What do you wear on Christmas Day? Do you change/dress up for dinner? Or is it Christmas pyjamas all day?

I'm just being nosy really, I love hearing about how other families do Christmas. We wear Christmas pyjamas to open presents and have breakfast, but then will generally drift upstairs and get dressed. I will probably wear a new sparkly top and some Christmas jewellery I've made for myself and ds1 will wear his Christmas jumper, but everyone else just normal clothes. DH has relatives who properly "dress for dinner" on Christmas Day. I can't decide how I'd feel about that!

Walking gear for our walk in the morning then back to shower and comfies on.
No hint of a sparkle or dressing up.

Parker231 · 22/11/2023 19:57

Some years it’s pj’s all day. Usually jeans and a hoodie.

Wolvesart · 22/11/2023 19:58

We are usually cooking, so I start off in an old t shirt and denim skirt. I usually end up changing after family have arrived. In theory a sparkly top/jumper, skirt, tights but sometimes just a better top and comfy but not scruffy trousers.

Shinyandnew1 · 22/11/2023 19:59

Normal clothes for cooking but I change into a sparkly top for dinner :)

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/11/2023 20:01

We all wear slightly smarter clothes than a normal day, but absolutely not dressing up! I couldn't stay in my PJs all day unless I'm really unwell. Same applies to dh and dc.

I sometimes buy new clothes in November/December for social events but nothing fancy.

doitwithlove · 22/11/2023 20:05

If we are entertaining at home, I will dress up after cooking.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/11/2023 20:06

Pyjamas. My mum forces everyone to dress up so we went the other way!

SiennaMillar · 22/11/2023 20:10

A nice Chrismassy outfit, but not a dress and heels.

5thCommandment · 22/11/2023 20:13

It's Xmas day, we make an effort. Shirts, dresses.
Stockings at 6am, Xmas breakfast, get dressed, tree gifts, then around 11am head off to grandparents - procecco, presents, huge lunch at 3pm ish, blockbuster film with nibbles, kids to bed, monopoly or similar in the evening with port etc... love it. Gramps getting old so they're precious days now, maybe 10 left tops.

tinypottle · 22/11/2023 20:17

For many years we went to my sister's for Christmas dinner. My brother in law was the cook. He'd start the prep in his pj's then get so busy he'd still be in them coming earring time. One year he managed to get changed. I asked him to change back into his pj's otherwise dinner didn't feel right! He did too

ManchesterLu · 22/11/2023 20:18

Jeans and a Christmas jumper. I just can't stay in PJs all day - any day. It makes me feel like I'm off school ill, and I just can't do it.

Hippyhippybake · 22/11/2023 20:18

Always dress up, usually velvet dress or similar.

LolaSmiles · 22/11/2023 20:20

We wear pyjamas for opening stockings and then get dressed for the day in a nicer than basic type of outfit.

We don't get dressed up smart or in cocktail clothing. No sparkly party dresses here.

Pjs all morning then dress up for the afternoon and dinner at parents house.

Bubble bath in the evening and new pjs/loungewear for the evening.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 22/11/2023 20:21

Never dress up. Never been a sequin girl (it appears to be a uniform as it's almost all you can buy this time of year) so more likely to be leggings and a sweatshirt.

Needmorelego · 22/11/2023 20:22

Pyjamas all day - although I will sometimes swap the top for a t-shirt as mother in law's place is like a sauna.

Holidayhell22 · 22/11/2023 20:23

I dress up. Usually a dress with tights and jewellery plus make up.

Isthisreasonable · 22/11/2023 20:23

Not pjs but don't dress up either.

theduchessofspork · 22/11/2023 20:29

Normal in the morning, then get a bit - not mega but a bit - dressed up for the afternoon - for dinner and present opening etc.

I have no opinions on how dressed up or not people should be, but I find staying in PJs all day on a celebratory day completely bizarre. I hardly ever have opinions on what other people do, but this baffles me.

haggisaggis · 22/11/2023 20:30

There’s just the 4 of us now and I do the cooking. Usually get up and dress in comfy clothes to walk dog before getting everyone else up. Have breakfast and open presents ( we used to open it all before breakfast but I persuaded dh and adult dc a few years ago to wait until after breakfast to open them to stretch things out a bit. I promised if they did this I would prep breakfast and let them lie in until 9 ish!). After present opening if I have received something nice will put it on for Christmas diner. Rest of the family is the same. When my parents were alive and here for Christmas dinner we would get dressed up to a certain extent.

backbritishfarming · 22/11/2023 20:32

Work clothes (Scruffs) while we feed round in the morning. We change into something nice (proper dressed up) for guests coming and dinner and then back into work clothes for another hour for feeding again at 4pm ish then back in and into new Christmas comfies while we veg in front of the tv.

Hibernatalie · 22/11/2023 20:32

Normally very casual, but going to parents for lunch this year and thinking maybe a nice velvet jumpsuit

sprigatito · 22/11/2023 20:36

I love the idea of fresh Christmas pyjamas to change into for the evening! I may do that this year.

Always make a bit of an effort. Do the pyjamas people get a shower and then put pyjamas on?

We don’t wear Christmas PJ’s - just a clean normal pair. We have three generations staying for the week (17 people from age 21 to nearly 80) and have a buffet on Christmas Day and all spend the day lounging around doing very little. It’s a lovely day - my favourite way to spend the day.
