What do you wear on Christmas Day? Do you change/dress up for dinner? Or is it Christmas pyjamas all day?

I'm just being nosy really, I love hearing about how other families do Christmas. We wear Christmas pyjamas to open presents and have breakfast, but then will generally drift upstairs and get dressed. I will probably wear a new sparkly top and some Christmas jewellery I've made for myself and ds1 will wear his Christmas jumper, but everyone else just normal clothes. DH has relatives who properly "dress for dinner" on Christmas Day. I can't decide how I'd feel about that!

Christmas jumpers here. But we don't dress up as we do dog walk in the morning.

Often in PJs by about 7pm though.

Mustbethemulledwine · 23/11/2023 08:57

Pyjamas for breakfast and santa gifts.
We usually get changed into christmas jumpers, dresses, etc. a little while after breakfast is over, ready for lunch.

bombastix · 23/11/2023 09:51

Pyjamas at breakfast. The dress formally for dinner, which is quite old fashioned but then so is the dinner! So that would be a dress, heels and earrings. The men wear shirts and lounge suits (I mean that's old fashioned but they look good in them).

bombastix · 23/11/2023 09:55

Btw the pyjamas and robes are usually a cut above what we might usually wear at our own home. You are expected to have a good robe and button down jams. No one turns up in the Mickey Mouse pyjamas. Breakfast is an occasion like dinner!

PJs all week

Baldieheid · 23/11/2023 10:08

Normal clothes if we're home alone, although DH is very proud of his flashing light Christmas jumper so that comes out to play.

If we go to SILs it's different. All bets are off. DH and his brother compete to wear the silliest outfit. Last year it was Christmas suits off amazon, which turned out to be just pjs in festive fabrics. Strangest thing is they both bought, separately, the exact same one. We have had a large pink fairy, several santa versions and Tommy Coopers velvet suit, complete with fez.

It entertains the locals.....

We’re similar with the pj competition! Year long build up as to what everyone we wear on Christmas Day. I think my DMIL has Barbie ones this year - she’s been giving hints!

Lexiconofloveliness · 23/11/2023 11:50

@topnoddy I hope you don't cook Christmas dinner in the nude - surely that's a bit dangerous from a H&S point of view! 😁

dailygrind22 · 23/11/2023 18:30

Theres 15 of us ranging from 65 down to 5 months this year and we’re all in matching pj's, hair and make up done lovely though lol!
I work hard and a day of not going anywhere, tons of presents and food in comfy pjs.... perfect

vernatheraven · 23/11/2023 19:06

Depends really. At home or my mums or sisters we'd get sequin jamas but have full make up and blown hair.

This year she has additional guest so I will just be in something comfortable but with full make up and blown hair

Edinvillian · 23/11/2023 19:09

Christmas pjs in the morning, then into jeans and a t shirt while I'm cooking. Once our guests arrive I put on a dress or trousers and sparkly top.

You sound very organised! We’ve never gone down the matching route - complicated to coordinate when we live in four different countries. I’ve gone for a cat theme this year!

Really enjoying this thread. It’s lovely reading what people do.

The first year I spent Christmas with the in laws dh neglected to mention that their family tradition was to have breakfast in their pjs. Fil is quite old fashioned and very formal so this was the one day of the year pjs were ever seen in their house outside a bedroom. Back then, pre-dc, we both slept naked. Come the morning, he hopped out of bed and put on a pair he’d packed, and was astonished I hadn’t thought to bring any.

If you're dressing up are you putting heels on too? Can never see the point of going to the effort of dressing up and pairing it with slippers.

happygertie · 23/11/2023 21:16

I would love to shower and put box fresh new pj's on and lounge about all day, but we have family coming so would feel a bit weird so will wearing something smart but comfy and as soon as they leave change into pj's

Bookist · 23/11/2023 22:09

As a family, we all love dressing up so we really make an effort for Christmas lunch. But by early evening we like to be comfy so I will be in my (silk) pyjamas and (cashmere) socks x

AdoringDavidAttenborough · 24/11/2023 00:45

@Isthisreasonable Well, no. Of course not. What kind of lunatic wears shoes in their house?

Why on earth would you wear ‘heels’ at home?

jlpth · 24/11/2023 01:07

I just wear my normal clothes - leggings or black trousers and tshirt.

dailygrind22 · 24/11/2023 07:57

@Parker231 we all had a sat night together and ordered them in one go but can imagine if you we’re in different places! Loveeee the pjsGrin

Hippyhippybake · 24/11/2023 08:00

@Isthisreasonable yes I’m wearing heels on Christmas Day!

MrsMitford3 · 24/11/2023 08:06

Dc are all in their 20's now but when they were little we would open presents in the morning in pjs and then everyone dress in something nice/smart. They would play etc and I would wear something sparkly. I think at the time I felt as I was making an effort cooking christmas dinner which I love but maybe making a point that they should be smart as it was a special meal. We always have a dog walk after lunch to get some fresh air.
Then one year one of the dc had swine flu and it was pjs all day for the dc which somehow lasted a few years.
We then moved to a house right across from a pub that opens at lunch time on Christmas day and all of the locals go for a drink-it is lovely-dogs and babies and DC and grandparents etc and now everyone keen to get dressed again!!

LimeOrangeLemon · 24/11/2023 08:08

We don't have Christmas pyjamas. We get up and get dressed as normal. Christmas jumpers are encouraged but not mandatory!

Isthisreasonable · 24/11/2023 08:58

@AdoringDavidAttenborough @Dillane you've not answered the question. Do you dress up to the nines and then wear slippers with the outfit? I wouldn't wear heels in the house but slippers ruin the whole dressed up look so why bother. If I was going round to another shoes off house for a party I'd chuck on a sparkly top with jeans and socks not wear a cocktail dress and slippers.

LaurieStrode · 24/11/2023 09:07

Velvety dress, tights, full makeup, hair & jewelry. It's fun to dress festively.
