What do you wear on Christmas Day? Do you change/dress up for dinner? Or is it Christmas pyjamas all day?

I'm just being nosy really, I love hearing about how other families do Christmas. We wear Christmas pyjamas to open presents and have breakfast, but then will generally drift upstairs and get dressed. I will probably wear a new sparkly top and some Christmas jewellery I've made for myself and ds1 will wear his Christmas jumper, but everyone else just normal clothes. DH has relatives who properly "dress for dinner" on Christmas Day. I can't decide how I'd feel about that!

I have a knitted dress in Minnie the Minx colours to wear for dinner.
I’m all for opening presents in pyjamas. Christmas pyjamas seem too hot for either sleeping or cooking in. I only wear them as thermal underwear when volunteering at a heritage site.
Do men wear them?

I'm Polish and for us the most important meal and presents opening falls on Christmas Eve, so this is when I make most of the effort in terms of clothes.

On actual Christmas day it's smart casual, however I do remember back in 90s when our gatherings were much bigger my mum used to wear more formal clothes than now.

Christmas jumper with walking stuff in the morning.

Then change into a nice dress.

Well , it’s only going to be DH ,DD ( grown up and back with us for Christmas) and me at home on the big day
We will have a lazy breakfast , in our dressing gowns ( no Christmas PJs here , oh no )
Get dressed into smart casual ( me nice jumper , velvet skirt , Pearl necklace and earrings , DH shirt and jeans , DD something fab because she’s like a ruddy supermodel ) and go and spend an hour with the inlaws
Then back home , open presents , and a lovely Christmas dinner at about 5 , then back into the dressing gowns , blankets and Christmas telly

In our family the men also wear pj’s - both my and DH’s fathers, DH, two brothers in law, DS, three nephews and DD’s boyfriend.

Thanks, I’m finding it hard to imagine. I was given Christmas pyjamas for the first time last year. I’ve never seen anyone else in them. I’ll have to google images of people in them.

mondaytosunday · 22/11/2023 22:01

I used to dress up more. Now it's more casual but definitely dressed! My kids might wear a Christmas jumper if they have one.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/11/2023 22:02

Slightly better than normal clothes, so leggings, ankle boots and maybe a top with a bit of sparkle, plus make up

We don’t wear Christmas pj’s - just our normal ones.

I have my special stretchy velour trousers (they don't see the light of day otherwise, they've done about 15 years service) and a Xmas t shirt. I believe the current one has an elf on it but I can't remember as it's packed away with the decs. Might have a new one this year.

@5thCommandment stockings at 6 am lol, gosh, you have a lot of energy

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/11/2023 22:09

It depends on the circumstances here. Last year we hosted and I wore a nice black and silver midi dress with opaque tights and sparkly socks, plus Birkenstock slippers. If we go to MIL’s her house is cold, so it would be jeans and a nice jumper - I have a lovely fair isle one that is a festive fave. The Covid year it was just us and it was cosy jumpers and Christmas pj bottoms.

I love a pj day personally, but even if it was just a regular Sunday I would absolutely shower, wash/dry hair, and put on clean clothing!

DelurkingAJ · 22/11/2023 22:09

Dress for chapel and drinks after organised by DH’s boss (boarding school so on site chapel). Swap heels for warm slippers at home. Then walking shoes for post lunch expedition.

BigBoysDontCry · 22/11/2023 22:11

We go to the pub for a couple of hours so jeans and a top type thing.

bellsbuss · 22/11/2023 22:12

Young kids are always up at 6 or just before so just embrace it now. Espressos are our friend!!

I dress up (dress, tights, heels) for church then keep it on till the evening, with an apron over it when I'm cooking. In the evening I often change into something casual. No one else dresses up as much (or goes to church), but they all wear a nice shirt/top and trousers.

Derb · 22/11/2023 22:21

We wear Xmas pjs to open gifts and are spending Christmas Day just us this year so we will change into comfortable clothes to cook, okay and go for a walk in. Nothing fancy as will likely spend the day between the kitchen stove and the floor building Lego.

caringcarer · 22/11/2023 22:23

I wear a dress and thick tights. DH trousers, shirt and a jacket. We are going out to my DS to lunch so can't go in PJ's.

Mindovermatter247 · 22/11/2023 22:26

I don’t dress up, but do just wear my normal clothes. We are pretty lax in our house. Last year every one apart from me and my mum were wearing Christmas pjs all day. Each to thier own. Dc don’t usually get dressed if we ain’t going anywhere anyway, no different at Christmas.

PingPowKaPowWow · 22/11/2023 22:29

@5thCommandment because of the topic of the thread, it read that you would put the stockings on at 6am...

Bubblegum20 · 22/11/2023 22:31

Comfies all the way for me and my family none of us dress up, 'Santa' always brings the kids a new tracksuit each year and me and my husband always get each other a fresh set of comfies as one of our presents 🎄

WontLetThoseRobotsDefeatMe · 22/11/2023 22:34

I'm a comfies, but Christmassy! So am planning early morning cooking, dog walk and presents in my trusty silver velour stretchy trousers with an-as-yet-unknown top (layers as we have no central heating).

I'll upgrade to a stretchy, sparkly dress and tights for the rest of the day, with big socks and slippers!

EconomyClassRockstar · 22/11/2023 22:34

Family Xmas PJs for Xmas Eve. I can't sleep in them because they're WAY too warm, whichever brand I buy. PJS back on for presents and breakfast (because no-one wants to see their mother naked) and then get dressed after breakfast. I haven't been to church much since I left home at 18 but I would describe my Xmas outfit as Church Clothes That Are Actually Nice.
