My dog remembered!

She had an advent calendar last year. A wooden one with dog treats in.

I was sat chatting away to her last night and I said 'it's nearly Christmas, we'll have to get your advent calendar ready!'

And as soon as she heard advent calendar she jumped up looking at me, jumped off the couch and ran to place where it was kept and looked up like it would be there!

Dogs are so smart!!

My dog has a brilliant understanding of so many words. He knows which are "daddy's boots" and fetches them, he knows "keys" which is extremely handy as I'm forever losing them and he will find them. He knows if my dp puts his work clothes on there's no chance of a walk, but if it's his joggers and a hood he will go get his lead. He knows the word "pub" which he likes, and ""shopping" which he sulks about as he stays in the car.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/11/2023 18:44

These are gorgeous!
I love the Ctrl + Alt + Del one - that's amazing!

The mixup with DD / Ddog was v funny too 😀

MaMisled · 28/11/2023 18:57

We've always excitedly said to Ddog "who is this coming?" as a friend or family member came down the path. Progressed to a sing songy, dramatic x drawn out " who.....is..... this coming?" We seriously now cannot say "who?" without her leaping up on the window sill, wagging and squeaking with excitement!

merryandbrightdelight · 28/11/2023 19:02

Ahhh I have loved reading these!!! We have a springer, and he LOVES Christmas and birthdays because he likes the paper to be rolled into a ball and thrown for him!

Christmas Eve DH and I go downstairs when DDs are asleep and put the presents out and ddog goes wild, he will then squeak and cry every single hour as though he wants to go in the garden, so we get up, go downstairs, open the door... but no, he doesn't want that, he's actually crying because he wants to go downstairs and sit amongst the presents!

AdoraBell · 28/11/2023 19:07

That is absolutely adorable 🥰

One of my late pooches sniffed the shoes I was putting on excitedly, realised they were not the ones I used walking the dogs, walked away in a huff and settled down for a snooze 🤣

MammaWeasel · 28/11/2023 19:11

Our late lamented ddog knew that the end theme tune to News at Ten meant it was bed time, and she would head upstairs. If nobody followed her she would come back down stairs half way and peer through the bannisters with an exasperated expression.

MammaWeasel · 28/11/2023 19:14

She also knew that "who?" Meant a visitor was coming and she loved having raspberries blown on her belly, so if you took a really deep theatrical breath in she would fling herself on to her back and present her belly. Dogs are so clever and funny.

AdoraBell · 28/11/2023 19:18

Also, the pooch we have now has treats, I keep them by the hob because our neighbour looks after the dog occasionally. During the heatwave I was eating chilled grapes, by the hob. Dog came over and sat for her treat because I was obviously having treats. Her she is 💗

My dog knew when it was time to go out before bed - I get up turn the light off and go to lock the door as he headed towards the back door for a wee.

Sidebeforeself · 28/11/2023 19:20

Stop this please. You are all making me want a dog so much!! If I may mention the c word.. we had a cat who always knew when Daddy (DH!)was coming home a good 5 mins before he appeared. Things is we were three floors up! But she’d sit near the front door, head cocked to one side so I knew to put the kettle on!

FictionalCharacter · 28/11/2023 19:21

Humans should really stop believing we’re the only ones with any intelligence! We always act so surprised when animals know what’s going on, even though they do this all the time.

Daffyyellow · 28/11/2023 19:30

Years ago I had a dog that would turn excited circles at the sound of the Windows log off jingle - it meant final garden visit before bed!
Another was a great present detective, I remember a teacher gift that she was convinced was food but I knew it was a mug. She wouldn’t take telling, she was right, a hot chocolate set!
My current Lab will put herself to bed after brekkie if she thinks I’m in work clothes or prepping to go out, she isn’t always right, sometimes I have to get her back out of her bed.

Though so far it has only borne one fruit, the magic pork-pie bush will never be forgotten and has to be daily checked.

😂😂

ilovepixie · 28/11/2023 19:41

My dog knows the theme tune to Emmerdale, Corrie, and various adverts with dogs in them. She will run barking furiously at the TV and won't stop until the advert or the tune is over. She only has to hear the first note and she recognises it, she hates the Johnny Depp after shave advert and is very very vocal at this one.

3smallpups · 28/11/2023 19:41

One of mine gets really excited by adverts, he sits bolt upright with ears pricked at the advert break start then watches in case there are any adverts he likes. He likes anything with animals, cartoons or people behaving dangerously ( running down stairs etc, he is very judgey) .

SiennaMillar · 28/11/2023 19:44

Adorable!

My dog can correctly find the slippers of five different people and bring them to their owner 😆 it’s very sweet, she does it as soon as you get home

OhIlovetosew · 28/11/2023 19:45

We have a new word for a walk every time our highly intelligent pooch works the last one out, she normally takes about three weeks, although it does get a bit confusing, we’ve gone through, a stroll, a promenade, and many others, currently calling it a Santa 😂

Tracker1234 · 28/11/2023 19:46

ADORA - that is one handsome dog. I have always had big dogs and love GS but always a bit nervous of how they are now breed

CanIPutTheTreeUpYet · 28/11/2023 19:54

This was a great thread OP, really enjoyed reading all the comments ❤️ dog people are my people!

familyissues12345 · 28/11/2023 19:56

My dog seems to recognise our names, if you say "go see Dad" she'll run to DH, "Go see DS1" she'll run to him etc!

She also follows the way you point, so if we're out on a walk and I say this way, and point, she'll walk the direction that I'm pointing Grin

She also recognises the car exhausts sounds and cries when one of our cars pulls up outside

HardcoreLadyType · 28/11/2023 19:58

That’s really cute.

My dog is as thick as two short planks.

(I love him, though, nonetheless.)

Newfluff · 28/11/2023 20:03

Mine understood presents, we are one of those much frowned upon families that take turns opening Christmas presents.

He would wait patiently and then on his turn very gently unwrap his present and then put it is his basket and then sit and wait watching the next person unwrap. God I miss him.

ReginaPerrin · 28/11/2023 20:05

Dogs are fantastic creatures, aren’t they? Ours goes absolutely bonkers if we go anywhere near the coat rack, as that means ‘they’re taking me out’. Also, the sound of a knife being pulled out of the knife block has them thundering into the kitchen as that means ‘extra dinner’.

I’ve got my dog a Christmas stocking too this year!

Blink1880 · 28/11/2023 20:07

Mine knows when a takeaway is arriving. As in - the Uber will be maybe five minutes away on the tracker and he will start getting excited.

Shesgettingmarriedinthemornin · 28/11/2023 20:11

Our old boy gets awfully miffed if we are 'late' going to bed which he knows should happen around 11pm. He will sigh, then grumble and eventually give us up as a bad job and head up himself. I always feel like a teenage stopout when we get up and he will invariably sigh at us again. He's so judgy.
