I'm hosting Christmas this year with both sides of our family attending. I've been planning the menu for Christmas lunch and never realised before how many options there are for dessert! No idea how I'm going to make the decision.... So, I'm curious to know, what do you have for dessert after your Christmas lunch / dinner?

Christmas Pudding
Yule Log
Mince Pies
Traditional Christmas Cake
Alternative Christmas Cake (not fruit cake!)
Something else - let me know what you have!

If you have something else - let me know what you go for as I'm looking for some inspo 😇

Chambord trifle

I am in the US so Brit Xmas desserts are very expensive and not the most popular with everyone here. This year I have decided to do a dessert of pears poached in spiced red wine with crème anglaise. I make the pears in my instant pot and this dish can be made ahead of time too. Delicious and not too heavy as we had heavy desserts with our Thanksgiving meal ( Pumpkin pie and Apple Pie)

@MonkeyPuddle - that sounds really nice. Fresh mandarins? Do you have a recipe?

@CalamityA - the marmalade and chocolate panettone sounds really good too.

No recipe as such but bash up a packet of ginger nut biscuits, so that they’re in broken bits of about 1-2cm. Layer of these in a large glass bowl (like a trifle sized one) with some chopped stem ginger, then a layer of tinned mandarins (separate the juice) and pour over some of the juice and then a layer of 50:50 whipped cream mixed with Greek yogurt. Then repeat the layers until the bowl if full. Pop it in the fridge overnight and then serve. The biscuit layer goes like a cheesecake base from the mandarins. Take about 10 mins to knock up and we absolutely inhale it.

I don't eat desserts, never really seen the point of them.

Thanks for your valuable input.

The point of them is that they taste nice!

My son buys ''original'' dessert from M+S - which are always beautiful and delicious surprises - something cold.

gotomomo · 07/12/2023 17:59

Christmas pudding and a lighter cold option like roulade

mamaduckbone · 07/12/2023 18:04

Christmas pudding, or sticky toffee pudding for those that don't like it.

We have mince pies, Christmas cake, gingerbread etc at other times over Christmas rather than for dessert.

Oh, and MIL will make a Boxing Day trifle 😍😍😍😍

I’ve just asked my husband what he’d like for Christmas dessert, he’s asked for banoffee pie! That makes things easy for me! 🤩

Princessvelour · 07/12/2023 18:10

I like trifle

But we're planning on buying a vienetta this year (kids will love it and I love the retro kitsch)

Mumaway · 07/12/2023 18:11

There always a Xmas pud but it rarely gets eaten on Xmas day, because the alternative is chocolate hazelnut meringue cake with cream and choc ganache in the middle and crumbled flakes on the top. Yum!! The pud is fried up the next day.

WellWillWoll · 07/12/2023 18:26

I always make a fruity pavlova and profiteroles with chocolate sauce. Never have Christmas pudding as nobody likes it!

Christmasss · 07/12/2023 18:37

We have a little buffet of Yule log, mince pies, some sort of Madeira cake with Christmas decorations that my middle DC chooses, cheese/crackers, cream, probably something else chocolaty or a cheese cake and a mini Christmas pudding for me. This is either about three hours after Christmas lunch or after a turkey sandwich in the evening depending on the timings on the day.

Blanketpolicy · 07/12/2023 18:41

We aren't fussed with Christmas pudding so having a choice of -

M&S Chocolate pine cones
M&S Triple Yule log
Trifle

Trifle will be a proper 1980s one WITH jelly, swiss roll, birds custard, tinned fruit and a crumbled flake on top! There are fancier, and undeniably better tasting trifles out there, but this has too many Christmas memories not to have it! And it looks lovely in my late mums cut glass trifle bowl 🤣

unsync · 07/12/2023 18:46

Cake and mince pies are for tea. Pudding for lunch with an apple tart for the wierdos who don't eat pud.

SkyFullofStars1975 · 07/12/2023 18:50

We have a homemade cheesecake, mince pies and cream/ice cream, yule log and ice cream and it's now a family tradition to have a Colin the Caterpillar christmas version too.

Aug12 · 07/12/2023 18:50

This years choices are Trifle or Sticky toffee pud

PixiePirate · 07/12/2023 18:50

A choice of 2: homemade yule log with cream or shop bought Christmas pudding. There’s usually homemade iced (fruit) Christmas cake and mince pies kicking around too.

Wishthiswasntthecase · 07/12/2023 18:53

Trifle. Always trifle

livingthegoodlife · 07/12/2023 18:58

another vote for trifle

madmumofteens · 07/12/2023 19:26

Key lime pie and pavlova to use up the egg whites ☺️

Dipsomaniax · 07/12/2023 19:31

Brown Bread ice Cream with butterscotch sauce or raspberry coulis (a choice)

But I might make a chocolate roulade (with mousse) for one of the shoulder days
