My dog remembered!

She had an advent calendar last year. A wooden one with dog treats in.

I was sat chatting away to her last night and I said 'it's nearly Christmas, we'll have to get your advent calendar ready!'

And as soon as she heard advent calendar she jumped up looking at me, jumped off the couch and ran to place where it was kept and looked up like it would be there!

Dogs are so smart!!

Yep. My dog recognises his own stocking and where I hide his toys for it! Sits at the cupboard door expectedly while nudging his stocking to check if it's been filled yet 🤣

That's adorable! I'll have to get her one!

Our old ddog knew what socks meant. If I picked up a pair she knew it meant she was going out. She would sit absolutely still while I got sorted and got the lead.. I never wore socks at other times... She knew the secret signal! With one of current ddogs same applies if I put a woolly hat on!

My dog knows the difference between 'indoor' and 'outdoor' clothes. If I get dressed in clothes I typically wear around the house, no reaction. If I put on clothes I wear to go out he gets excited.

ClemmyTine · 28/11/2023 09:54

My mam's dog used to have a little doll as one of his toys. The kind where you picked the string out of its back and it cried/talked. The dog used to hold it still with its paws and pull the string with its teeth.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 28/11/2023 09:57

Loving these! Have never had a dog and probably won't ever get one, but your dogs all sound great!!!

The advent calendar excitement is very cute!

KStockHERO · 28/11/2023 10:27

Every time I walk my do past our local primary school, my dog is absolutely desperate to go into the gate because once back in 2018 there was a gentleman with treats for people who brought their dogs for #dogsatpollingstations.

It happened once. Five years ago. We only walk past the school a couple of times a month but every single time she remembers and wants to go in.

My dog sits in my office with me when I WFH and when I press control+alt+delete he leaps up from his chair because he knows I’m off to the kitchen.

I am currently debating whether to do an advent calendar for Ddog this year because of how sad she gets when Christmas is over and there is No More Advent Calendar. She dutifully lines up at the appropriate spot after breakfast every morning for a week or so afterwards and looks so confused and sad when there is no treat forthcoming😪.

She also gets very excited when I put leggings on because this means W-A-L-K. My legs are sniffed as I get dressed to identify whether I am wearing them and if so there is a dance of excitement and much whining. No interest at all in jeans or dresses!

Aww, They're amazing at remembering.

I've never done a dog advent calendar (what sort of atrocious dog-mum am I?) I'm going to have to think of something now!

Mostly with my dog it's "I remember that time 4 years ago when there was a cat behind this bush so I'm going to look behind the bush every time I walk past for the rest of my life!" 😂

sixteenfurryfeet · 28/11/2023 17:27

😍

I once fell when I was taking my dog for a walk on an isolated road. I was stuck there for quite a while. He would never walk in that direction again. He sat down and refused to move

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 28/11/2023 17:34

Though so far it has only borne one fruit, the magic pork-pie bush will never be forgotten and has to be daily checked.

Peridot1 · 28/11/2023 17:38

Oh some of these are so cute.

TomWambsgansSwans · 28/11/2023 17:54

This is so lovely. There was a gorgeous thread a few years ago about horses and one poster said that her horse got scared of a new bench and had to avoid the entire bridleway forever afterwards Flowers

Pigsinspaaace · 28/11/2023 17:59

My much missed DD used to get very excited on Christmas day for her presents. Waiting patiently for me to unwrap them for her.

DD2 likes all the general excitement but doesn't engage in some way. I'm convinced our late dog did not actually know she was, in fact, a dog.

I have a “I once saw a cat here so I’d better check if it’s still there” dog, and a “they’re outside clothes, where are we going” dog.

I love thinking about what goes on in their little brains to make connections and decisions.

vernatheraven · 28/11/2023 18:11

Mine know that about half eight in the evening they have a treat. They both come up to me together and try to climb on me to lick my face and get all excited like "come on we know it's that time"

That's just wonderful 😁

When I was younger we had a dog who knew the neighbours theme tune. Only the end credit one because that was dinner time. She never got excited when the opening credits were on.

My grandpa had a fall in the woods while walking his dog and had no phone with him to call for help. He fell asleep and woke up with his dog lying on top of him, keeping him warm. Luckily, he was able to get up and get home, but we still have no idea how long he was there as Dgrandma had dementia and hadn't noticed he was missing.

At the opposite end of the happiness scale.. When we begin our walk down the road that leads eventually to.. the Vets!! 😰

suggestionsplease1 · 28/11/2023 18:32

My dog knows about 2 minutes before I do when a work Teams call is about to end and comes to sit next to me for attention. There must be a slight change in tone from me and others on the call as we're expecting things to wind up or something.

suggestionsplease1 · 28/11/2023 18:34

He also gets incredibly excited when I start cleaning as he assumes we are going to have a visitor very shortly 🙄. He is generally right 😆

caringcarer · 28/11/2023 18:38

My Aunty lived next door to a dog owner. She couldn't work out why every day around lunch time this dog starting going nuts. She was watching Neighbours on her TV. It turned out the owner took the dog for a walk when he got home from work whilst his wife watched Neighbours. The dog recognised the music theme tune.
