Good evening all. Thanks for the many bargains! A different question here but so many of you are so knowledgeable about so many things so wondering if someone could help. 17 yo DS has started his own ‘event’, hiring venues and DJing/hiring other DJs etc. He had his second one last night and borrowed a sum up reader from our neighbour to use. I’d like to buy him his own for Christmas but have NO clue! Does anyone know? Are any of these ok? Any idea of which and why? Thanks so much in advance!

Can anyone recommend a gift for my great uncle please, he’s in his 70s and I don’t know him very well. All I know is that he enjoys reading thrillers and crime novels. I’ve got him a book voucher in the past but got the feeling that he was disappointed and would’ve preferred an actual gift, it’s difficult with books though as he might have already read whatever I buy. Other things I’ve bought and have gone down well previously are things like hat, gloves, scarf, socks. Any ideas?

I’d recommend The Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes. It’s quite new out - author previously wrote I am Pilgrim. Excellent fast paced thriller.

@Woolabaloo looks like you are definitely on the right track 🙂

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz I used all the tricks here for a fossil purse for my mum and I felt like I had won the lottery 😂 the dopamine hit is real

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 10/12/2023 18:52

@Woolabaloo look at Square for card readers too.

We use one when we are out on volunteer events and I just have the app on my phone go connect to the reader. Readers accepts contactless and chip and pin. Easy to use.

Whichever one you choose will have as fee per transaction so maybe have a look at that info before deciding

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/12/2023 18:53

Ahh Fossil around Black Friday are excellent for deals especially with the tricks on this thread Grin

MarshmallowsOnToast · 10/12/2023 19:08

@Flubadubba and @Beckafett

Thanks will see if I can get out to either of those shops x

LiamNeesonIsADerryGirl · 10/12/2023 19:16

@Woolabaloo I use a Zettle for craft fairs, not had a problem with it so far. It has an app for your phone so you can add products/keep inventory etc. I think the charges are 2% per transaction.

I did a craft fare recently and put sum up on my phone for free. Was very easy and it took payments. This was a one off for me so did not want to buy a machine and having it on my phone was perfect.

handmademitlove · 10/12/2023 19:52

@Woolabaloo there are two main types - one is the small square, this connects using an app on a phone so needs a phone to work. It is usually around £35, but often on offer. The other option is the 3g+ version which has its own connection - this needs a SIM card adding but is then standalone.

We use the small one with our phone, which charges using usb.

handmademitlove · 10/12/2023 19:55

@Woolabaloo sorry should have said - that is using sumup! I use mine for a number of different charities, just have a different account for each one but use the same machine.

Thanks so much for your reply. That might be a better idea! As an aside can I ask, did you have to send ID to verify your account before you got your money paid out? We can’t work out if he needs to do this for a one off or if it’s only for over £5000. Thank you! Xxx

Stripedfluffysocks · 10/12/2023 20:23

I’ve never heard of it before but I’d really love to get it for a child who doesn’t really ask for anything but he’s mentioned this today

mumonthehill · 10/12/2023 20:29

Ok great, so definitely didn’t have to verify the account with a passport or driving license first? That’s amazing news if so! Thank you!

@handmademitlove Lidl had some pud in a mug sachets for 49p in various flavours yesterday. They're in the aisle of random food things that changes every week, not in the usual food aisle. Also found some Plopp sweets there 😂

minsmum · 10/12/2023 21:03

I have been asked for The Hobbit classic hard back edition but it's £22 in Waterstones and £20.84 in WH Smith but with postage any ideas how I can get it cheaper
