What do you wear on Christmas Day? Do you change/dress up for dinner? Or is it Christmas pyjamas all day?

I'm just being nosy really, I love hearing about how other families do Christmas. We wear Christmas pyjamas to open presents and have breakfast, but then will generally drift upstairs and get dressed. I will probably wear a new sparkly top and some Christmas jewellery I've made for myself and ds1 will wear his Christmas jumper, but everyone else just normal clothes. DH has relatives who properly "dress for dinner" on Christmas Day. I can't decide how I'd feel about that!

We dress up as all go to mass in morning, then my Aunts for drinks with cousin's and then home for dinner for 3pm. After dinner PJs until St Stephen's night!

ltappleby · 22/11/2023 22:42

I don’t own pyjamas, never owned pyjamas, I sleep naked. The PJ all day concept seems totally alien, I’ve never come across anyone in every day life who does this - bizarre! We just wear normal informal clothes during the day, and then change for dinner.

Just the thought of grown men lounging around in pyjamas all over the house has turned me into Billy Liar’s granny. “He wants to get himself dressed of a morning”
and at least Billy Liar wore a raincoat for breakfast.

CrushingOnRubies · 22/11/2023 22:58

I have some really comfy dresses with some Christmas motifs on so probably one of those. I have another dressier Christmas dress if it feels right to wear

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 22/11/2023 23:06

Depends on what we're doing on the day. We never stay in pyjamas though. For a start DH never wears them and I can only bear to be in them for a couple of hours maximum.
If we're at home we dress up, not really fancy but nicer than normal, same as if we're at my parents.
At PIL we just wear normal clothes, maybe a Christmas jumper or t-shirt. I remember the first year I went and wore a nice dress and felt really over dressed.

Broodywuz · 22/11/2023 23:14

Christmas day is fun/Christmasy but comfortable. I have an elf t-shirt dress with leggings. We get more formally dressed up on Christmas eve for going out for a meal and boxing day for visiting family, nice dresses and shirts

NotSorryForTheReality · 22/11/2023 23:22

Comfy in the morning for presents breakfast and dog walk then Xmas jumper and jeans (with make up - to feel good about me 😂) for dinner though there’s every chance I’ve sweated off the make up while cooking by the time I sit down for dinner 😂😂😂

BertieBotts · 22/11/2023 23:25

We just wear whatever we want which is generally normal clothes. We do stay in PJs for a while.

I don't even really have formal clothing for the younger kids, it seems like a bit of a waste as they would literally wear it once and then it would be outgrown.

SIL loves buying us Christmas jumpers, so we tend to wear those.

Sockmate123 · 22/11/2023 23:32

Dress, heels, the works! Change into comfy pjs after dinner/guests are gone

flannelonthesink · 22/11/2023 23:35

Got dressed up as a kid with fancy clothes I'd get as presents. Can't be bothered as an adult tho haha it's usually leggings and a Christmas jumper/tshirt for me.

Goodornot · 22/11/2023 23:36

PJs is a bit rubbish. But then I do go out. For walks etc. I tend to wear nice clothes but not dress up

margotmargeaux · 22/11/2023 23:41

Always dress up for Christmas lunch, it's a special occasion after all.

Pyjamas before and after , but not for the main event

ElvesAreReal · 23/11/2023 00:03

I shower, do my hair, and then change into Christmas PJs while husband gets up and he does the same. We wear Christmas PJs much like people would get dressed in regular clothing - they're just a layer over underwear.

If we have to go visiting in-laws it'll be a comfy dress and boots for me, but if visiting family I'll go in my Christmas PJs as they'll be in them anyway. 🤷‍♀️

Dogcatmousecat · 23/11/2023 00:09

Shower and then Christmas T-shirt . It is never cold enough for a jumper. Just generally casual.

YuliaJollyberry · 23/11/2023 00:59

Pjs/loungewear in the morning then get dressed up into something sparkly but comfortable.

(pjs/loungewear are freshly laundered not slept in all night and I shower etc before dressing and wear comfy underwear underneath. I’ll put mascara, eyeliner and tinted lip balm on. After food prep / cooking another shower to refresh and change into outfit before starters are served)

Mid evening I may change into clean silk pj bottoms and a clean festive T-shirt or not.

AdoringDavidAttenborough · 23/11/2023 01:05

Dress up! I mean, not full-on evening wear, but definitely a nice dress and some red lipstick.

In our family the men also wear pj’s - both my and DH’s fathers, DH, two brothers in law, DS, three nephews and DD’s boyfriend.

See I find this SO odd, much odder than a just parents and kids doing it.

What’s it about - why wouldn’t you just wear comfortable clothes?

I’m genuinely not being a cow, I am just intrigued as to why you do it.

You are being a cow about it. Why we do it - because we all want it. We don’t do formal sitting around the table Christmas meals - we have a big buffet and a houseful of family having a very relaxing day. It will probably be very cold and heavy snow so nothing better than chilling out by the fire. We live in different parts of the world and look forward to seeing everyone without any formality which takes over the rest of the year.

I could say - why dress up when you are only at home or visiting family but everyone has their own style of celebrating so I don’t.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/11/2023 05:49

We all wear slightly smarter clothes than a normal day, but absolutely not dressing up! I couldn't stay in my PJs all day unless I'm really unwell.

Same here. I'd hate the idea of staying in pyjamas all day, even on a normal weekend day, never mind a special day! We don’t open presents until everyone has got dressed and had breakfast.

piscofrisco · 23/11/2023 06:03

To date sort of dressy casual, jeans and a nice top sort of thing. This year it's just dh and I and we are going out to somewhere fancy so I'm in the market for a Christmas Day glamorous look and I'm excited for it!

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/11/2023 06:05

This year I’m planning on wearing a velvet bodycon dress I bought from monsoon a few years ago. I’ve lost 2 stone so it fits me again.

Justanothermanicfunday · 23/11/2023 06:08

Depends where we're going, if we're visiting family - always a nice dress / tights and some kind of festive hat / hairband!
If we're at home, Pyjamas until around midday then some loungewear or casual clothes - I always wear something new on Christmas Day regardless! 🌲

WinchSparkle80 · 23/11/2023 06:10

Pjs in the morning to open stockings and some presents and coffee!!

Then showers and change into christmas jumpers or tshirts if we have them or just smart but comfortable clothes for the rest of the day.

We have parents in am to visit so dressed by then.

Sourisblanche · 23/11/2023 06:25

Sparkly cocktail dress here 🥂quite enjoy a bit of glamour in the kitchen while shuffling roast potatoes and stirring gravy!

Hippyhippybake · 23/11/2023 07:49

@Mummyoflittledragon well done - that sounds fab!

Me too @Sourisblanche I really enjoy the novelty of cooking a roast while wearing a sparkly dress and drinking a few too many champagne cocktails.
