Turkey so sure it will be OK.

Oh bollocks....tin foil. Now I'm hoping I have enough normal sized tinfoil to double it up. I refuse to go to the co-op.

SwedishEdith · 23/12/2023 15:14

You've reminded me we have no kitchen roll.

Oxygen.

The private company the Tories commissioned to take over oxygen delivery for the NHS have decided they are going to close over the holiday period leaving my partner without any way to actually breathe the next few days.

Instead of wrapping presents and relaxing I now have to spend this weekend on the phone to various emergency lines trying to find a workable solution to keep my partner alive so a private company can save some cash not paying overtime for bank holidays.
