What do you wear on Christmas Day? Do you change/dress up for dinner? Or is it Christmas pyjamas all day?

I'm just being nosy really, I love hearing about how other families do Christmas. We wear Christmas pyjamas to open presents and have breakfast, but then will generally drift upstairs and get dressed. I will probably wear a new sparkly top and some Christmas jewellery I've made for myself and ds1 will wear his Christmas jumper, but everyone else just normal clothes. DH has relatives who properly "dress for dinner" on Christmas Day. I can't decide how I'd feel about that!

I have never worn pyjamas all day (except once in hospital and then I had to send someone out to buy me some), why would I wear them on Christmas day?

Nobody is suggesting that you should!

It would be really nice if we could just show interest in how other people do things without being judgemental. I realise that might be a bit much to hope for.

We're being hosted this year and I won't be expected to do anything (bliss!) So I will make more of an effort. Probably a red silk top, black sequin skirt and opaque tights and bloody slippers as it's a shoes off house 🙄

yellowlane · 22/11/2023 20:51

I always get dressed and do my normal makeup/ hair.

We wear them all of Christmas Day because we want to - doesn’t need to be any other reason.

Favouritefruits · 22/11/2023 20:54

I just wear normal everyday clothes, I couldn’t wear pjs all day I’d feel odd plus we go visiting relatives so don’t think it would be appropriate 😂

Whatincreaseplse · 22/11/2023 20:56

Slob then dress dinner

I will often get dressed but what's the big deal with staying in PJ's?

That outfit sounds beautiful, especially the red silk shirt.

We do Christmas pjs for opening presents and breakfast and then we get dressed. Varies year on year. Sometimes I do new ‘nice’ lounge wear, sometimes dress and tights. DC get new clothes too.
Trying not to be judgey but I couldnt sit and eat a nice Christmas dinner in pjs I’d been in all
night.

HippyChickMama · 22/11/2023 20:59

Pyjamas to open stockings, have breakfast and then open the rest of the presents and then we all get dressed into jeans or similar with Christmas jumpers to visit PILs before returning home for dinner. Boxing Day we go to my parents and we tend to dress up a bit more then but still smart casual. I'll probably wear a velvet dress this year but with opaque tights and DMs

Edgeofthesea · 22/11/2023 21:00

I'm also team "anything but pyjamas". I'd never say it out loud to somebody if they told me they were a pyjamas house, but it's not for me. I'd feel so scruffy and actually, not very comfortable.

We don't get hugely dressed up, but I'll usually do a bit of makeup, maybe a comfy dress, or sparkly jumper. Always comfy enough for cooking, playing with kids, curling up on the sofa etc.

To those who stay in PJs all day, I have 3 main questions:

  1. Don't you feel a bit...smelly? Even if I'm freshly bathed the night before, I always like to freshen up in the morning with a quick shower. Do you wash face/brush teeth/apply deodorant ie. everything but a proper shower? Do you wear the same pyjamas you slept in? Or do you change into new ones? Do you wear pants under your pyjamas, and if so, do you put on clean ones? 🤔 Do you wear a bra underneath? For those of us with larger chests, how do you mitigate the effects of gravity...? Not sure I'd want heavy boobs swinging around freely under pyjamas all day, whether my own or someone else's! Totally confused 🤣

  2. What about Christmas photos? We take loads - everyone around the table, people playing with kids toys etc, and I don't think I'd want to look back and see myself sans makeup with hair tied up in every photo...

  3. Do you not leave the house? A dog walk is a key part of our day, but even without a dog, it's so nice to get out for fresh air and a stroll or a run around. Do you not have visitors? Or do you just greet everyone in your pyjamas?

Not trying to fuel judgment either way - I know us "dresser uppers" come across as snobs 😆 Let's all try to understand each other 😜

Newnamesameoldlurker · 22/11/2023 21:00

I wear a dress for church and Christmas dinner, then change into pjs

ThomasinaLivesHere · 22/11/2023 21:01

Normally dressy causal. Comfortable clothing to eat lots but fancier than usual clothes. I like the idea of PJs but I’m not at my home.

ShowOfHands · 22/11/2023 21:07

Once I'd begun hosting, I started dressing up. It reminds me of being little. My Mum always bought fabric from the market, usually nicer than usual, and made us new clothes for Christmas. I loved wearing them on the day. She still knits or crochets something every year. I stopped wearing new/smart clothes for a few years, but now do it again. With my apron over the top and slippers on.

I'm wearing this dress this year.

Usual morning shower - clean pj’s and underwear. Wash face, clean teeth as every day. Rarely wear makeup.

Three generations - 17 people staying with us. Lots of photos taken. We look like us in the photos - some with tidy hair - some with it in a messy bun.

We have a dog but usually have heavy snow by Christmas so the dog has a quick trip around the garden and then happiest back in front of the fire.

It’s a lovely relaxing day. Buffet, good selection of drinks and family.

Desecratedcoconut · 22/11/2023 21:12

I like the idea of PJs to open presents on the morning but mere minutes after the last present is revealed dh starts skyping his whole family in NZ, who are properly dressed and glossy looking as it's the evening and usually mid-party and then my bra-less, bedhead and make-up less yeti morning self is broadcast across the world for unfavourable comparison to many tens of people. So this year I intend to get ahead of the curve and be dressed from the get-go.

Loubelle70 · 22/11/2023 21:12

Pyjamas until dinner
Then sparkly xmas jumper and sparkly earrings and bit makeup xxx

Colinswheels · 22/11/2023 21:13

PJs in the morning for presents then shower and get a bit dressed up. Some years it's a skirt or dress, this year I'm planning on leather trousers, cashmere Christmas jumper and high heeled shoe boots.

Saz12 · 22/11/2023 21:13

I like the IDEA of pj all day, but it just feels too weird for me! So usually something casual but maybe the clothes in my wardrobe that I like the most.Ive dressed up in other years, but never feels that comfortable.

MyKindOfWonderful · 22/11/2023 21:15

Usually my comfy yoga trousers that l don't ever do yoga in, they are very soft and comfy, and one of my Xmas hoodies, got a few nice ones from Etsy.
If I'm going out or having company then l do wear a dress, tights and boots.
I tend to go out for a walk so can often end up changing two or three times on Xmas day, but l would rather that than stay in pyjamas all day.

Bertiesmum3 · 22/11/2023 21:16

Just get dressed in normal everyday clothes like any other day of the week 🤣🤣
can’t see the point in dressing smart to cook in and then to sit around all day

sawnotseen · 22/11/2023 21:22

Christmas pjs for present opening and leisurely breakfast. Change into Christmas dress about midday ready for late lunch (about 3) either at home or sisters' or mum and dads, whoever is hosting. This year I'm wearing a black velvet jumpsuit. All the family, ages 6-82 get dressed up for the lunch/dinner/ afternoon and early eve, then into comfies for sofa/games/buffet later on.

Babymamaroon · 22/11/2023 21:27

We all dress up, sparkles, heels, costume jewels the lot! Always have a pair of slippers nearby for discreetly moving on to after a glass of early morning champers or 2!
