I'm hosting Christmas this year with both sides of our family attending. I've been planning the menu for Christmas lunch and never realised before how many options there are for dessert! No idea how I'm going to make the decision.... So, I'm curious to know, what do you have for dessert after your Christmas lunch / dinner?

Christmas Pudding
Yule Log
Mince Pies
Traditional Christmas Cake
Alternative Christmas Cake (not fruit cake!)
Something else - let me know what you have!

If you have something else - let me know what you go for as I'm looking for some inspo 😇

I make a variation on the Italian Vin Santo e Cantuccini (liqueur and biscotti).
In advance, take individual ice cream dishes, put 4 biscuits in each and drizzle them with the vin santo, to soak. Use orange juice for children. Then just before serving put a scoop of good vanilla or rum’n’raisin ice cream, sprinkle with the same crushed biscuits and pour over some more vin santo, orange juice OR espresso coffee to make an affogato.
A Pandoro sliced horizontally and replaced in a spiral shape, sandwiched with buttercream (I use mascarpone) and dusted with icing sugar makes a pretty Christmas Tree centrepiece.

Home made chocolate cheesecake. Yum

Autumndays22 · 07/12/2023 23:33

Pavlova wreath, brownies, gingerbread, token mince pies / Christmas pudding (nobody chooses this), toffee pecan or fruit roulade. This year After Eight tart too

goldennavy · 08/12/2023 08:38

I'm doing two pavlova wreaths. One with cream and fruit, the other with Baileys cream and chocolate.
Plus a Christmas Pudding with hot brandy sauce.

I don't eat desserts, never really seen the point of them.

How sad.

Peridot1 · 08/12/2023 08:47

Thanks @MonkeyPuddle. Will give it a try.

How sad.

There nothing "sad" about not having a sweet tooth!

I'm 'meh' about puddings as well.

I've occasionally made a white chocolate mousse or a trifle at Christmas, but usually don't bother. We do however have (though I say it myself) an amazing cheese mountain

Definitely not sad to not have a sweet tooth.

But very sad to post on a thread asking for ideas for a dessert for Christmas that you cannot see the point in desserts.

FiveShelties · 08/12/2023 08:54

@MonkeyPuddle that is Christmas Day's dessert sorted, thanks very much.

There's a "something else" option, and I think it's fine to use that to say you don't really like any, without being ticked off for it.

Cheese isn't really a dessert - should I await similar chastisement for posting that I prefer it to any sweet pudding Xmas Grin

FiveShelties · 08/12/2023 09:05

@AuntieStella you were not ticked off, my original comment was to another poster. 🙄

AllRoadsLeadHome · 08/12/2023 09:12

We usually have a variety to suit everyone. This year is,

Christmas pudding
Yule log
Vegan Gingerbread cheesecake
Mince pies
Ice cream, vegan and dairy

My apologies for lack of clarity

I was commenting on what I read as the ticking off of another poster, and of course this subsequent post is definitely at me, and suggesting I'm deficient.

I apologise for my part in a brief derailment of the thread, and will say no more.

FiveShelties · 08/12/2023 09:22

Deficient??? @AuntieStella I am sorry you are taking offence where none was meant, but your choice. Merry Christmas.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/12/2023 09:49

Christmas pudding, and I usually make a Christmas Dried Fruit compote (Delia) which can be made in advance and tastes very Christmassy.

And a cheeseboard, plus grapes, satsumas, etc.
In dh’s family they always had trifle as well as 🎄pud but I don’t like it and since he’s never going to make it (his father used to do that) we’ve never had it.

ExpensiveDecorations · 08/12/2023 10:09

Our problem is that we all like totally different puddings. I can’t bear trifle, or tiramisu or anything boozy or cold-custardy. The DCs don’t like chocolate. One person has a cow’s milk allergy. But Christmas pudding and / or cake and / or ice cream keeps everyone happy.

evilharpy · 08/12/2023 10:30

A family member owns a bakery and last year they made sticky toffee puddings to order for Christmas. We got one and it was amazing, so we're doing the same this year.

We like different things but it can usually be sorted by those of us who like Christmas pudding having that and anyone else gets Vienetta.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/12/2023 10:57

Pavlova none of our family can fancy a hefty pudding after a big main course

Broodywuz · 08/12/2023 12:12

Ice cream, fun sprinkles, sauces etc for the kids. Then 1 hot and 1 cold pudding, usually sticky toffee and cheesecake or pavlova

Jins · 08/12/2023 13:32

Christmas pud. The DSs don’t like it so they do without and get stuck into the red velvet cake I make as an alternative to Christmas cake. Once upon a time when the older family members were around I used to faff about with alternative options like chocolate mousse or trifle but nobody really likes trifle in our house so there’s no point making it nowadays.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/12/2023 19:09

Always a 🎄pud, lit up with a sprig of holly on top, lights off as it’s brought to the table. Fruit salad for any weirdo who doesn’t like my lovely pud.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 19/12/2023 21:51

Trifle and Christmas pudding options , according to individual preference. Christmas cake is available over the week- fruit but otherwise lower in sugar .

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/12/2023 07:58

Christmas Pudding with brandy butter and/or custard
Fruit salad
Somthing dairy free... planning jellies this year
When the DC were small we would have meringues.
Cake and mince pies are for in front of the tv later.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 20/12/2023 08:50

We're skipping sweet dessert this year and having all the cheeses.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 24/12/2023 12:24

This year we’re having…

Chocolate log
Mint/choc cheesecake
Sticky toffee pudding
traditional Christmas cake &mince pies
Cranachan pavlova
