My partner of 4 years really upsets me when it comes to Christmas presents.

This year he went to a local DIY shop for my Christmas gift. He bought me 30 Christmas teddies. Spent 160 and is shocked and annoyed that I’m not happy with it.

I keep telling him if he got one it would be meaningful but 30 to me paints the picture that he genuinely doesn’t know me well enough to pick what I like.

I’ve been searching and really looking for things that would make him happy.

Am I wrong for being upset? I hate arguing over materialistic things but he makes me feel so unseen and unheard. 🤦🏼‍♀️

30 of the same teddy or 30 different teddies? If it's the latter then I suppose he must have put a bit of thought into it.

Still fucking insane.

gamerchick · 19/12/2022 23:16

I need to see the teddies before I form an opinion.

And to answer your question, no my husband has always done well at choosing gifts for me.

I did dump a boyfriend of a year when he gave me a stuffed toy dog for Christmas. It wasn't jsut that as an adult I didn't want a toy and had never shown even a passing interest in dog but it was also the way he presented it to me, like a father presenting it to a child. It was so uncomfortable.

He's got something wrong with him.

This is a bit funny, even if it must be very frustrating for you. Where would you even PUT 30 teddies?? Sometimes I think some men's people's idea of romance comes from shows like Friends, where a big, over-the top gesture is always welcomed, whereas in reality it would be really annoying / impractical.

In answer to your question, yes, my bf does do odd things like this from time to time (though not as extreme). As in, inconvenient things he thinks I should be excited about because it's "a nice gesture". For example the other week, he threw me a surprise baby shower (which WAS a nice thought, except...), with lots of mum friends who I do really like, but I'm not super close to all of them. He's told me to "keep the afternoon free" and was wfh. 40 minutes before they were due to arrive he said "you might want to get dressed soon". I pushed for what was happening, and he said about the house-load of people who were due round within an hour!! I was sat there in my nightie with a cup of tea and greasy hair, dirty kitchen, loo needed a wipe round, rabbits needed cleaning, general tidy up... all the things you would do for guests. Why would it be a nice surprise??! WHY?? 😱 Why not tell me that morning or God forbid do the cleaning himself?? He was puzzled and hurt that I was stressed by the the thing. His heart is in the right place though, sounds like your BFs is too.

Good to read you think you are done.

30 teddies?

He's an idiot and I couldn't be wasting my time with one.

I think stuffed toys are for children and I honestly would question the intelligence of any man giving them to an adult woman.

Lazy and stupid.

Tell him return them and dump him.

Donate them if he doesn't.

The waste of £160 would REALLY bug me too.

shrunkenhead · 20/12/2022 05:42

Photo please. Is he a bit on the spectrum? Just wondering why he'd think this an appropriate gift or that it's normal to give xmas gifts before xmas. I'm guessing his heart was in the right place.

Where are you supposed to put all the teddies?

His side of the bed!! Every. Single. Night. Until he's able to work out from this what an utter pain 30 teddies are for everyone. Maybe he'll learn for next year!

Buy him a Ken doll for Christmas see how he likes it.

Or 30 even

He gives as he buys. His whole family do it that way. They don’t open gifts Christmas morning! 🤷🏼‍♀️

What? What?

That is more unreasonable than the 30 teddies.

30 different teddies? That's quite a range for a diy store.

knittingaddict · 20/12/2022 07:19

If this is a genuine thread, then he spent just over £5 per toy. Can you imagine? Doesn't quite compare to a quality collectable does it?

Zoom101 · 20/12/2022 07:27

Imagine the cashier’s face when they had to ring the teddies up on the till!

Cashier “How lovely of you. Is this a donation for the local hospital?”

BF “ No, they’re for my girlfriend”.

Cashier “Oh, Ok. Security!” Backs away slowly.

keepcalm11 · 20/12/2022 07:56

And why does he give as he buys ? How did he give them to you were they wrapped. F*ing wierd.

Ellmau · 20/12/2022 08:21

Note for next year: When you have someone hopeless like this you have to tell them what you want in advance.

user85747 · 20/12/2022 08:30

A DIY store stocked up to 30 different kind of teddies......?
