Bloody DH - spoiled surprises.

Firstly I know, there are bigger things, war in Ukraine, COL crisis and so on, but I'm feeling a bit hormonal and sorry for myself today, having got up to feed the cat this morning and found that DH had left the shopping he did while I was out yesterday on the side in the kitchen, with his gifts for me plainly on show.

He tried to pass one of them off as being for his Sister, until I pointed out that we do presents with them before Christmas, so if he's bluffing I'll still know when she opens her present.

It's very far from the end of the world, and I appreciate I'm lucky to be gifted lovely things when others have nothing, I just wanted a little self-indulgent moan at his carelessness really, since it's caused the only surprises I receive to be spoiled (Parents give cash and we don't really do presents with anyone else).

DH is apologetic but that doesn't make me un-see them! Sad

Heavens above!! - he has bought you presents!! You are a VERY LUCKY LADY!!!

I am hoping that when your hormonal state has subsided you will be able to laugh about this, as you surely should. Smile

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/12/2022 12:40

I know I know, 20 people will be along in a moment to tell me I'm spoilt and that their DH hasn't bought them a gift since 1976 and even then it was a tin of spam or a dustpan and brush.

Itsthewhitehat · 11/12/2022 12:42

Surely it was still a surprise?

Just this morning. Not Christmas morning?

Did he really come in and unpack all your presents into somewhere they were in full view?

Oh I get it! You know you're being silly but you still wish it hadn't happened?

Tell him he'll have to find you an extra surprise now Wink

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/12/2022 12:46

@Itsthewhitehat They were in a bag but a stiff paper one so I could just see them sitting there on the top.

Well yes, I suppose I could just have them now instead of the rigmarole and waste of him wrapping them and me unwrapping them.

Do you like them? Better to have a ruined nice surprise than things you don't want on Christmas Day.

I do. They're predictable and safe options of things I've had before and liked - which is why I didn't buy the tall tale about his Sister Wink

Do you like them .. if so you can still look forward to receiving them on Christmas Day knowing you've got something lovely to enjoy ... if you don't like them you could (tactfully) suggest your DH changes them or you've got time to practice your 'thank you very much' comments.
I find it hard to understand an adult wanting a 'surprise'.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 11/12/2022 12:52

You're being silly, at least he brought you gifts!

My DH is useless apart from the very rare occasion he's surprised me (three times in 15 years!) this year he ordered me a kindle and I know because we share the same Amazon account. Grin

BrutusMcDogface · 11/12/2022 12:53

FFS. Get over yourself, please.

Orangello · 11/12/2022 12:54

If buying Christmas presents for your wife means she's VERY LUCKY then your bar for partners is REALLY REALLY low.

ChocHotolate · 11/12/2022 12:56

I think to be expecting surprise presents is a bit unrealistic as an adult in a long term relationship. Presents yes, surprises no.
DH & I know what we want and we might even buy it for the other when we are out together or order it from our joint Amazon account

Really? Unless there's something I specifically want then I love a surprise. This year is (or was) a mix; a jumper I'd asked for, and then a surprise, which is no longer a surprise.

I'd be equally disappointed if DH stumbled across his gifts early, as I like to see his face when he opens a surprise I think he'll love - this is why they're all under my desk at work!

I am not a cool wife, I wouldn't be happy at the thoughtlessness either.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/12/2022 12:59

predictable and safe options - ouch! Your poor DH definitely was never going to succeed this Christmas, was he?!

Reluctantadult · 11/12/2022 12:59

I'm getting a scooter and a toy horse! The scooter was delivered unpackaged and I answered the door. My 5yo told me about the horse. I'm quite excited. Dh is more annoyed and mutters lots about impossible to surprise me as I also guessed my 40th birthday present.

I don't think that's a bad thing! Or that's certainly not how I meant it. He's bought things he knows I like, but are more of an indulgence than I'd buy myself regularly.

One of them is chocolates I love (and he doesn't so I don't have to share!) from an expensive artisan chocolate place.

OMG op your husband managed to go out and buy you something safe. You should be eternally grateful, do everything for him and never ever complain!

The bar is set so low for men. It is nice to have a surprise. Just because the op is an adult she can still like a surprise.

Sux2buthen · 11/12/2022 13:07

I love a surprise too, I think in real life most people do

Very very lucky?! For goodness sake.

A husband buying a present for his wife should just be normal as long as no significant financial issues.

BrewandBiscuit · 11/12/2022 13:08

Why did you look? Once you saw the bag, you should have not looked? It seems a but odd you could see them all through a paper bag

littlebirdieblu · 11/12/2022 13:11

You shouldn't have looked

Oh come on. Can we stop setting the bar for the men to be literally on the floor.

"At least he bought you gifts" - that's really the bare minimum isn't it? Why do we always excuse everything men do by saying at least they did the bare minimum.

This is not aimed at you specifically as this has come up in other comments too but wanted to address this.

BasiliskStare · 11/12/2022 13:12

Honestly, he has made a mistake by not hiding them in time but he bought things you would like

The last time my husband bought me a surprise ( luckily he had kept the receipt ) it went straight back to the shop for a credit note. We just now ask what the other one wants and then the surprises are v cheap and cheerful. Neither of us want to spend money on the off chance.

I can understand your disappointment , I can , but a surprise where you have to fix a grinning rictus on your face and say Oh it's lovely - is not the right sort of surprise.

I would give him a break on this one to be honest
