What do you wear on Christmas Day? Do you change/dress up for dinner? Or is it Christmas pyjamas all day?

I'm just being nosy really, I love hearing about how other families do Christmas. We wear Christmas pyjamas to open presents and have breakfast, but then will generally drift upstairs and get dressed. I will probably wear a new sparkly top and some Christmas jewellery I've made for myself and ds1 will wear his Christmas jumper, but everyone else just normal clothes. DH has relatives who properly "dress for dinner" on Christmas Day. I can't decide how I'd feel about that!

@Isthisreasonable yes I’m wearing heels on Christmas Day!

Glamorous! However we have a no shoes in the house rule so all shoes, (usually boots because of the snow we have) are left at the front door.

We don't dress up. I'd love to but we normally have in laws and they would never so I'd feel overdressed and silly. At my parents we do but they're far away so it's very rare! It's something I feel a bit sad about!

See I find this SO odd, much odder than a just parents and kids doing it.

What’s it about - why wouldn’t you just wear comfortable clothes?

I’m genuinely not being a cow, I am just intrigued as to why you do it.

I find that so odd too, grown men in PJ's all day? In front of everyone, eeek, that is just a bit weird...

I get dressed up but no one else does, my choice and definitely no 'heels' just wear little boots. Everyone looks properly dressed though.

You should totally go for it, go fun rather than overly glam then you won't feel out of place.

Pyjamas for the morning, then we have Christmas dinner usually with family and friends, so dress up loads for that. Something velvety and forgiving for after I have eaten my own weight in Christmas dinner, of course!

@Isthisreasonable I don't wear slippers, just tights. As well as being more hygienic, it means I can slide across the wooden floor after a few sherries.

Why is it weird people dressing as they want and having a lot of fun? We’re all family - three generations from early 20’s to almost 80.

I think I find pj all day odd FOR ME, because Id feel self conscious in them: I have a pair I bought because I was going into hospital, and I now wear them for early-morning gift opening with a dressing gown. DH is the same, though DC are pyjama addicts!
I dont think other peoples choices are weird FOR THEM, though (except nudist Christmas, Id worry about splashes when basting turkey etc.., and cant see how seeing my in laws naked would improve my day).

I wear something sparkly throughout most of December so extra sparkles on xmas day. I usually make a bit of effort, as in I'm not in my usual home attire. I'll put some makeup on, blow dry my hair, but I'll probably be wearing jeans and a Christmas tshirt. DH wears a tacky Christmas top of sorts (he has one with bells on which is actually really handy as he's so light footed, I can hear him coming!). DS will probably wear whatever he's got that day

Barbadossunset · 24/11/2023 12:02

@ShowOfHands that dress is fabulous! You’ll be the star of the show in that.

Yes, we dress up a bit. Pyjamas for stockings and early presents. Probably for breakfast too. But definitely get changed by the time it's pre-lunch drinks and nibbles. Pretty dresses maybe. Or luxurious feeling trousers. A bit of velvet or sparkle. Xmas earrings. Comfy but nice and festive. I spend Xmas with my two sisters and their families. We've always dressed up ever since we got new Xmas outfits as kids and never really stopped.

Boxing Day involves a muddy walk and is definitely very casual!

Just the thought of grown men lounging around in pyjamas all over the house has turned me into Billy Liar’s granny. “He wants to get himself dressed of a morning”
and at least Billy Liar wore a raincoat for breakfast.

Something like cord leggings and a sparkly jumper (that can go in the wash 'cos I;m a messy cook/eater Xmas Blush )

Not pyjamas to cook and eat Christmas Dinner

AutumnBride · 25/11/2023 13:44

I have no intention of leaving the house or doing any proper cooking, so I'll be in my best PJs.
