A few days before Christmas because I need to work until then and tree will get in the way sadly.....

I’m going to pick my Christmas tree from the farm on the 18/19th November .. it will stand in water until the following weekend. We’ve always done it like this and it lasts for months after, out last one only died out in July. We left it in the garden for the wildlife.

First weekend in December

Traditionally it should be from the start of advent (4 Sundays of before Christmas - that includes Christmas day this year) until the end of epiphany (12 days after).

That makes it December 3rd until January 6th this year.

I think traditionally trees went up on Christmas Eve and came down on Twelfth Night (according to my parents who were born in the 1920s).

After a google in general they went up on advent (however both calendars and tree now standard start on the 1st regardless of correct day), apparently in the Roman Catholic faith it is Xmas eve though.

Which may explain why the older Irish members of my family are very bah humbug about trees going up (they are bah humbug about most things though to be fair lol).

@housethatbuiltme That's interesting. Neither side of my family are Catholic but my mother was always very critical when I put my tree up before Christmas Eve.

I wonder how well the trees lasted. We didn't have all the "non-drop" varieties of Christmas tree years ago, but I suppose houses were much colder and rooms would only have had a fire lit when people were using them.

Ds had a school friend whose family put the tree and all other decs up on Christmas Eve after the dc had gone to bed so when they woke up Christmas had appeared over night.
It was definitely a cultural thing but can’t remember which country they originated from.

Apparently my granddad went mad at my Nana one year when he caught her coating the tree in hairspray...right next to the fire (I don't think it was lit at the time thankfully!).

November 15th

Christmas Eve, with family when they arrive to stay.

We did this ‘accidently’ a couple of years ago, just because we were disorganised…but with carols on, mulled wine & mince pies it was a really lovely coming together.

God ….putting it up in November??? Don’t you get sick of it all. December 20th or round about then.

Roselilly36 · 31/10/2023 18:56

1st of Dec, as usual.

Nope! It’s my favourite way to ‘style’ my home. Just like I don’t get bored of my sofa or curtains after a month, I couldn’t get bored of looking at my favourite things.

I have autumn decorations from September 1st to November 15th, then I do Christmas decorations from November 15th to December 31st. We have 6 Christmas trees so decorating takes a full day, I like to enjoy it for as long as possible

I'm pregnant and due 28th November so I guess it depends on what baby does! Usually a first weekend in December person but may not feel like it with a newborn 😅

Awwww 😍 I have a 28th November baby (now very much not a baby!)

About the 4th or so of December, when he was newborn, I put him in his bouncer and slowly put the Christmas tree up in front of him, all the lights and sparkles.

It's one of my favourite memories from that time that you've just reminded me of. (I'd had a long labour and section, I think I was still high off th painkillers 😂)

Enjoy your Christmas newborn 💗

The weekend of the first Sunday of advent here. I'm usually itching to put it up by then.
